They probably want to use these stats to justify that.

That's what I fear, too.

That's what Noah thinks of your statistics, BioWare.

Earlier on today and for the first time ever, I selected the first of the Intimidate dialogue options during the exchange with Cole on Eden Prime. Jennifer Hale's voice acting for that line is impressive, as she sounds so persuasive, and threatening at the same time. Incredible.

Well, those stats should tell BioWare something else. Namely that their promotions regarding FemShep is nearly non-existent. I almost passed ME1 and ME2 up because I didn't realize you could play as a female character.

Same. If my friend didn't tell me that it is possible to play as female, like in KotOR, I guess I wouldn't play the game...

i keep wondering if the fact that you start the game and choose "male" "female" might confuse some of the dimmer bulbs. "i'm a dude, so i select male"- as in, setting own gender, not realizing you're choosing that of the character?
maybe i'm being unfair, but that was what i thought the first time i saw the ME "new game" thing

I know that the statistic stating that 80 percent of players play as MaleShep came out a while ago, but apparently Bioware has released more information on ME2 stats, and claim that only eighteen percent of players choose FemShep: http://www.destructo...ng-188362.phtml

Sigh. I really still have a hard time believing that over eighty percent of players never create even ONE female character while playing ME2, but what do I know. It's really disheartening, and makes me think that asking for more recognition and marketing for Jennifer Hale/FemShep is in vain. BUT...I guess we're part of an elite minority, right?

Indeed...that's always awesome.

I don't believe those stats are that valid.  Unless I underestimate the ratio of casual ME fans (the ones that play Sheploo/DudeShep Soldier once and then quit) to those more hardcore fans that play the game multiple times, and perhaps grow to prefer FemShep.  If that's the case, then we can feel proud to be in the elite minority :D

I consider myself a hardcore ME fan. I have played all classes in both ME1 and ME2. Most of them multiple times.
But, I do play maleShep, default face most of the time. Not because I am lazy. I just like it. I also do have several custom made femSheps. In total, about 20 maleSheps (8 Vanguards, 4 Soldiers, 3 Sentinels, 2 Infiltrators, 2 Adepts and Engineer) and 2 femSheps (Adept, Engineer) in ME2. Am I "casual" fan just because of that? Honestly, I do not see what's so ridiculous about those statistics. On average, 2 out of 10 Shepards is a femShep, that is pretty good considering target demographic.

Why wouldn't I play femShep? Not too many video games where you can play a kickass female hero as the main character where the fact that she is a woman isn't a big damn deal and she's not used as a sexy object for dudes to ogle at while they play. It's really heartening to see her be strong and confident and just as hardcore as her male counterpart (even more, in my opinion!).

So that's two excellent shots you can get there.  Too bad I can't get that barret.

Actually....neither can I.      I'm an Xbox player, plus it doesn't work with long hair.

I play 50/50 Male and Female Shepards to be honest.

Think that both have their strengths and weaknesses, sometimes I prefer Meer, sometimes I like Hale better.

Well, not only casual fans do that to be honest. I can totally see the appeal of femShep, hell I enjoyed those playthroughs a lot. That said, I am not really surprised most ME fans play maleShep. And since most people like shooters, Soldier class being the most favourite is not that surprising either. I just thought this "maleSheploo Soldier sucks and femShep is da best" reaction all around is kinda ridiculous.

This!

A few months back, I actually discussed this subject with a very close friend of mine. We both agreed that DudeShep is generally used as an avatar and self-insert by players, whereas FemShep is her own individual character and players will construct unique, complex and developed personalities centred around her. Observe the amount of DudeSheps that are not only named after their creators, but are also roleplayed as being a mere extension of the player's personality, and it strengthens my belief that DudeShep is little more than an avatar to the vast majority of players.

I actually think it's an interesting trend.

My first inclination is to make characters that have at least a passing resemblence to myself. Like you said, it's a roleplaying preference, and I find it helps with immersion.

I'm pretty sure making yourself is totally impossible with Mass Effect since the feature shapes are static and have limited range. Unless you happen to already look like any of those features, unlikely. I've never tried, I'm mixed race and none of the eye or nose settings even come close.

Most regular looking people do not transfer well to what is possible in games anyhow. They lack nuance and quirky features are easy to lose in translation. Look at Miranda: she is gorgeous in real life, doesn't completely transfer over. She still looks pretty most of the time, but there is still some serious uncanny valley happening

Interesting question. Right now at this moment? No, I love my face as it is, flaws and all. It the only face I's ever known :D
If I could somehow magically go back in time to before I was born and play god?  Maybe.  Because technically "I" don't exist yet.  Too many variables to think about, need more coffee.  But I doubt many people would say no to being more attractive, and my favorite femsheps are how I see the ideal woman (which is for the record, Monica Bellucci.  Pls refer to my Dragon Age avatar for my favorite character I've ever made, ever.)

RE: Indra; that's Indra right?  Damn, she looks tough.  And I mean that as a compliment.

It's interesting to see the different approach others take when playing an RPG. When I watched my mother design her ME character her first instinct was to design someone that resembled her. The same with my father. I remember finding that to be odd and I suspect that having some sort of artistic background affects my perspective on this. I see my face everyday in the mirror; I've drawn it plenty of times in the past......what's there to gain in recreating my look in a virtual format? I know that the world I'm playing in is not real so trying to tie in a real world analogue simply doesn't work for me. I would also jump at the chance of recreating how I think I should look. It's a great feeling to not be shackled by what you were lucky (or unluckyPosted Image) enough to be given at birth; it really is a freedom of expression.

Of course not, and I never said that 'hardcore' fans don't play Sheploo or Soldier.

My only point is that there are a lot more casual gamers and they tend to prefer the Soldier Sheploo default.  This is why the stats look this way...this says nothing about hardcore gamers, though judging from this site, a lot of them appreciate FemShep and play her at least once.

Also, given that this is the FemShep thread, I'm not sure why you find these reactions ridiculous.

It's not about suckage. For me, sheploo soldier is the zillionth in his kind. I'm already bored.

Because you guys say that these statistics must be skewed and that Sheploo Soldier is inferior/sucks/femShep is elite just to make yourselves feel better about femShep. Question is, why? femShep is awesome and no statistic can change that. No need to trash Sheploo, Soldier class or casual gamers. Just my $0.02 though.

The question is: Why do you play FemShep?

Is it her Voice actress Jennifer Hale or have you just fell in love with your FemShep from the start. Did the fact that you could play female protagonist affect your decision to buy Mass Effect in the first place.

Please tell us why do you love FemShep.

I picked up Mass Effect when I got a 360 last year. I didn't really know anything about the game other than it was a Sci-Fi, RPG shooter. Upon booting the game for the first time, I picked default male Soilder Sheaprd, and off I went. I enjoyed the game, loved the story, setting and characters. But Shapard was a bit dull and wooden. So I decided to do a second playthrough using a female Adept. The second time through the game was even better. Jennifer Hale's voice work made Shepard a more interesting and believable character and after a couple more playthroughs and getting the character to level 60, I couldn't imagine Shapard as anything other than a female.

I think the fact I bothered to make a custom face for the character helped as well, even if that original Shapard is long gone, having been replaced by the face to the left of this post. The fact is that's "my Shepard", she's unique to me, and that makes me even more attached to her.

I can safely say that if it wasn't for FemShep I wouldn't be posting on or even reading these forums, hell I may not even have bothered with Mass Effect 2 at all, and simply forgotten about the series. But because of her Mass Effect is one of favourite game series of all time and Shepard one of my favourite characters.

The stats do seem skewed given FemShep's popularity on the BSN. People have offered explanations for it (myself included). Who said Sheploo Soldier 'sucks'? I just said casual gamers tend to play this combo more. That's it.

This thread heavily supports FemShep so of course people are going to be pissed at those stats and want to rant about them. My deal is, I doubt anyone wants to actually be told in here that their views on the stats are ridiculous. That's like going into the Tali thread and saying that people are ridiculous for being attracted to her. That's not going to go over well.
