Well, here are the first two in my series of "Noir" inspired manips of my favorite FemSheps from the 1930's and 40's.

ELE08's Rhona Shepard...with her new 1941 Lincoln Continental:

Image IPB

Sagequeen's Kyrie Shepard...with her Anderson K-5 monoplane "The Normandy Special" ...Circa 1939

Thank you kindly to both ELE and Sage for the photos!

I have 5 or 6 more in the works, so stay tuned!

I love your Noir pictures, Mr! Kyrie looks especially stunning - she has that whole "cold blonde" thing going for her, much like Marlene Dietrich. Keep up the good work!

Nice work people, quite a few of the posts from the last couple of pages have had me chuckling like an idiot to myself.

Silmeria looks wonderful, Akari. Great work in designing her!

Silmeria looks amazing!  Unique name too which is always a major bonus! Her armour stands out too! ;My cannon femshep went into ME2 full paragon too (I think the only reason you get 6 renegade points is because of the Conrad Verner bug). However some decisions in ME2 even if I felt were right went under renegade. Made a change from ME always blue approach.

Make sure to post some updates, I want to see if you can keep her 100% paragon! :)

Thanks for the compliments. :)

I can take no credit for the name though. As I said I just nicked it from the Valkyrie Profile games, same with my other Shepards. All three are named after the Valkyries from those games.
/is terrible at coming up with names for characters. :(

And I shall let you know if she goes a bit dark side, Captain.:innocent:

sagequeen wrote...

okay, here's a question for you: do you think part of the problem with femshep's appeal is the default face?

I don't think the problem is the default Jane Shepard, I think it's down to the fact a lot of people aren't even aware you can make a female Shepard. That and the  games are predominantly played by and marketed at males, a lot of whom will just play the game once as a soldier with the default menshep and who will think playing as a female character some how makes then less manly, or that it makes them look gay. The logic of the latter simply baffles me!

As others have said, if she was the poster girl for the games she would more than likely have ended up looking like Lara Croft or one of the DOA girls, rather than the normal looking, kick arse femshep that we have.

Nicely done Mr.V. Though I'm definitely calling shenanigans on your "lacklustre photoshop skills" comment from a few pages ago. Someone's a bit modest me thinks! ;)

Not much to say, but about the title of the thread, I think that it would be a bit stupid of Bioware to pay Vanderloo money for his face and not have it in trailers and covers.

By that logic playing Tomb Rider games is gay, Metroid Prime is gay, No One Lives Forever is gay, Mirror's Edge is gay etc etc =]

I don't really get why everyone is su upset right, why can't people just live with the the things that they are giving, seriously i mean, we can all start crying that Female Shepard is not iconic for marketing purposes, But we knew this from day 1 and we had no problems with it back then.

It is not so much the iconic remark that has people here vexed but the ensuing consequences that amount because of it. Femshep not having separate movement animations or merely slightly tweaked alternations of Sheploo, is a prime indication of the aforementioned. Granted, in Sheploo's defense the walk animations on both genders are downright awful, especially when held in comparison to its predecessor.

Furthermore, the lack of mention of Femshep's existence is something to derive ire from. Were one of the developers to use Femshep for a single in-game example of gameplay and offer this to Gamespot. It would expose her to the world in a cost efficient manner.

sagequeen wrote...

Frankly, yes and for a multitude of reasons. Phaedon is correct in his assessment for one. Vanderloo would have cost a large sum of money to model for the enormous amount of face work and animations necessary. Thus, I certainly would not hold fault upon BioWare for making the most of their investment. The default Femshep is generic and relatively plain, albeit such is a subjective opinion. Regardless, it is less ideal for marketing purposes. Were she modeled after Milla Jovovich or Kate Beckinsale, we would not be having this discussion.

In the grand scheme of things, it all amounts to the almighty dollar and statistical probability. People have a tendency life vicariously through their game avatar and envision themselves. The greater abundance of the gaming audience is male and they hired a model for the male role. Therefore, Sheploo is the default marketing tool.

Ok, I have no much time,so I will be brief; @Phaedon the title of the thread hits the nail on the head and it is ridiculous the question of money. More money Bioware loss if all of us decide not buy the ME3. No more.

More money Bioware loss if all of us decide not buy the ME3.

That might or might not be true. How many people would actually not buy Mass Effect 3 at all because of promotional material only featuring male!Shepard?

female!Shepard may be the "fan favourite" - but who decided that? One could probably look at the data and, with clever partitioning of the data, simultaneously conclude that male!Shepard is more popular AND that female!Shepard is more popular (see e,g, this article in the journal of clinical oncology for an illustration). Or are supporters of female!Shepard merely more vocal? Do you count the proportion of male!Shepards to female!Shepards, the proportion of people who prefer male!Shepard to the those who prefer female!Shepard or something else? Why is the statistic you measure correct and any other wrong? How do you compensate for sample bias?

In any case, marketing will have had to make a decision of whether to feature male!Shepard exclusively, female!Shepard exclusively or something in between when they started promoting ME1. They can't change that now since it will certainly confuse players ("Who is that women? I thought this was about Shepard?"), and I don't think we can blame marketing for featuring male!Shepard exclusively in promotional material if their OR people have concluded that this is the most effective form of advertising (and that this will also cover for any losses due to boycotts).

It is unfortunate that ME2 female!Shepard gameplay appeared to suffer compared to male!Shepard; I don't think that this the fault of the marketing department though. This is a more general problem though - unlike most other goods, software does not have to be fit for purpose and of satisfactory quality.

Heh, funny you should say that. Just finished my fourth playthrough of Bayonetta and shes gotta be my second favourite video game women after FemShep. The whole game is pretty tongue in cheek and I always feel like Bayonetta herself is laughing at all the other over-sexualised characters; even though that design has been given to her as well, unlike everyone else she isn't either girly or cold.

FemShep does this too* but without the hair-outfit. (*Unless you play super-cold renegade constantly )

Her head seems small cause in most games they give 'dem babes massive anime features and bobblehead things. Compared to her shoulders and waist I would have thought it'd be normal sized for a la- erh, killing witch shooting folk with her shoes.

Edit- Yeah though, her design is pretty silly but I still like her as a character. Kinda in a Liz Hurley in Bedazzled kinda of approach to womanhood; awesome looking but can swing the whole scary as hell bat too,

It was her disproportionate legs that I would attract that picture to. They are practically as long as I am tall and I am 6'4". It was... strange, so to speak. Of course this is all cosmetic and has no bearing on her character.

But her head is smaller than her boobs!  Lol, chalk it up to a design decision.  No one ever complains about Marcus Fenix having a tree trunk for a neck.

Femshep and marketing.  Me thinks people are missing the point.  Sheploo is the face of Mass Effect, that's not going to change and most people realize that, I think.  That ship has sailed as far as I'm concerned, for whatever reason they had in the development of ME1 they decided to use Vanderloo as their detailed-head model poster boy.  I'm still going to complain about it, because I don't like it, and along with other things it sets a precedent for future Bioware games.  This is a forum, yes?  Where we voice our opinions?  Even if we know things are not going to change in the immediate future.  I don't know if we're seeing more femHawke because of fan demand, but I do know nothing ever changes from keeping quiet.

The OP sums things up nicely:  We know Sheploo is the face of Mass Effect.
But there are things the devs can do to make a better experience for players who choose to use the female option
-equal attention paid to animations, bugs, clipping
-screenshots of how DLC armor will look on the female model
-possibly some teaser related items for the fans posted on the website, early screens, wallpaper

This is most likely stuff that only people who are already fans of the game will be checking out - so why limit it to male Shepard?  And anyone checking out the website who hasn't played the game might go, hey, that's interesting - you can play as someone besides the cover-dude.

And all this talk of who is the fan favorite, or who is more popular is not only not constructive, it's besides the point.  Bioware made a protagonist who can be either gender.  Outside of Sheploo related marketing, one shouldn't overshadow the other.  Both characters were put in the game, both have exceptional VA (personal opinion not withstanding) and they should be given equal treatment.

Love the photoshops, Mr.V!
