yeah, Names for femsheps are incredibly hard, and I think it's harder for guys who play femshep because I couldn't very well name a femshep Adam. lol For me I just named my cannon after my favorite female character at the time (Kallen Kousuki-Statfeld from Code Geass) and went from there. I'd never change her name and only recently mustered up the courage to change her face.
I love naming my characters. I try to give the names some meaning, example: My "canon" Madeline was "named" after her grandmother..who had past away shortly before she was born and never had a granddaughter....It is also a refference to Madeline Kahn. Her middle name, Ione, was from her "Great-Grandmother". "Ione" is also a refference to my own real life great aunt who deid of diptheria at the age of 15....80+ years ago.

I gave my first FemShep my nickname. I started her playthrough a year an a half before I became obsessed with ME. But now I want to change hers too.
I gave my second FemShep a Ukrainian name because I started her playthrough after coming back from the country. I ended up becoming too attached to her, I think, and agonizing over her features. Then I realized that Zaeed had a loyalty mission on a planet called Zorya. Blah!
My third FemShep was based off of a Shep I wrote about, but she didn't have a name. I decided to name her after Sabina in The Unbearable Lightness of Being, after some thought. (Which reminds me, I should re-read that book, it's been a couple years.)
I've tried making other FemSheps too, with Chinese and German origins, but the names are hard for me to decide on, for whatever reason.
My ManSheps were much easier to name. Venezio--just looked up Italian names on the internet. Don't even know if it's a "true" Italian name, but I liked the sound of it. Alistair came about because I was making an Alistair look-alike. And Toni was named after Toni Kakko from Sonata Arctica, whom I modelled him off of. They're fine and dandy.

the original Dia. I liked her face shape. Sort of. But I wasn't into the hair. Or the makeup, to be honest, but I didn't feel like changing that, too.

So she turned into this. New haircut! This is actually my favorite cut, but ssh, don't tell nu!Dia I said that. She didn't look the part, though. Still. I was going to keep playing with her, but it didn't feel right.
Then I messed up, and Dia was born:

I couldn't be happier with how she ended up. She fits Dia's personality and pre-service/service history perfectly, in my opinion. And, yes, she's... romancing Jacob. But that's only in-game, I swear! In her story (was that subtle? I was going for subtle), she's with Admiral Hackett. Or she will be. Eventually. A match made in Citadel-controlled space.

what isn't seen is the hours of "hmmm...what do you think?" that my poor hubby endured. he was like, "uh...you're going to do what you want with her anyway, aren't you? so why ask me?"
lol. poor guy.
i tend to get very picky about how my avatars look:
but i think i'm digging this armor - even if it doesn't have lights on it. biotics make their own lights.

I do the same thing. I think my family is getting rather annoyed with me asking them all the time.

Shai's story is so heartbreaking, and yet heartwarming at the same time. I'm so glad she found Liara so she can learn to live again
For my Shepard (Spacer/Sole Survivor) I just liked the idea of her being very career-minded and almost a goody two shoes and then being thrown into such an extreme situation that she comes out damaged, with more renegade tendencies. That was her basis. Everything else has been elaborated on from these circumstances.LesEnfantsTerribles wrote...
Question. When developing the personality of a new FemShep, do you base her character around a specific personality trait, and then develop and elaborate it around that focal point? Or, do you create a general character with no noteworthy elements to her character, and then deepen and enrich her from there? I'm curious.

heh. glad you approve.
and you know that what i said about biotics is true.
omg. if only biotic shep+biotic LI lit up like samara does before she rejects shep's kiss

that would never happen, i know, given how hard it would be to code for it. but it would completely make my day if it ever did.

no, it's pre-ilos. and yes, i would love to see biotic shep light up, engineer shep threaten with an omnitool a la tali on feros.
sheesh, just not to have non-soldier shep use a pistol and not an AR would be nice

I like this line of reasoning a lot. I'd say I RP my Shep in a similar way (Earthborn/Sole Survivor.) She was very focused on her career and being the "good soldier" stemming from an attempt to escape the memories of her former life on Earth. After everything that's happened to her she has become much more renegade, reverting back to her previous tendencies out of frustration and a feeling of hopelessness.
I choose a back story first which helps me decide what kind of decisions a character will make based on their motivations. Based on game events elements of personality are enriched or change completely.
If ME2 didn't play out how it did, if she wasn't forced to work with Cerberus, if she didn't lose her crew, I think my femshep would have stayed on the Paragon path. But based on the backstory I gave her it made sense to completely fall to the renegade side.

If I had a nickel for every time I heard "You're starting over again?" I'd...have a lot of nickels.
The hardest thing for me to decide on is hair. I have an insane preoccupation with my characters looks matching up with their class and personality (which is why I wish they had kept some kind of light armor options.) Although sometimes a feature will just start to bother me one day. I think I have OCD. At least with ME2 we can used the Gibbed editor to change things.

This would be a nice detail (like how Liara lights up on Noveria.)
They could use a pistol for everyone's animations since it's the one weapon everyone can use. I guess it doesn't look as cool. I'm left wondering where the heck my infiltrator was keeping her assault rifle

as much as ME2 is sad to me, i also find it fascinating from an RP point of view - given how little opportunity there is to actually express it. i feel like kyrie has been in more renegade places before, but has always found her way back to a paragon-like idealism. i see me2 as this time when she's fighting not to lose her faith in the universe and in herself and she has to do that fight alone. it's actually the fight that's harder than the one against the collectors and so, more interesting to me.

Yeah, it's kinda pixelated. Don't know why, but my ME1 graphics can be a bit crappy at times.
I'll repost another picture once I've started ME2. That should be better.

@ ELE - i share that insane preoccupation. and i like your reasoning for teagan's personality.

I love this reasoning and I think it's very powerful emotionally. If I had to pick a main theme for ME2 (besides guns and 'splosions ! ) it would be Shepard's struggle with herself when faced with basically everything going against her. She died. Everyone abandoned her. And whereas Kyrie has an inner strength that drives her to hold on to her idealism, Teagan just doesn't have the past foundation to do this. She is fairly damaged (earthborn/sole survivor) and very cynical. It's fascinating.
I think this is where they were going with the story. Part 1 is the start of the hero's journey and all we see is the nice parts of the Universe. Everything is black and white. Part 2 the hero is "put up in the tree." It's the darker act and things seem hopeless. Which is why I have hope for ME3 since following this arc the hero "find her way down from the tree" and saves the day and it ends happily ever after.
This is why I think Kaidan and Ash fans will see a big payoff either in DLC or the third game. It's their Return of the Jedi, which means party in teddy bear forest, and rainbows or whatever. I would be extremely surprised if there wasn't a happy ending for all the characters based on what they've been saying about the general story arc.

Me too. Not only is it brighter, it's much more dynamic. Everywhere you go there is a different mood. ME1 in comparison seems very flat.
