Scarring mechanics
I'm only on page 42 yet, so I apologize if someone has mentioned this already. I came across several posts mentioning the scars, and how they obviously looks ridiculous. There are
texture mods out there that allow you to replace them with the scars from ME1, but if you're like me and actually enjoy the cybernetic scars - albeit in moderation - there are ways to easily modify the stages the scarring goes through. I like the way they look on the default level you have as you start the game (level 3), but as your renegade score goes up and you reach level 4 and 5, it starts looking stupid; especially with the glowing red eyes. What I did was to edit the scar levels to never display any more glowing scars or glowing eyes, and make level 3 the maximum amount of scarring shown. This way I can play my renegade Shepard with scarring that suits her, due to the premature abortion of the Lazarus Project. In my opinion, it makes her look just a little bit more badass. With this modification, scars will still start fading if you go for the paragon path (this can also be easily prevented, if you prefer), and the med-bay upgrade still works as it should by removing them altogether if you apply it. I'll upload an already-modified coalesced file for those interested, but I'll also explain below how you can do it yourself.
1. Download Coalesced Editor
here.
2. Make a back-up of the unmodified coalesced.ini file found in
C:\\\\Mass Effect 2\\\\BioGame\\\\Config\\\\PC\\\\Cooked - just in case.
3. Start up the Coalesced Editor, properly configuring game paths and what not.
4. In the box on your left, labelled 'search critera,' type in 'scars' (without quotation marks) and hit enter.
5. Now there should be several search results in the box below. If you highlight the results one by one, you'll see various text lines and numbers in the upper-right. These all represent at what level of paragon/renegade the scars will appear, and what severity level they should have. I haven't deciphered everything there, but you'll quickly spot something of interest; the numbers given after most of the lines (eg.
"BIOG_HMM_HED_Alignment.Emissive.Face_EmisScars_01") . These numbers represent the level of scarring displayed on the character for the specified paragon/renegade level.
6. This might all look complicated to most, but I figured it wouldn't be more complicated than altering these numbers for all the search results. By changing all the numbers in the search results that read
04 or
05, I basically eliminated the higher levels of scarring (levels 4 and 5), locking the scarring displayed to level 3 or lower. So all you have to do is highlight the search results one by one, and each time you see any numbers reading
04 or
05, go on and edit those to read
03 instead. Leave everything else as it is; no need to complicate matters further.
7. Similarly, you can also edit any numbers reading
01 or
02, if you don't want the scars to fade away if you pursue a paragon path. Again, none of this disables the med-bay upgrade that removes all traces of scarring, leaving it fully functional for any other characters you want to give a clean, scar-free face.
8. Once you're done, check out the menu up top, click
Commands and choose
Rebuild Coalesced. Your coalesced.ini file will now have been altered to contain the modifications you've just made, and you can have a moderately scarred Shepard, without ever fearing you'll turn into some sort of Sith Terminator.
For convenience, I've made three variants for direct download. Unpack into
C:\\\\Mass Effect 2\\\\BioGame\\\\Config\\\\PC\\\\Cooked and replace the coalesced.ini file found there, after making a backup, of course.
Level 3 Renegade - This one makes it so no matter how high you renegade score climbs, your scars will never become more severe than when you wake up at the beginning of the game. This prevents glowing, red eyes from ever appearing. Paragons will still see their scars fading gradually. The med-bay upgrade still works as normal.
Level 3 Paragon - This one does the same as above, but also prevents scars on paragon characters from fading away, locking the scarring to level 3, no matter what type of character you play. The med-bay upgrade still works as normal.
Level 2 for Both - For those of you who think even a level 3 is too much, but still want
some amount of scarring. This locks the scarring for both renegade and paragon characters to level 2, having them appear fainter than the standard scarring, without being completely gone. The med-bay upgrade still works as normal.
Edit: I've no idea why these forums have problems with the formatting for the installation paths I've specified, but hopefully it's easy enough to understand anyway.
