You couldn't pick a 'genre' more anti female-protagonist than noir. Noir films are littered with and some would argue defined by male protagonists struggling with/failing to fit in with their changing societal role and suffering (terribly) for any attempt to avoid it. Some of the best noir films ever are about empowered women making mincemeat of hapless males unable to adapt/keep up.
I often see this quoted categorically and am guilty of doing it myself in the past, but I have come to disagree. They each have their strong lines/moments. Meer absolutely nails the lines in the Shadow Broker DLC whereas I didn't react nearly as well to Hale. And yes, Jennifer Hale's voice work is several orders of magnitude better than Mark Meer's!
RE: playing opposite gendered characters...
As a male myself, I find it difficult to play wide-ranged male characters. I tend to identify with them a bit and they end up reflecting my own morals/foibles.
Playing as female Shepard lets me explore extremes of character more easily. Its easier to treat them as characters in their own story and make decisions/choices appropriate to their character if they differ wildly from choices I'd make for myself.
I would never have explored the Garrus romance even if it was offered as a same sex option for example, but playing as femshep I was still able to see that content.

Why is it noir?

Is that directed at me? If so...
Yes, a lot of noir films feature a femme fatale. classic noir is famous for this, as well as it's black and white visual style. That doesn't mean it can't be adapted to something outside the usual cookie-cutter formula. Modern noir has quite a few strong females (that aren't always villains). It's a broad term, used to reference stylish films... films that are usually sexualized and have a cynical attitude.
I believe I captured the cynical rather well in the beginning, followed by the sexy in the second half.
I don't see why it can't be noir and have a female protagonist. Who ever accomplished anything interesting or new by following the rules?
EDIT:
If you'd like to discuss it further, send me a PM. Don't want to derail the thread if possible.

Noir is all about depicting depression and anxiety with incredibly sexy & powerful visuals. The story tropes are just as, if not more important than the visual style. The formula is critical.

Mildred Pierce springs to mind as classic noir film that has a female as typical noir protagonist. A housewife hard done by her philandering husband and catty daughter who rather than accept it, tries to break free and live life for herself. Society wont let her. Empowered women in noir who come out ahead in the end aren't often the protagonists.
I guess I can see similarities between Bridget Gregory in The Last Seduction and renegade Femshep. But I'd only be satisfied if at the end of the renegade story arc, she can blow up/away her misguided helpers and make off like a selfish bandit. In fact I would love that...

Which was exactly what I was trying to do in my video. Especially the first half.
Anyway, I don't think it's appropriate to debate what is or isn't 'noir' here. I consider it a broader formula, you consider it more refined. I'll agree to disagree.
It's an age old argument that I'd rather not get into.

This video is basically about Holly's struggles, including ME1 and her relationships in ME2. Heavily inspired by old-fashioned noir and Sin City. Hope you guys enjoy.
Don't know how long this will be up, though, because I had to do a content ID dispute with YouTube. It seriously gives me a headache someone can't make a fanvid (which nets them no profit whatsoever) without jumping through hoops for Fair Use.
That was a fantastic video, Aislinn. You rawk
And yeah, boo to youtube, usually even if they let you use it under Fair Use they will them proceed to block it for everyone outside the United States. <_<

Oops.

I really like this scene. Liara reminding Shepard that commander is not the center of the Universe. Shepard's just shutting up. Priceless.

Standard "awesome frowning" pose...

And "how Marge easily derails from paragon path". Kaidan will be dissapointed. But, hey! I've tried diplomacy first, he didn't listen! xD

And absolute winrar of this drinking game is...

Mordin? What are you doing back there?

And that's how she divided by zero...

Funny how you can use NPCs as ladders to infiinty and beyond.
Since this happened after just finishing Mordin's mission, i got running through corridors in loop - all doors were unopenable. Reeeeloaaaad.
