Interesting point about Joker and Chakwas being hostages for Shep's good behavior, Sable.

Yeah, I while back I said that the entire story in ME2 could've made sense if they'd just added a single line of dialogue from the Illusive Man:

"Of course you're free to leave us whenever you wish, Shepard -- just remember, you're responsible for the continued good health of your associates, as well."

Not an overt threat, a simple statement that could be taken a few different ways, but the implication would be enough.

but that would mean cerberus is evil. and they're not evil. they're the good guys, right? <_<

seriously, i'd have FAR more respect for cerberus if they just FLAT OUT were evil and yet got results. democratic, idealistic alliance beaurocracy which sometimes gets results and has low collateral damage vs. cerberus which is just about always has massive collateral damage and yet usually get results would be an INTERESTING DICHOTOMY.

^ THAT would be something worth going renegade over. it would be worth debating, worth roleplaying, and either way, shep could be a hero and have good reasons behind his or her actions. as it was, cerberus is just as "derp" as the council AND has collateral damage and shep feels like she's a tool no matter whose hands she's in.

I cannot imagine how anyone could read the Mass Effect wiki entry on Cerberus, even if they haven't played ME1, and not see that Cerberus is not only evil, but they are ridiculously, cartoonishly evil.  TIM probably has a pool filled with sharks with lasers on their heads in his lair.  I used to think that the writers were trying to retcon Cerberus's image in ME2 -- but then I read the plot of ME: Retribution, where Cerberus is again responsible for head scratchingly stupid acts of pure evil.  They might as well have a Kitten Torture division.

I would have loved some sort of acknowledgement of this in ME2 -- or, at the very least, let us talk about events like Akuze, and let our Shepard have a chance to have an opinion about this stuff.  Even though moments like Tela Vasir's speech in LotSB were great, Shepard was still as cardboard as ever, with no chance to express herself even when any normal person would want to say something.  I hope the devs address this in ME3.

you're right. i said that badly. i think what i was trying to say is that thane has a rather large shadow cast over him. some find that to be his appeal, some like him in spite of it. for me (and my extension, my sheps), it is a grief i don't want to intrude in. i like that holly goes for him - it helps me appreciate the NPCs more when people say why they like a particular romance, even if i don't choose it.

And I can understand why people love Kaidan.  I actually really like him, too.  He's sweet, kind, reserved, yet strong in his own right (he's very much like my RL husband).  Trista loves him to pieces.

I was thinking about one of the reasons Holly is drawn to Thane, and I've finally been able to formulate it into words. She's a kind and giving person that often thinks of others before herself.  She's also quite empathic, so it was easy for her to sense that Thane was a person in a lot of pain.  She reached out to help him, and discovered a beautiful soul underneath all that training and a lifetime of murder.  What I like so much about it, was that she didn't trust him at first and disapproved of his actions.  Then she was blindsided in discovering who he really was and fell in love with the person she'd least expect to.

No, it's sea bass.  Ill-tempered sea bass.

And you made me giggle about Cerberus.  Don't do that.

@Sable

I agree that Joker and Chakwas would have been a good incentive for keeping Shepard in line. I had the same thought. The Illusive Man subtlety threatening them would have been a good reason for Holly to cooperate, until she found an out.

It also bothered me that Joker never said anything about Shepard's death.  Even an "I'm sorry I got you killed, because I wouldn't leave the ship." or some kind of acknowledgement.

And they could still do it so that the threat was alignment-based. Obviously, a Shep who LIKES Cerberus wouldn't need to be threatened.

ha ha ha!

seriously. well, and to me, Jack is a kitten. oh, i do love jack. she's so vulnerably beautiful under all those attempt-to-be-tough tattoos and her VOICE is the same way. she has freckles. i love her char design. and then when cerberus is so laughably stupid, it cheapens characters like her, too. and miri. and and and....

@ aislinn - that's beautiful, what you said about thane and holly. just... :crying:

As far as romances and Shepard, I actually designed my Shepard's personality to fit in with the Liara romance. I wanted a Shepard that had a rough, troubled past that still haunts her...a guilt-ridden Shepard. Liara seems as if she would be able to aid a Shepard such as this in being able to forgive herself, eventually. Liara is looking to get close to Shepard the person, not the hero (or 'Butcher' in my Shepard's case), not the 'symbol'. The romance seems to make this quite clear and I like that.

I didn't do this the very first time I played ME1 and romance Liara. I just made up a Shepard to romance Liara and see what it was all about...I liked it, so decided to roleplay it a bit deeper by designing another Shepard tailored for it, with the things I would find most interesting.

Nothing really initially drew me to that romance, besides the fact that she was the only available f/f option. I didn't really follow ME1 prior to it's release and didn't even know what Liara looked like before playing the game and meeting her on Therum. I did know that there was a female alien squad mate that could be romanced by FemSheps and I was going to romance her even if she had five heads and breathed fire. I actually thought it was Tali after meeting her.

Needless to say, I fell in love with the Liara romance and have played through it so many times I've lost count.

Well said, J.  I lol'd hard, five heads and breathing fire would have been an interesting romance. :P  Yes, I think you unofficially hold the record for the most times romancing Miss T'Soni and they're all by FemSheps.

ohmygod, she's so adorable. SO ADORABLE. Every time I see Kyrie, I just wanna squish her.

Since I'm obnoxious and played for HOURS last night... you get spammed with more of Dia's face, since I'm still waking up and understandable thought is difficult for me at this stage.

Okay everybody!  Yet again we almost veered into off-topic land discussing Cerberus and how they got screwed up by the writing and how they would've been much stronger as an evil-but-competent organization and so on.  Last time that happened, someone suggested that we make an entirely new thread to discuss that sort of thing, and I almost buckled and made one.  This time, I actually did.  I really enjoy discussing this stuff when it comes up, and really value the insights you all have, so head on over there if you like, and maybe we can get BioWare to notice and fix some things in ME3.

Squish her in a hug, of course! Though her barriers would probably keep me from doing so. Sigh.

Hackett, yes! Once I finish NaNoWriMo, I'm going to start working on their story again. She surprised me with how much she adores that admiral. ^_^

I totally take "handsome" as a compliment, as I consider it one myself! You mentioned earlier that she actually looks like she's in her 30s, and that's one of the things I like most about her. Most of my Shepards look so young, but Dia actually looks grounded. Like she's been around the block a few times (and she has).

I recently committed Eileen Shepard to her first and only romance in Mass Effect. Kaidan seemed like the most believable choice for her, so I did everything to ensure that she wound up in his arms. While I think their flirtations added a fun twist to the overall experience, I'm not feeling properly motivated to replay all of ME2 just to carry their undying (?) love (?) over to ME3. At least not right now.

Kaidan's absolutely confuzzling "as long as nothing changes" addendum at the very last minute briefly inspired me to consider kicking him out and pretending that I blew him up on Virmire. "Why are you here right now?" was my initial reaction. To say the least, he put the "lucky" in "damn lucky" that night.

Is it just me? Does Kaidan's entire romance subplot basically devolve into a one night stand with an insecure guy?

Image IPB

Any-who. Unless their relationship has a chance to mature into something a little more engaging, I'll be perfectly content to tackle ME3 with my canon (and happily single) Shepard.
