Hmmm. I believe that ryn is upset over that comment because it's creator feels that the video game medium in general is catered toward males, and also feels pressured into playing as a male character because of this. Additionally, she also points out that she thinks the Mass Effect trilogy also adheres to this generalisation, indicative of the fact that FemShep is woefully neglected and under-represented. When ryn, who happens to be one of the most passionate and dedicated fans of FemShep and campaigns tirelessly to raise awareness for her, reads that comment, I think she's perfectly justified in feeling upset.

In short, the seeming apathy towards FemShep needs to stop, and she should not be considered a mere compliment to the DudeShep version of the game.

Wow, Noah seriously rocks that dress, Chignon. That devilish pixie-look she has on occasion just nails it <3
Argh, why couldn't we have a scene where she sits down with her legs crossed like Aria and every other woman in the game does...

Thank you, Delerius!

Meh, I agree with you *shrug*.
In general I'm reluctant to judge others for what comes down to personal preference.

The thing that is dismaying about the post above, is more the reason she plays as a male character: because she feels like the developers make a better game for male characters because they are designed with men in mind.  That is disappointing.

Just because this is the femshep thread, I don't think it means everyone has to be hardline "Femshep is the better choice".  I hope that's not the spirit of the thread.  We love playing as femshep--that doesn't mean it should be imposed on other players.  I support femshep because I like playing as a female character, and want an equal-quality game as her male counterpart, not because I want everyone to love femshep over maleshep.

Hmmm, you have another fireproof suit on you?

i understand most of the games are designed for male characters and targeted for male players. and i agree, that sucks.
but the thing is here in these forums, i keep hearing "i'm male, so i play maleshep", "i'm female, so i play femshep", like that's the only and good enough reason to do it.
hmmm...

I agree that there's quite the disparity in how main characters are treated depending on their genders. One franchise that I can say absolutely treats genders equally is Fable.

Personally, I don't care what gender I play with. So long as the guy is sexy, I can do it. XD

But I know that others don't feel the same way and I understand why they do. It'd be nice to see a game with an equally-treated female protagonist that kicks a lot of ass. Mass Effect almost gets there, but femShep seems to be a bit of an afterthought by the devs.

If Samara were an actual romance option, I would definitely have paired her up with Devi in atleast one of my playthroughs. I imagine their relationship would be like that between two intimate knights from medieval times:

Guess I'll have to "settle" for Kaiden. ;)

Same here. Every time I go through with my canon shep I try to romance Samara, even though I know it's futile. It may sound strange but I do it because I want there to be consequences for trying to cheat on Kaidan. I doubt there will be, but I'm setting my playthroughs up for it regardless. We'll see I suppose. If Samara becomes a romance option in ME3 I'll totally be suckered into that though.

That dress really gives Shepard one helluva bosom.

And I don't think there's any other Shep who can so broadly pull off tooth-melting cute, achingly soulful, drop-dead sexy, and downright fricking curl-your-toes-and-melt-your-gonads scary the way Noah can.  You wouldn't think it at first glance, but she just totally works as an utterly believable Adept Shepard.

Whoa the thread took a serious turn. Honestly when I bought ME2 and pressed the new game option and saw female I was intrigued. After making my self-insertion character (Since I can never seem to enjoy making a male shep like I do making femsheps) I've played femshep exclusivley except for two other male sheps (one that save Kaiden instead of Ashley and one I made to reseble Zach Levi from Chuck.) so I have at least 7 Femsheps to 3 male sheps. I guess I'm going through a writing phase where I'm starting to make my main chracters female instead of being the generic meathead action figure and Femshep helps.

I've got one of each and enjoy them for different reasons. Still, there are a few things that devs overlooked with femShep that ought to have been no-brainers IMO

Yes, very much the man walk. Fable 3 made sure to do separate walking animations (lady hero swings her hips) for their heroes and I don't understand why BW didn't. Because another developer (one with a reputation for leaving out details even) did separate male/female animations, I can't buy any excuses as to why it wasn't done in ME2.

The other one that bugs me is the stick arms and the legs wide open while in a dress. Both are seriously unattractive.

Wow Chignon! Those are some impressive "doodles"! I especially love how you shaded Indra's hair and detailed Kyrie's profile. Thanks for sharing and for thinking of our femSheps when you're bored in class, haha. :)

~~

As for what is being discussed above, I did not take issue with the anonymous commenter wanting to play as male characters because I also enjoy playing as male characters. The problem is that she chooses male characters because that's what several games tend to favor. I think Fallout: New Vegas is another game that treats female players equally. The game even has several realistically portrayed homosexuals. So hurrah for Fallout!

Honestly, most of the standard rpgs I've played (mainly Bethesda) treat females equally as far as content is concerned. It's the rest of the market, the less role-playing oriented section, that has quite the lack of female heroes. Mass Effect crosses genres so maybe that's why femShep isn't treated as well as a femWarden or a femLoneWanderer or a femRedguard/Dunmner etc.

So maybe it's a gaming genre thing. Action/adventure? Could be either gender, slightly greater percentage of male protags. Shooter? All male protags. True RPG? Anything goes.

really? how so? i can't draw very well, so i'm curious what makes something hard or easy to draw. to me, it's all hard.

@ flies: really? huh. may have to try fallout.  okay, that's a little OT, but as all the games i want to play don't come out for a year (save da2), what are some games that have good RP elements (Besides BW's games). if i can actually play as a female OR if they have LIs, that's a bonus. been looking at borderlands. (and feel free to PM me if this is getting OT, but yeah, i wanna know)

@Sagequeen: Off-topic but yeah, I recommend you try Fallout:New Vegas for the PC. As far as companions, dialogue, and story goes, it's a definite improvement over Fallout 3 and the game takes note of your gender and choices. I would even say that going against a particular faction in this game is much more satisfying when you play as a woman. Trust me. ;)

No LI's, however.

Sorry for going off-topic guys. I couldn't help myself.

I think it's the combination of her features. They are all very unique - the big eyes, broad nose and mouth. I have about seven sketches of her and all are unfinished. It's a real challenge to draw her. I wish I could explain it better. Image IPB

Thank you.  I really don't care what people's preferences are but I was just bummed that the commenter felt that since females are shortchanged in gaming, she had to choose the male character in order to get the best experience.
