I find this one to be her best one.  It really shows off the internal conflict she has, IMO.

However, her more humorous side comes out better in this one.

But yeah... First one...:?

Wow, that was a great post! I think I found myself agreeing with everything you said, which relate basically to a lot of sex-positive feminism points.
Thanks for your words! Gotta admit it's a big relief reading them, I'm always so unsure and afraid of being misunderstood.
And also I'm glad you like the pic. I'll link it when I'm finished, but it might take a while.

See, I'm not a fan of feminism period, sex-positive or otherwise.  In my experience, feminism tends to focus on one aspect of being a woman and blow that single aspect way way way out of proportion as if it were the most important thing in the universe.  That kind of two-dimensional approach would be parody if it weren't politics, and does just as much a disservice to women as trying to force men to be more feminine does to them.  Healthy and proper function can only be achieved with balance and holism, just like everything else in life.  Myopism never increases the clarity of the image, even if it is self-induced.

Well said Sable, excellent point.

Forgot to end with my femShep-centric point that I was actually building up towards.

The holism I mentioned is why femShep is so successful, in my opinion more successful than manShep.  ManShep is pretty one-dimensional.  He's the badass space marine who kicks ass, chews bubble gum, and gets plenty of sex from the swooning females of his entourage.  We've seen this innumerable times before.  It's about as fresh and new as a six-week old trout.

FemShep on the other hand, because she's written as a generic, masculine character, but is voiced by a wonderfully skilled and emotive female actor, comes off as that strong yet multi-faceted character that perfectly embodies a true feminine ideal.  She's competent and tough, cold and hard without being distant, kind and gentle without being maudlin, sensual and sexy without being sexualized... in short, she's real and she's human (despite being apparently oblivious to her own death and supposed resurrection) while still being heroic.  The only thing really missing from her is the motherhood aspect, which is the sole area where she falls short of Ripley in my opinion.  Still, that would be really hard to address in a game like this, I don't know if it's ever been done in this medium, so I can forgive the writing that single shortcoming.

Iconic? I suppose this one.

I posted it (an old variant) on page 200 and I think it's still the most viewed one of any of the shots of Danielle. Though I have two Shepards and I think Colleen's shot would have to be this one.

Re: Iconic photos of my Shep:

They aren't actually action shots, if you can believe it. Mostly just...talking with people, whether it's small talk with Chakwas or something quite larger like Miri's LM or Tali's LM.

What about Grunt?  Shepard raised him from "birth".    I like to think of Grunt surprising Shepard with a homemade card on Mother's Day.  It would be a crayon drawing of him with a stick-figure Shepard riding on sharks or something.

Joking aside, I agree with everything you've said so far in this discussion.

In the end I think feminism just means "women are people too" for me, that's all XD

I have to confess I have yet to play maleShep. I don't have enough interest, and my femShep feels canon for me to the point where playing others doesn't feel right at all. It was pointed in the facecode database thread, but yeah, I just got used to a certain Shep face, with that certain Shep voice.

@Chignon: that looks beautiful! I'm really amazed.

Again, well said!  This is EXACTLY why she really works for me as a great feminine heroine....or hero in general for that matter.  I'm a guy, and I get tired of that "classic" ManShep character too, though they do have their correct "context" however.  That is what really drew me to FemShep:

"She's competent and tough, cold and hard without being distant, kind and gentle without being maudlin, sensual and sexy without being sexualized"

Ellen Ripley is a great example, as is Linda Hamilton's Sarah Connor.

I will admit that I do have a bit of a "fan crush" on my FemShep (seems allot of us do for our Sheps), and those points are what I find attractive and generally engaging about her, more so than her physical appearence.
I must say though....she is cute    lol!

Oh my god, the cutest scenario ever, you don't even know. Almost the most lol worthy. I like to think of Cam as Grunt's mentor, if only so far as to try and get him to work with the other members of the Dirty Dozen instead of always going out and doing his own thing in battle.

Thought I have seen some Grunt fan art of him being sick and Shep reading some stories to him while he's hunched over covered in blankets with a box of tissues near him. It was adorable.

The one thing that worries me about voiced protagonists in games are well, that I won't like it for my character, but I can't imagine a better voice actor for Shepard than J.Hale, so that's a real joy.
On my first playthrough I actually felt the face I had made didn't fit the voice, it looked too... young I guess, but so I realized the way I was thinking of the character didn't fit the roleplaying at all. (so I remade it)

On the pics, I just like this cut scene a lot so uh, for the lack of an 'iconic' one

yeah, me too. on both counts. again, femshep is the hero i was trying to find as a kid. i couldn't ever decide if i wanted to marry han solo or BE han solo. this was a serious dilemma for me as a child. i never occurred to me that one could run the ship AND be the good-looking girl with the cute guy AT THE SAME TIME. oh, femshep. where were you? (and kaidan, where the h*ll are you? stupid email with it's no reply button).

anyhow. iconic femshep pics? i've posted them before, but i will not hesitate to do so again:

ME1

Image IPB

^ not the prettiest picture, but it so sums up my playsytle with kyrie. barrier, pistols, singularity, and manual commands for all squaddies. kaidan with me everywhere. hardcore or insanity difficulty. yeah baby.

Image IPB

Contrasted to ME2, where she just feels more alone, even when fighting with a team. still with the pistols, though. and the light armor.

and it's interesting how she seems to become a little more jaded from ME1:

Image IPB

to ME2

Image IPB

it's like she has this look of eternal weariness. for RP value, it's pretty amazing. i just hope she has a happy end in ME3. i've gotten so attached to this character!

@Sable Phoenix - you always seem to word my feelings on a subject in a way that I'm unable to articulate myself.  admittedly words are not my strong suit.  love reading your posts.

Iconic images:
Vera Rose
Image IPB
as much as I love the pic of her smiling here - this is more fitting to her personality; grim determination is her MO; Mindoir, Torfan, the Citadel - she's somehow always emerging from the rubble and fires of hell to fight another day. haven't played through ME2 yet.

Teagan
Image IPB
it's not a screenshot, but it is a tribute to my favorite femshep Teagan. a frosty and methodical infiltrator who never has a hair out of place. look below the surface though and she's still the same scrappy kid she was on earth: a little unsure of herself but determined to come out on top

That's a pretty bold thing to say. I feel that I owe a lot towards feminism and were it not for such a movement--ongoing as it may be--I would not be in a position to enjoy the benefits of living as a 25-year old woman in 2010 with access to the same freedoms and choices as men. I think with most any movement there are points to disagree on and changes to be made, but perhaps feminism is more a mindset (that of equality in all aspects of life) than a movement at this point. Besides that, it's strange to think that such a movement is out of place in a world where women still struggle for simple freedoms in certain countries. In other words, without feminism I don't think you would be in a position to discard it as harmful, and at this point, maybe you take it for granted?

Sorry if this is off-topic but I enjoyed reading Sable's and Sage's post so felt the urge to reply.

it is OT, sorta, but i do agree. i'll sit the fence a little and say i can see both sides. feminism as a movement has made huge strides, but i also think it eventually can (and in many cases has) placed hindrances of its own on women. anything that groups women as a whole and doesn't account for individuals will do that.

but back to femshep. as an individual, she rocks. i wish i could get more of my friends addicted to mass effect so they could see just how awesome she is. sadly, most of them thing video games are dumb. *sigh*
