I actually think that the games do a good job making LIs who are good matches for femshep. I mean, really, who could keep up with her? I think Garrus, Liara, and Thane can. Liara is sweet, and I think she and Femshep have a special something. Garrus and Thane, too.

I think so as well.

Cameron loves Liara for her personality, her introverted nature and when she stumbles over her words, like when they first met after Therum. It's not that she's into boobage or 'assest' or even the fact that Liara's an alien woman.

Haha, I say all this now, but I'm quite lost when it comes to conveying romantic scenes, even if they're little ones, in writing. Writing little bits of Femshep/Liara, as well as some other scenes between the ME2 squadmates (I'm quite sure who'd pal around with whom, or even develop attractions to whom. We'll see, I suppose.) is going to be hard for me. The only ones I could see are Tali and Garrus, and maybe Jack and Grunt bonding through the whole 'we're badasses and we're itching for a good fight' thing.

On the topic of squadmates, do your Sheps pick and choose 'mates based on gameplay or RP elements? (Ie Tali and Leigon, Jack and Miranda, Mordin and Grunt, Garrus and Miranda etc)

I tend to RP the team I'm given, so that leads to me choosing most of what I listed and pretending that while Cam's back is turned, the squaddies are bickering behind her or arguing on the ship when Shep's out with another squad on some side mission. When I'm through with a mission, often times I switch out one or both members, because in my head either "they need their rest" or "They've not been out in a while."

EDIT: First page?! Woooo! Posted Image

A little bit of both for me.  I usually choose the most useful ones in terms of what's expected in a mission, and how amusing their comments are (the latter moreso applies to ME2).
Thane's comment regarding the end of the "biotic God" volus scene in Samara's recruitment mission is priceless, for example:

no way. i am so bringing him next time.

and i tend to bring who is useful, but i mentally RP why: miri and garrus. garrus would never leave shepard's side and miri would also not allow herself to be left behind. sometimes tali joins the crew when the geth are involved.

edit: oh, and pretty much taking kaidan and liara as your squad = awesome. some of the BEST banter evar, kaidan at his funniest, and lots of things flying around and glowings of blue. it is the best squad ever.

Truer words were never spoken.

Heh, you should have gotten a review already, one in which I once again marvel at you characterizations. May I say the chapter in which Kyrie discovers Garrus' crush/infatuation (would that be the correct terminology for what he feels for FemShep?) to be....heartwrenching, sad, wonderful, and terrible all at one?  Terrible because Kyrie can't reciprocate those feelings. (sp?) I mean, that chapter, above all, made my heart hurt.  You did a wonderful job. Kudos to you and your wonderful writing.

Also, this.  I just read that chapter today and that's my feelings to.  Poor, poor Garrus.  I just wanted to hug him.  And how hideously awkward and difficult for Kyrie.  The part where she starts half-clinically checking Garrus out and he notices it and then they just stand there staring at each other was both hilarious and painful at once.

 New FemShep incoming!

This is Moira Shepard.  It took me a while to get her design the way I wanted, but I'm happy with the result.  I also changed her name a few times.  She's a bit more exotic than what I usually do, but I wanted her look to match her personality.

She's an Engineer.  Earthborn and Ruthless.  I'd say the best way to describe her would be a Renegon.  I'm still fleshing her out in my head, but I've got a pretty good idea of what she's like.

As an Earthborn, I imagine her running with a gang for a short time.  Her extreme intelligence and talent for combat would have gotten her recruited by higher ups in organized crime, however.  She was beginning to undergo training as an assassin and thief, but decided this wasn't the life she wanted and enlisted in the Alliance to get out.

She's cold and calculating when it comes to combat or dealing with people she doesn't trust.  When it comes to her crew and squadmates, however, she considers them her people.  They're important to her and their well being is on her agenda.  She also has a dry sense of humor that can sometimes be misinterpreted as hostility.

That's what I've thought up so far.  She's going to be an interesting character to play out.  Going to start an ME1 run tomorrow.

She's awesome!   Another Engineer!!!  Yay!

She has a similar background to my Shepard (Earthborn/Ruthless/Engineer) except mine is a Paragade, leaning more towards Paragon.

Oh wow, Thane's "sleep well, and dream of bulbous women".  Awesome nod to the movie Princess Bride.

Never saw that until now.

EDIT:
Thanks for the compliments!  I always wanted a FemShep with violet eyes.  Hmmm, Lily Allen.. no idea who that is.  Looked up pictures of her, though.  Moira does kind of look like her.

Meer also does Prazza on Horizon, Captain Kar'Danna on Tali's loyalty mission, the food shop clerk turian and the shotgun-obsessed turian on the Citadel, the volus posing as Fade on Garrus' loyalty mission, the voice of the PA system VI in the Dracon Trade Center, and bunches of other roles.  He's the most widely used voice talent in Mass Effect, and is quite skilled as an actor.  I don't know why his portrayal of Shepard falls so flat.  I guess the voice directors are always telling him to reign it in.  "Stoic!  We want stoic, man!"

Of course he also has to compete directly against Hale, who is just inimitable.

oh wow. well, to keep it as short as possible, i actually didn't even notice kaidan the first time i played ME1, but then, i missed over half of the game - i did no side quests. as soon as the aliens showed up, i ditched the humans (like so many people do - bad sage!) i thought he was the red-shirted ensign and was surprised he lasted so long. the second game i actually went and talked to him and was surprised to find a very funny and nuanced character. then i realized there was a romance written in and i was intrigued enough to follow it with that femshep. since then, all my femsheps either romance him or i stop playing them.

as i tried to indicate in my fanfic, kyrie likes him primarily because he sees her as HER. together they are able to be real and human. i think that's what i find so compelling about their story. it's really just about two people who are caught between duty and reputation, but inside that shell is a real person that gets ignored. add in that kyrie - like kaidan - is a messy past and he's the first person who isn't intimidated by her and she's a goner. it think it's sweet. and despite admitting that asari are attractive, kyrie is definitely into men, which is hard because she tends to scare the h*ll out of them.

i actually think that the games do a good job making LIs who are good matches for femshep. i mean, really, who could keep up with her? i think garrus, liara, and thane can. liara is sweet, and i think she and femshep have a special something. garrus and thane, too.

i guess i liked kaidan best because he wasn't a perfect fit and there was this tension there to me between the two of them about who is really "in charge." i dunno if i'm imposing traditional gender roles or what, but i feel like kaidan has a slightly "old fashioned chivalry" sort of vibe and i actually like that. femshep can be overwhelming, but kaidan doesn't take any crap from her - he also seems to want to protect her, even as he knows she can handle herself. while i initially hated the way he "second guessed" every dang thing shepard did (or seemed to), i later came to appreciate the honest opinion. i think this chapter pretty much summed up where i think their relationship was before the attack on the normandy. after...dunno. i'm waiting on BW for closure, since i'm holding out hope kaidan/femshep will get the same love liara/femshep did.

but i will be the first to acknowledge that kaidan is a really hard character to get to know. you pretty much have to play femshep and romance him to see the more nuanced sides of his introverted character. he's really funny in a deadpan, sarcastic way, and his relaxed confidence and complete calm under fire is almost uncanny.  basically, he's the kind of person who makes for a good long-term friend, not the flashy kind of person who draws attention to himself at the party. he's more the guy in the corner nursing the same beer all night long that shepard ends up getting a ride home with and then he manages to score her number and a coffee date as he drops her off.

*snipped a bit for length*

Awesome post and it gives a wonderful insight on Kaidan and Kyrie's character, sagequeen!

I have a question. What is it about Jennifer Hale's voice acting that you find to be superior to Meer's? I know Meer has had some really bad paragon lines and the Sheploo face bothers some people (I see nothing wrong with it), but I have heard some fairly bad Renegade lines from Hale so I would imagine it balances out.

I don't really want to play a femshep game simply because I get immersed in ME2, and I would feel so awkward hearing the lines I've heard a dozen times or more from a voice that wasn't Meer's or from a face that wasn't Sheploo's.

I like that Jennifer Hale has a certain warmth to her voice; she makes Shepard sound alive and involved in whatever dialogue chosen. Mark Meer sounds detached and not in the least bit interested in what lines he's speaking. Meer's voice volume is also very jarring compared to the other characters around him. Fans of Meer like to argue that his detached tone of voice helps the player decide on what emotion to feel at any given moment, but if that's so, you might as well have a mute character. My preference also has little to do with being female as I've come across great male voice actors that help me become attached to the story and characters. Mark Meer simply is not one of them, and that's a damn shame.

Looks like a PC screenshot, yes? I'd say "edit C.ini so that scar value applies to all morality levels". It's my favorite solution. I love the slight "not done getting resurrected yet" look of the small scars, but yes, the later ones are ridiculous. ^_^

Funny, I've never felt that way about his lines. I have felt that way about Hale's when I hear it on Youtube though, but I reasoned that it was because I was used to the particular inflection Meer gave the lines and my memory was distorting my perception of the delivery.

Honestly, my biggest complaints with some of Meer's deliveries involve more Director Error, where it seemed they recorded lines when Meer was sick with a cold or something or they just didn't rerecord.

It really does come down to personal preference. It's not like I can force you or anyone else to feel a certain way when hearing Hale's voice. So long as the disagreements don't devolve into sexist arguments--as in liking Meer's voice simply because he's a man or disliking his voice for the same reason, or even accusing femShep fans of liking Hale because they feel "persecuted"---then I can't get very upset about another person's taste.

Come on, that's not cool. I came in asking a question and I don't get any discussion from it? One reply and you're done?

Ok, so you think her voice is more expressive. Are there particular types of lines that you think she does well or do you just think she is better in every way to Meer?

Well, Hale is best at delivering Paragon lines and most of her Renegade lines sound good too.......here's an example: , go to the 3:39 mark.

I just love how Hale manages to convey a strong, mature woman with a voice that is not girlish or butch, yet still smooth if sometimes a little husky....if that makes sense to anyone.

@Guardian: I've not managed to get through a ME1 playthrough with a maleShep yet (although I do have every intention - when I get the time). I have heard many recordings with Meer's voice though. I do have a preference for Hale because, like you, it's the voice I am more accustomed to listening to. It's hard to put my finger on exactly why I prefer it. Since I tend to lean towards Paragon (usually), most of the lines Hale's says do have that warmth others have referred to. There's also this assured confidence in the way she says things that doesn't come accross (to me anyways) as cocky or arrogant.

I am a fan of Meer's snark though. He pulls off arrogant, jerky, snarky Shep very well.

And, here's another shot of my main Shep. Running into an "old friend".

I tend to like Hale better mostly because of the line deliverly, and that I can see her more as Shepard's VA than I can Meer's. Just my preference I suppose. I've played both male and female, but I prefer the female role for Commander Shep.
