@Aislinn: I like the sound of both options, so how about we do a quick overview of her personality to help narrow it down?
Let's start with her name; Deandra. Her first name is a variant of the Celtic/Gaelic name
"Deirdra", which means “sorrowful” or “wanderer”. I didn't pick that just because it sounds good (though it was a factor

); she's got some serious emotional scars. That's kind of a given for Mindoir survivors, after all, but seeing members of her family tortured and killed before her very eyes has a lasting impact.
Deandra has a
lot of built up rage and hatred locked away inside of her, waiting to get out the moment she finally goes completely over the edge. Over the course of her life she had everyone she had ever loved get violently torn away from her, leaving her alone in the galaxy, and predictably that's hardened her. She's developed a "the end justifies the means" outlook on conducting herself, not being afraid to cut any and all corners nessessary to reach her goal. In a way she's still trying to make the galaxy a better place, but she doesn't care who has to suffer for her to get the job done. The greater good comes first.
The big angle of how I'm trying to develop her as a character is her outright
resentment of Morgan Shepard for what she's become. The two women met right after the Mindoir raid with they were both sixteen (Morgan was with her mother aboard the SSV Einstein at the time), they both enlisted at eighteen and went through basic together and even ended up in the same unit. Elysium and the Blitz was the turning point. Both fought hard and ultimately survived, but because Morgan was in the right place at the right time she was the one the Alliance chose to elevate as "The Hero of the Blitz". As the remnants of their unit were split up and reassigned and Morgan was brought into the N7 program Deandra was left to continue to rise up the ranks on her own volition, eventually reaching N7 status herself before botching the Torfan operation and being dishonerably discharged.
Deandra has come to hate her old friend for stealing what she thinks was meant to be
her life (and I'm treating my playthroughs with her as an "alternate universe" where Morgan died/Deandra was the Blitz's hero). In my mind she's become an outright anti-batarian speciesist and a violent extremist, everything she's both lost and had taken from her further fueling her drive and barely controlled emotions. She's a powderkeg, and there's no telling what will set her off.
... I'm leaning towards making her a Vanguard after writing all of that...
