Yeah, what does that mean to them, though? Especially when considering they throw out those '80% play DudeShep' statistics.
I have a conspiracy theory on that![]()
And just remember 95% of all statistics are made up on the spot

I've had this screenshot sat in my fraps folder for about a month now and this seems like an appropriate time to wheel it out.

And another example why all the marketing drones should be launched into the sunFem Shep is the fan favorite though but not mkting.

Working in the video game industry myself, I cannot agree more with this statement.

Hey! Nice to see you. I made a new video if you want to check it out in my signature link. We've all been on a noir kick as of late.
I'm very disappointed to read that blog. It makes me want to sit down and have a talk with that guy. Sorry, but I find FemShep to be far more iconic and powerful than Sheploo. He's boring, generic and pretty much like a majority of main characters in a lot of games. Way to be groundbreaking, Bioware.
How can they just ignore the response of their fans? How can they ignore the influx of female gamers who are grateful to have an amazing female protagonist to play?
They made Sheploo the face of Mass Effect through their own doing. If they created just a few trailers/advertisements/images with a female Shepard, it would likely increase their sales (at least among those unaware you can play a custom Shep) and make people aware of that option. And now they are giving Female Hawke the same treatment...
/facepalm
Shame on you, sir. Open mouth, insert foot.

Grrr. Helllooo Bioware, ManShep is only iconic because you have made him the iconic Shepard. 'scuse me while I simmer a bit. I'm against RPGs having an iconic protagonist in the first place because I feel like they should be a construct of the player. That's marketing for you.

They have tried to create a recognisable protagonist, like for example, Marcus Fenix from Gears of War. Everyone recognises Gears instantly because of the default character and can associate with it. Bioware have done the same thing with Sheploo. I can understand why it has been marketed that way to some degree but the major problem is that this strategy is flawed for an RPG. You dont have a set default character like Marcus, it changes for everyone. It only really applies to casual gamers who don't get into the series, do one default play through of the guy they have seen in magazines and thats it!
Nice to see who you really cater for! For the true fans (who remain loyal regardless, which this strategy counts on) this applies:
#1: Not everyone plays as default
#2: Not everyone plays as Male
Anyone who has played the game knows of customisation of your character and choice of gender. In fact the games true fans love the game as they can create who they want to create. Sheploo has no relevance to these people, which is a huge chunk of the fanbase. We tolerate and accept sheploo for the most part. But he isn't relevant to us because the game is customisable.

What I find incredibly frustrating is the fact that BioWare have seemingly missed, or even worse ignored, the opportunity to craft a truly iconic and memorable female sci-fi protagonist, similar to Ellen Ripley, Sarah Connor or Samus Aran. FemShep could have become synonymous with the Mass Effect IP, and a celebrated female lead in a medium dominated by males. Instead, they chose the "safe" option of utilising a generic white male lead. It's incredibly annoying.

to add to this, I like trailers with a dark figure. Like the ME3 trailer... and although you can tell the body of Shep is male, a bit more effort could be made to either have reflection of someone's eyes watch earth so you dont realize the face behind it, nor the body.
In anycase just to add to yer post. RPG's can't really have definite genders on their lead characters if the main point of the game is cuztomization .

They could have just as easily made a really unique female model like they did for Sheploo and used her alongside him or just on her own. They just didn't choose to.
This has always been on my list of "I wish they would have done this" - list. I am not knocking the wonderful custom creations people have come up with using the creator, but fact is: It's limited in how realistic the characters are going to look, and no custom character (male or female) will ever look as detailed as Sheploo. Would have been nice to have a female version.
One of the many reasons I'm pretty excited for DA2; default femhawke looks awesome.

Yep! We could have had that...
I definitely consider FemShep the Ellen Ripley of video games. In my own head, anyway. It's a shame they completely overlooked that opportunity. What a waste, really.

FemShep is my canon, a million times over. I've beaten ME1 and ME2 around a dozen times with a female Shepard, and ME2 just once with a ManShep to see what it was like. To me, Commander Shepard will always be a woman.
(Or do you mean guys as in male players specifically?)

Well, I'm doubting that the main point of the ME franchise is customization or even one of the main points.

I disagree on that... still come to think of it, the mainr eason I bought it was due to the cuztomization so it might just be my own personal view not a general accepted one.

Exactly. While I love making characters there's just no analogue for Sheploo for females or even when trying to make another male (but you still have the option to be Sheploo). Default femShep is just slightly altered pre-existing parts, Sheploo is a completely unique model. That they didn't bother to make a more detailed face for her pretty much confirms that they're not as invested, if the marketing already didn't.
And even though beard!Hawke is being used as the posterchild, femHawke does at least seem to be getting more exposure. Not ideal, but definitely better than the hand femShep was dealt.
