Casual fans tend to play Sheploo Soldiers...that's what I said.

Well, not only casual fans do that to be honest. I can totally see the appeal of femShep, hell I enjoyed those playthroughs a lot. That said, I am not really surprised most ME fans play maleShep. And since most people like shooters, Soldier class being the most favourite is not that surprising either. I just thought this "maleSheploo Soldier sucks and femShep is da best" reaction all around is kinda ridiculous.

It's about player preference. Theres more to a game than just make character, choose class, shoot stuff, kill bad guy. The game feels completely different when you change genders and your protaganist is fully voiced. The folks in this thread prefer the femShep side of the game for many reasons, none of them should be considered ridiculous, and it seems rather trollish that someone would come into this thread and say something like that.

My problem with the stats is lack of context. If it only does first pt, then I can understand. My first pt in ME2 was a maleshep, but I play femsheps more, that's the problem. Is this our first pt or all our pts. Bioware is not giving us any details and that's why I consider these stats a waste of time. I don't care if people prefer Sheploo or hate Femshep, but when you do stats like this, you need to give proper context.

Pretty much this. Good post, kraidy.

I think the biggest reason why we, as FemShep fans, become touchy about these stats is that they can possibly lead to even less exposure of FemShep, or for that matter, little to no inclination to include a fully realized heroine in Bioware's next game---whatever that might be. These kind of stats influence game development and marketing, no?

I never said liking or prefering femShep is ridiculous, so please let's make it clear, what I found ridiculous is that all of a sudden, a statistic saying that a big majority of players play maleShep appears and some femShep's huge fans (once again, I do like femShep too!) start saying, that is not possible, it must be skewed. MaleShep is just avatar, femShep is the real character, light at the end of a tunnel etc. so it just can't be right. Well, it can be true and it does not make femShep any worse..is all I wanted to say.

Also, if a casual gamer plays sheploo soldier, just because they want to shoot asap and do not bother with creating a custom character, how come 80+% of shepards have custom face?

Because you guys say that these statistics must be skewed and that Sheploo Soldier is inferior/sucks/femShep is elite just to make yourselves feel better about femShep. Question is, why? femShep is awesome and no statistic can change that. No need to trash Sheploo, Soldier class or casual gamers. Just my $0.02 though.

as kraidy said, it's lack of context. and again: how can they say 83% of people made a shep "to look like themselves" and call this a statistic? they could not get that data unless it was a) really just custom shep data (so why not say so?) or B) if they did a poll to get "i made a shep like me" info

those numbers might turn out to be right, but the info gathering method is whacked.

This.

I remember when Casey Hudson was gloating over these stats in that IGN article.  That is not a good sign of things to come.  It's not so much as exposure for FemShep, it's just that these stats would tell them where they need to put their resources.  If they go by these stats then unfortunately our FemSheps are going to have the same terrible animations, clipping, bugs,...etc in ME3.

The stats do seem skewed given FemShep's popularity on the BSN. People have offered explanations for it (myself included). Who said Sheploo Soldier 'sucks'? I just said casual gamers tend to play this combo more. That's it.

The BSN is pretty much the antithesis of the average player.  This site is populated by people who really like BioWare games for one reason or another.  The average player probably doesn't even know the company's name.  Remember, average includes the bottom half.  And the bottom half ... the less said about them, the better.
This site is not at all representative of the average player, or even the average gamer.  That would be IGN.

Yeah, agreed, and quite honestly, there's nothing ridiculous about wanting to play the game the way you enjoy it, if the option is available.  I would not have picked up ME1 if the only option was to play Soldier Sheploo.  Maybe I would have missed out on the experience -- but it would be a very different game, IMO, if the only option was Soldier Sheploo, and it might not have been worth my time.  I enjoy Obsidian's games but skipped Alpha Protocol, because I couldn't play as a woman.  You might think it's ridiculous -- but you probably very rarely have the dilemma of finding a video game that doesn't allow you to play your real life, or preferred gender.  You are entitled to your opinion, but telling others that they are wrong for having a different opinion isn't really constructive.

I brought up these stats because I worry about how they will affect ME3, and for FemShep players, it's a legitimate concern...there's nothing ridiculous about wanting the best experience possible while playing a game you enjoy.

Stopped there because the file size was getting mega again (138mb).  I suspect there is another 250-300mb of content in here up to now.  If you download all 4 files then you will have 565mb worth of femshep on your hard drive!

However some of realise this task has got a bit too huge for me.  The thread is getting more and more active, which is great.  Problem is saving and archiving everyone’s pictures is time consuming and heavy on your hard drives.  Especially since the thread is only 4 months old!

So Im sorry to say that im going to have to be picky going forwards.  Apologies in advance.  But from now on I think I am going to stick with saving artwork, unique and high quality images and other noteworthy pictures.   Basically creating folders of the best of femshep across the community.   That doesnt mean I dont appreciate your posts or the time and effort you spent putting into creating your screenshots if there not included.

Individually your folders arnt that large. SageQueen for example has 63 pics in the folder at under 5mb but together it all mounts up and there are more people who post in here then you think!

So keep up the good work and I hope this gives you some incentive to make your screenshots very eye catching!   Thanks for understanding everyone and dont worry I wont retire anytime soon!

As an industry professional, I can answer that question. Yes, they do influence what a developer does in the future. Developers and Publishers are not making games out of the kindness in their heaarts, its about profit, and handing out paychecks. They are going to cater to their biggest customer, and stats like this can spell certain doom for a segment of a customer base that prefers a more fair treatment.

 Also, @Sunnie22:

Thanks for bringing this up. I forgot that Casey Hudson directly commented on those stats, and how discouraging! I find that when certain members get into a debate about the importance of  female Shepard, in order to diminish her role in the game the stats mentioned earlier are brought up. I'd like to think that this kind of marginalization only highlights the importance of having this support thread. Image IPB

so nice to know i'm so firmly in the middle of the growing pack of female gamers. though i do wonder if they count things like mafia wars and farmville in that.

probably.

Not out of the kindness of their hearts no, but honestly the fact that they spent more time on animating the asari strippers than on femshep is just ridiculous.

For once we actually have a female main character who generally kicks ass without having giant knockers and dresses in outfits that makes the chain mail bikini pale in comparison.

I can accept that their marketing is leaning towards male gamers; but it is really discouraging if they would use those stats to put all their efforts on male shep and nothing on fem shep...

i don't think they will, given that they've gotten femshep this far and have gotten so many accolades for it. i think BW is in a weird place, where some fans go down on their knees and thank them for every little thing femshep or RP or LI or whatever your fave little piece of the ME universe is.

and then there are the people who are just there for the asari stripper boobies.

but yeah, i think they do a good job balancing it all. if LotSB is an indication of where it all is going, i feel like i'm in good hands. <--sage being overly optimistic again

LOL, yeah, that's the thing..it's understandable that they do cater to male audiences, but I think it's unfair to take that to the extreme so much where FemShep gets screwed over on a lot of things.

I know I could do without the over-sexualized asari dancers.

Eh, I have mixed feelings about LotSB, given the bugs and missing animations in the FemShep/Liara romance scene.  I know FemShep closes her legs in a dress (one-step forward) but the romance related stuff is two-steps back, IMO.

Well, they are strippers :) But I know what you are saying.

I could do without every Asari in a four mile radius hitting on my femshep.

Zynga is now worth more than EA, it would be a big mistake not to count those types of games, or to ignore those gamers.  There's a reason Bioware is jumping on the Facebook game bandwagon, it's profitable -- and it's a way to introduce their product to those potential gamers.  Even if we take the stats at face value, and they show that only eighteen percent of players are female, I think that Bioware would do well to think about how to attract more female players, instead of discounting the ones they already have.  Both Dragon Age and Mass Effect have some passionate female fans, and there's obviously something there to appeal to us...so why not play that up in marketing, and try to bring more female gamers in?

I think it feels like they're coming very slowly to this realization, but eventually, they'll get there.  It's just good business sense.
