Well for me it would certainly be easier to RP my Shep as being from Europe, and specifically UK (where I currently live). But like I said before, the accent is kind of difficult to get around. Just have to avoid writing any environmental scenes when I work on my fanfic hehe.

I focused on very general things in mine since I never named an actual city, things that would be pretty common to any slum i.e. abandoned places, dirt in the streets, etc.  In any case, you're looking at a story that takes place over a century from now, so things can chance and don't need to be exact.  I would keep things in mind, but wouldn't think you needed to wrack your brains over small details that can be waved away by the passage of time.

Yeah that's true. I also had this theory that since our appearance became more and more generic (blonde hair and blue eyes are rare) and since countries came together in unions, accents would be blended out as well.
Nigel Fishnchips proved that theory wrong. Damn you sexy sniper man! *shakes fist*

@Chignon

The "renegade" options during Kaidan's romance scene were way more hilarious and fit my Kaidan romancing Shepard better than the paragon one  "Abuse of authority"

Europe, yeah. It would be nice to see some Europeans in Mass Effect 3. I would be thrilled to see a Finn there.

Actually I picked the Renegade option because I didn't want to get "This can't change anything, Shepard.". But aside from that I just adore Hale and Sbarge's delivery. Image IPB

No. After seeing the trailer, I think London would make a good choice from the story perspective.

for an extra character that we pick up after london's destruction... sure. But for Shep. I think he can be from anywhere really. Not because of the customization but. To be far outthere.

No matter the Shep, he or she is from the northern hemisphere... take your pick.

I think there's reason I didn't wanted change Marge's background from colonist. I wanted her to be a mix of races without any specific - well - roots.

only thing to that.... I hope ME3 has voice.... what the devil you woudl call that... different actors for shep? or would that be too costly?

Like when DA has different accents. elegant... street etc etc.

have

Voice Box:
English>French>Russian>Asian>Western English

man would that be sweet for diversity.

Come to think of it though... would require butt loads of memory to tape every single accent....sigh one can hope.

Erica is from New Jersey and helped the reds smuggle soylent red and yellow from across New York City. She left for the Alliance before Soylant Green hit the market.

I can imagine her last line in ME3. "Reaper Goo is people!!"  :P

Seriously, she is from New Jersey.  She lost the accent while in the Alliance.  Most of her squad was from Canada.

I don't think it's likely or even necessary. Shepard's accent could have lessened over the time. It's not unusual.

Agreed on both. still would liek the option of a Russian accented Shep. The Alliance determines colony rights for countries so is easy to think, like you said, that his or her accent would have lessened or downright dissapeared over the years. But also is not hard to think they might keep their accent.

In anycase with the universal translator we might as well think the accent is there but the translator gets rid of it for example.

... still would love my fem and male renegades to have a Russian accent... would just fit perfectly.

Well when your femshep is a spacer she probably just picked up on the accents she was surrounded by at a young age.  She could have been born in London, Terra Nova or Istanbul.

Actually I think mine was born in LlanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogochLlanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch

I have so many Sheps now, that I couldn't possibly go into detail (re. background info) with all of them! Maybe I'll pick my one or two favourites and expand a bit (that'd be Alessia and Jade)

Somehow the phonetic pronounciation doesn't help me one bit in understanding how it's pronounced [ˌɬanvairˌpuɬɡwɪ̈nˌɡɪ̈ɬɡoˌɡɛrəˌχwərnˌdrobuɬˌɬantɪ̈ˌsiljoˌɡoɡoˈɡoːχ]

lol

Here's a question to those who play fem Sheps with spacer background. Would you like to meet your parents in ME3 or do you like the fact that it's only a voice and no image.

I picked NYC for my Earthborn Shepard b/c I could have sworn that it was stated somewhere that Earthborn Shep is from NYC....I think I just read this in a fanfic, however.

I have a tendency to confuse fics with canon XD

However, I'm still cool with NYC.

You could just call it a limitation of the medium.  Characters speak North American english (at least in the game's original form) because that's where it was made.  Just like in movies where all the ancient Romans or whatever are inexplicably English (like UK English) I would imagine in true Mass Effect future not everyone speaks english, especially not the aliens.  It's assumed for the most part translators are used, it's just not implemented in-game because it would be unwieldy.  Or it's possible everyone's speaking a version of galactic basic trade language and it's in english for the sake of the audience (us.)

Lucky for me Femshep sounds just how I'd imagine her to sound.  I might assume in the future North American english has gone global as the dominant language, except good ol' Nigel Fishnchips proves this to be untrue.  And thank goodness for that.  I don't want to live in a future w/o sexy Brits.  Lol.  I watch too much BBC.

To a certain extent, yes. However, I do worry that any possible meeting would deviate from my Shepard's parental relationships that I have established in my headcanon. It would be cool to see Hannah, though.

Additionally, it would be great if Shepard and Liara were to introduce Hannah and Aethyta to each other.

haha not suprised Aeowyn! Image IPB

Better off using its english name of    "Saint Mary's Church in the hollow of white hazel near a rapid whirlpool and the Church of Saint Tysilio near the red cave".

So glad I dont live there or know anybody who lives there!  I would hate to send them a postcard  Image IPB

Anyway in terms of Shepards mum, I would love to hear her give her words of support.  That was a really emotional scene in ME and really added to her charecter.  The email was so disappointing in ME2.  Even if they cant get the same voice actor, I dont mind.  just having a conversation or a few spoken words would be perfect Image IPB

Coincidently, this is the angle I chose for Keira's background with a same conclusion. What I find most intriguing is based upon what you said. Holly and Keira would be thought polar opposites despite experience the similar series of event. For that reason though, I doubt they could get along. :P

I just have to wonder about a few things. Do most casual gamers even realize you can play as female in Mass Effect? If it was more widely known that you could, would we see more people playing FemShep? I just know that many of my friends who don't know much about the game think you can only play as Sheploo and this actually turns them off from picking up the game.

Also, I usually see Sheploo or ManShep as the Shepard that reviewers and game columists use too. I have to wonder if they have even given FemShep a try? I remember that interview about a month or so ago, N'Gai Croal was asking for more FemShep marketing and Geoff Knightely(think that's his name) seemed really shocked that he played FemShep.

I just feel like FemShep is a secret but a best kept one that I wish more people would give a try. The reason I'm getting so depressed about the end of her story is the fact that she is a rarity in gaming that we might not see for a long time again. If she doesn't receive the recognition she deserves then future developers will never realize how refreshing it is to play a lead female who is not overly sexualized. Bioware says it's all about your choices but they sure do try hard to make you embrace Sheploo.

/end rant

If forum discussion is to be believed, then no Femshep was a easily recognizable option. I have heard a number of people even initially writing off the series because they had perceived you could not play as a female character. Otherwise, they simply could not be bothered. The game world still remains primarily male based and therefore they are the target audience. Casual gamers are unlikely to replay a game and thus most adhere to their own gender.

In regards to reviewers. It is mostly regulated to choosing the default choices to rush into the game. They are meant only to offer insight and opinions based on everything the game has to offer. While you could argue the mentioning of Femshep would be amongst those categories. It is largely thought irrelevant because in the end, gender does not alter the game's story or mechanics. Therefore, it is not their concern. Prima is an exception to the norm, having written the entire ME2 strategy whilst using a custom made Femshep. Ironically, Miranda is still the highlighted romance choice when hinted upon but their showcasing of Femshep was indeed a nice touch.

Ultimately, female characters having a more worthwhile role that transcends fanservice will be determined on the demographic. When becomes apparent that the gaming world is not male dominated. Companies will heed to the demands of female gamers who are not amused by poorly designed fanservice games akin to FFX-2 and anything Tecmo makes. Tecmo's mechanic they actually titled "the boob mechanic" is not helping. >.>

It also does not help a large quantity of games are Halo and Call of Duty rip offs, where gender makes no difference online. In any event, Bioware at least remains one of the rare few to offer they alternative. I certainly believe as the ratio becomes less one-sided. It will change... but that is probably at least five years away.

Femshep has a fair share of Youtube attention. So she is being made popular.

For the Earthborn quire. Only my Sheploo file chose that pre-service. Perhaps, I ought to remedy that with a Femshep run.

I haven't decided which city Hrist grew up in yet, but I always liked the idea of her growing up in a South American city like Buenos Aires or Sao Paulo. The games gives the impression that people have more freedom to move about and live in different counties/continents from the ones they were born, unlike today. I did decide she was born in Europe and that's where her parents were from, but they moved to one of the above cities when she was still very young.

I didn't want to pick a US city as it's the obvious choice, and I wanted something a bit different. No offence intended to those of you from the states.

Shepard makes note of her use of a translator at least once, when talking to Thane.  When he calls her "Siha" the first time, she mentions her translator not working there.  Also in Lair of the Shadow Broker the yahg is said to know 14 languages without use of a translator.  So it seems to me that all the aliens at least are each speaking their own languages, and that possibly could extend to the humans as well.

I find it pretty likely that earth speaks a common language by that point in time though.
