*stolen from the FemHawke thread*

I think the writer is missing the point.  He-Hawke is iconic in the same way Mikey Mouse, Ronald McDonald and Clippy is iconic, same thing goes for DudeShep.  I don't think that Jesse Houston is saying that He-Hawke is more iconic than Lady Hawke at all.  He is just their logo for better or for worse.  Also note that Houston said that femShep was the fan favorite. So think of it this way, while He-Hawke and DudeShep are out there whoring for BW, femShep and LadyHawke are being lavished w/ fan art and fanfic because they are the fan favorites and the true stars of the game.

this. so well said. :wizard:

Of course, and I don't think that Jesse Houston is attempting to undermine FemShep or LadyHawke at all.

What irritates me is that fact that BioWare have missed to opportunity to use FemShep as their "icon," and create a memorable and interesting female protagonist that will become synonymous with the Mass Effect IP. It's so rare to see strong, independant women in a sci-fi military setting, and the wasted potential of using FemShep is what I find frustrating.

BioWare decided to play it safe, and that's disappointing.

Wow Yuki, Adele has a perfect profile! It always drives me nuts trying to get a realistic one. Image IPB

I really dislike the fact that they used Sheploo for marketing as well. I never even played ME1 until a few months before ME2 came out, when I came across a video of FemShep. I was like wtf, you can make your own char?!

Thanks! Profiles drive me insane, I'm glad I finally managed to make a character with a nice one. A bad profile is usually why most of my Shepards get deleted, since we can't really check them out properly in the CC.

Only reason I knew there was a female Shepard was because I spent time on the forums before playing the games (which I purchased in February only started playing  right at the beginning of November). It's never really mentioned in reviews or on game sites that you can play as a different sex.

The industry is a scary place remember.  If they did'nt sell the millions they needed then there wouldn't have been a Mass Effect 2.  You have to remember that ME was an IP that still needed to sell.  Thats why I accept Sheploo to some degree as a recognisable face. Even if I still think it was a bad idea for a RPG.

For ME2 they could have and should have changed their marketing strategy. This didn't happen and in fact got worse. Femshep had some appearances for Mass Effect to at least show she was there.    The only time we saw femshep before ME2 was literally about two weeks before release with three screenshots.  It was pretty pathetic.

I agree - I nearly didn't pick ME 1 and 2 up because I wasn't even aware that you could play as FemShep. That would have been a shame because ME1 is my favourite game so far.

I'm a bit late to party with this one but it seemed to fit and I couldn't resist.

Ceri Shepard has spotted 'marketing'. Time to a have a 'friendly word' with them about who's 'iconic' and who isn't:

I finally got my new Shepard in to ME2 today after finishing up her ME1 playthrough, so to celebrate, a few pics.

No real details behind her as yet. Her name is Silmeria, (like all my Shepards the name's stolen from the Valkyrie Profile games) she's an Infiltrator and is a bit of a goody two shoes, full on Paragon. Infact she only had 6 renegade points when I opened the ME2 save in gibbed to remove the scars. [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/angel.png[/smilie]

I also finally got around to adding some extra casual outfits, so she doesn't have to strut around the Normandy plastered in Cerberus logos. I got the details on how to add them from Sage's blog, so thanks to her for posting the info. :wizard:

Sorry Akari, I usually miss posts when I see Noah :innocent:

Silmeria looks amazing!  Unique name too which is always a major bonus!  Her armour stands out too!  My cannon femshep went into ME2 full paragon too (I think the only reason you get 6 renegade points is because of the Conrad Verner bug).   However some decisions in ME2 even if I felt were right went under renegade. Made a change from ME always blue approach.

Make sure to post some updates, I want to see if you can keep her 100% paragon!  :)

I almost did the same thing because of the marketing focus on Sheploo.

Well, at least they acknowledged that FemShep is popular. And she'll always be iconic to me, and to anyone else that chooses to elevate her as such.

We could always toss that guy to Moira...I'm sure they'd get along...

it is.

though, i'm not really surprised. part of the problem is that the average gamer is not interested in playing femshep. i mean, really, you know who the average gamer is, it's not the people on this thread, and their gaming choices - as evidenced by "stats" - are pretty baffling to me.

then again, that could change if femshep got some play.

okay, here's a question for you: do you think part of the problem with femshep's appeal is the default face?

sheploo IS pretty iconic. he's got that "i'm hot but tough" sort of design that clearly went into him. no offense to default femshep, but she always struck me as a design afterthought. a lot of the male players out there play sheploo. most femshep players make a custom. interestingly, i think i see more "custom" femsheps of a particular design - modded off the default femshep but with very similar tweaks - than i ever do see default femshep.

anyhow, i think default femshep didn't have much design thought put into her and i hope femhawke does. seems like she does.

I'm a guy, and I prefer FemShep, just because she's not the cover character.

Heck, I think that if she was the cover character, the appearance choices for her would feature a lot more fanservice.

I don't know.  They certainly didn't spend the money on her like they did w/ Sheploo.  Incidentally, default LadyHawke will NOT be customizable.  She is a premade “iconic figure” just like He-Hawke.  I didn’t buy ME1 for nearly 2 years because I didn’t know the guy on the box was customizable at all.  I kept looking at him and it was like, this guy looks like a wuss.  I’m not playing him.  God, I’m rambling.  To get to the point, I don’t think it mattered that much.  Certainly if the default femShep had looked like Laura Croft, then perhaps more would have played her, but most people play as themselves, especially the “pew, pew, pew” crowd.  So the stats for her may have risen slightly, but how many here would want to play a Miranda-esque femShep?

So, it might have had some impact, but I’m glad femShep is who she is.  She looks like a regular woman.  Regular woman are hot too … if no one minds me saying.

But I agree though, FemShep is and always will be iconic for me as well.
I picked up ME to give it a try, when I knew I could play as a famale, I went crazy for it. I can play games where your a guy, just I love the bad*ss women.

Yeah, this is a reason to be grateful she's the fan favorite rather than the poster child. The fans treat her a lot better than marketing would, I'm certain. Lingerie femShep ad campaign, anyone? Lolsob.

Commander Shepard does not only posses a DD - cup and runs around in a laze thong. She can also kill Reapers, with her boobs.

Honestly, we should be happy George Lucas isn't writing the female Commander Shepard.

No kidding, otherwise we could look forward to Mass Effect: Beach Volleyball. Bet Femshep would be marketed then. <_<
