edit: @ jedi - what i found annoying about the jacob romance - all the ME2 romances, honestly, was the "trigger" nature of them. it's off - then you hit a dialog option and turn it on. while ME1's ninja romances could throw people, i did appreciate that interest was shown by the LI and shep could choose to show interest back or not (Granted, interest between romance and friendship was not differentiated, but you know what i mean).
for all that i love ME much, much more than DA, i wish the relational dialog had been more like DA, with friendship options, trigger a romance, and then have it develop over time. that's me.
ME could have handled it better. I always felt the main issue with it in ME wasn't that companions showed interest it's that they did it the second time(!) Shepard came and talked to them. If I were Kaidan I'd be worried silly about being shot down if I just blurted it out there so soon. I also really dislike the "talk 3-4 times = pixel!Sex" approach that the ME team takes, and it only got worse in ME2 because of Shepard's: "Hey, I fancy you so you know we're gonna get nekkid right before the endgame!" writing.
In this respect, I think Dragon Age: Origins blew ME out of the water. Take a classical romance like Leliana - it starts slow, with friendship and mutual respect and then as her past starts to catch up to her, those feelings for the Warden end up becoming something more. The fact that she doesn't confess until her approval is quite high (assuming we don't game the system by spamming Feast Day gifts, ofc) makes the whole thing feel more natural. The cringe-worthy love-scene implementation aside, I always loved how afterwards, Leliana just looks at the Warden when you wake up and simply says: "Hello". It's small, it's unremarkable but it does wonders for the whole thing.
I also liked how they twisted the whole love-scene thing with Morrigan. It's easy to sleep with her, but not easy to get her to fall in love with you, which was a nice change.
So yeah, I don't know - should the ME team swallow their pride and admit that they need to do a slower pace? If they do that, they can kiss the Halo crowd goodbye, but if ME2 really hasn't sold that much more than ME, then it stands to reason they'd sell more ME3 copies if they finally got back in touch with the classic BioWare fanbase? *dreams in vain*
EDIT: Top of page femShep!

She is happy about where we're at [you know the thing we cannot say]
