Anyone else's Shep's have memories from their teenage years, of old friends or first loves?

Yeah.  Earthborn, so she grew up an orphan.  Broke out of the orphanage at 13 and found her way to a group of other homeless kids her age.  Fell in love with one of the girls she ran with, but couldn't see that it was a one-sided relationship.  Had a knack for technology and sneaking around (which is why she was able to run away from the orphanage), so she used to do all sorts of things for her girl and the rest of the crew, despite the fact that they never returned the favor.  Eventually her skills caught the attention of less-than-savory types who wanted to use her for bigger things.  She accepted at the urging of her girl.  On one job, she managed to break into a lab where she was supposed to steal some schematics for something or other and wound up getting caught by an alliance officer while still inside.  Rather than arresting her, he tells her that she's got two choices.  Continue down the path that she's on, or join the alliance and work for something greater.

That night she tells her friends what happened, and suggests that they all join together, to get away from this life.  The next day she heads over to the pickup for the new recruits and realizes none of her friends, nor her girl, came.  She gets on the shuttle and never looks back.

I haven't even worked on Shai's backstory in detail yet but for Kathryn she remembers the first girl she ever went out with.  They were both in the gangs and eventually drifted apart but Danica taught her how to be a respectful girlfriend.  It also took her a long time to get over the married woman she fell in love with.  After her, she didn't even want to try serious relationships again so she just had flings.  At least until Shepard met Liara.  If anyone is intersted they can check out her backstory here.

Shadow_Soul wrote...

I have a question as well, does your FemShep ever vent?

Yeah, Kathryn vents to her close friends.  On the SR1 she vented to Liara and Ashley.  Two years later she found good friends in Samara and Kasumi.  She also works out to blow off some steam.
It took Shai some time to open up to Liara but she eventually did back on the SR1.  She is the only person Shai confides in and vents to.

I'm sure many of you are familiar with the Definitive Mass Effect Cast Interview, but I'm just reading Part 4 right now and one comment stood out and made me go "Heh."

Retroplayer- How do you want Mass Effect to be remembered?

Jennifer Hale (Commander Shepard)- As an awesome game that’s even better when you play as the Female Shepard.

Big thumbs up from Sandi!  For whatever reason, ME felt so much more natural to me playing a fem!Shep than as my male.

FemShep and Jen Hale just deserve more credit for being so awesome. I'm already getting depressed over the fact that the tale of the unique, strong, female hero is going to come to a close in about a year. : (

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!

But It really is really sad.  However we can take pride in knowing she has set a new bar in female protagonists in gaming and beyond!  Although Its going to be really hard for anyone else to top or even match her!  Image IPB

I just have to wonder about a few things.  Do most casual gamers even realize you can play as female in Mass Effect?  If it was more widely known that you could, would we see more people playing FemShep?  I just know that many of my friends who don't know much about the game think you can only play as Sheploo and this actually turns them off from picking up the game.

Also, I usually see Sheploo or ManShep as the Shepard that reviewers and game columists use too.  I have to wonder if they have even given FemShep a try?  I remember that interview about a month or so ago, N'Gai Croal was asking for more FemShep marketing and Geoff Knightely(think that's his name) seemed really shocked that he played FemShep.

I just feel like FemShep is a secret but a best kept one that I wish more people would give a try.  The reason I'm getting so depressed about the end of her story is the fact that she is a rarity in gaming that we might not see for a long time again.  If she doesn't receive the recognition she deserves then future developers will never realize how refreshing it is to play a lead female who is not overly sexualized.  Bioware says it's all about your choices but they sure do try hard to make you embrace Sheploo.

/end rant

Sheploo... To be perfectly honest I don't really like him and never played MaleShep. For me only FemShep is the main character of Mass Effect!

And again it's Jane :)

I have this vague memory of being pleasantly surprised to discover I could play as a female Shepard, either discovering that detail no more than a week or two before release or actually on the first time I played the game. I then remember thinking that I didn't know why I had assumed that one couldn't play as female considering BioWare's history, but I think the Mass Effect series is always testing my assumptions in this manner.

I really don't think so and I haven't seen or heard anywhere about Bioware hiring a female model.  It's well known that they hired Vanderloo for Male Shepard.

Duno.... but I never played default femshep... I got only two and never played fem shep default it just..... not captivating. Maybe because of our culture or w/e but her face is not interesting.

Not sure why plenty of games have male or females leads without any type of actors behind it. Not sure why Bioware is not doing so good with it. Hell, for example Morrigan on DA not sure she looks that much her voice actor and it came out somewhat good.

but w/e best shep right now is default... whish I could just give him hair and tim's eyes. Best fem shep is one I found in the faces database.

I doubt there's a model for default FemShep as you can make her in the character creator.

Default Jane isn't based on anyone, considering how her face can be created using the in-game character creator. Unlike Sheploo, for instance.

I just know that I'm going to get loud a few months from now so we can see some screenshots of FemShep in ME3 around the same time they show MaleShep.

The DA2 team has been really responsive to the FemHake fans and I hope we can get the same treatment. Yeah, I know that's a longshot. ; P

I find it a lot easier to make nice looking fem!Sheps than male!Sheps, that's for sure.
