okay, here's a question: do you usually go into an RPG intending to follow a romantic subplot, or do you find most VG LIs silly and/or distracting, or do you wait to see if you like any of the romances before deciding?
and with that, what was your take on ME in relation to the LIs available for femshep?
I don’t go into a game expecting romance at all. With the exception of NWN2, DA:O and ME were the first games I played that had a heavy romance subplot. NWN2 had romance, (barely) and it was bad, so that almost doesn’t count. (I came into KOTOR late). IN DA:O I had a character for every possible romance except for Zev. I always meant to do one for him, but never got around to it.
As for femShep’s ME1 romances they were all a bit abrupt. “Hi, I’m your new team mate. Thank you for being nice to me. You’re cute, let’s do it.”
My girl never romanced Kaiden in ME1, as she always kill him. Need to rectify that. Anyway, he’s a nice guy w/ some issues, but not enough to qualify as a brooding bad boy. He’s the perfect man for the heroic heroine, loving, caring, and will always be there. My girl hated to kill him and in my head canon, she thought it was sweet that he hit on her almost immediately. The bit w/ Liara where she tell him, “I saw her first” is priceless for his response. I can definitely see the appeal.
I could write a book on my girl and Liara, but suffice to say, she was the only “girl” available for femShep and so that’s why I chose to meld the two. For me, they work very well together, as of LotSB, they are a true couple, committed to each other, w/ the bonding ceremony just a formality.
BW should have left the option for Ash (or Kaiden) to go either way, but what’s done is done. I agree w/ some that making all the characters bi is unrealistic, but then again, Mass Effect fields are unrealistic. Still, I’m certain many would have complained.
In ME2 the romances are allowed to flourish a bit more they are certainly diverse. Unfortunately, out of three main romances (I don’t count Samara or Kelly), two, Jacob and to a lesser extent, Thane, seem forced. With Jacob, Shep has suddenly turned cougar and Jacob himself is like Carth being an a**. With Thane, she lends a sympathetic ear to the brooding bad boy. While some of the early paragon dialogue “I’ve been thinking about you too.” could be “concern” it’s amped up just enough to imply something else. It’s probably the best romance in ME2, but for some reason it just doesn’t jell w/ me.
Garrus, on the other hand, is A: a better character and B: a unique situation. Shep and Garrus essentially become friends w/ benefits. The problem I have w/ that plot is that it happens too soon in the game. Shep just blurts it out, and then they start planning it. Granted, there is some great dialogue, the funniest of all the romances, it just feels wrong. The way I see a Shep/Garrus romance is that there is some sexual tension between the two for most of the game, not much, but just enough. Maybe there’s some playful banter, but they never commit. Right before they go through the relay, Shep looks up Garrus. They start talking, not about sex, but ultimately they discover they need each other. Maybe it’s just for that moment, or maybe it’s something else, but for whatever reason it is then they decide to be together.
I think I need to go to bed. I’ve rambled more than enough on this.
