@LesEnfants

I like your dark-haired FemShep. Her name is Rachel, isn't it? Forgive me if I've forgotten...sometimes I'm bad about that. She has a uniqueness to her. I especially like her eyes and nose.

Haha! You're close, but Rachel is my friend jlb's Shepard. My Shepard is named Kate. No need to apologise, as it's easy to confuse names. ;)

Thanks for the compliments! Of your Shepards, I think that Moira is the most distinctive in terms of facial features. She's also quite pretty, which is something of a contrast to her ruthless attitude!

You guys have some really pretty Sheps... Do you feel that it adds something to your gameplay to have a pretty Shep? I deliberately made mine to have some flaws. Attractive, I think, but human. And I see many which look - forgive me, this is not meant to be an insult - but so perfect they almost look like dolls. What's the appeal? Particularly for female players, doesn't it irk you a little to have people's first impression of your gameplay be "she's pretty" or "she's not"?

It DOES irk me when someone's first reaction to any Shepard is "She's pretty" or "Wow that Shep is ugly", especially the latter (since "pretty" is a compliment I can live with, lol).  This happens in any kind of game where you custom-make your character.  Especially when they use it as an excuse to be dismissive or rude.

I aim to make pretty Sheps, because I am just not skilled with the character creator.  It's relatively easy to make a "pretty" Shep and really doesn't require that much tweaking if you don't want to.  To make a Shep that is "flawed" but attractive while still having normal human facial proportions?  That takes a skill that I don't have, so most of my FemSheps end up being pretty generic beauties.

I tried to play around with Delta a bit and think I made some progress towards something unique (bottom right).

That is a wonderful portrait. Although I have already complimented the artist on their work in the dedicated thread, I think it's worthwhile to reiterate it here. : )

I'm almost certain that some people think my characters are ugly, though.

I feel that way sometimes too, especially when someone actually said Kallen wasn't a femshep because of me letting her have Renegade scars, but I didn't care because Kallen could kick their butt anyway, plus Liara wouldn't think any femshep was uglyImage IPBImage IPB

It's all down to personal preference. What one person thinks is attractive someone else may think looks plain. I made my Shepard's to appeal to me, and If someone makes a positive comment about one of them then that's nice, but if someone says they look ugly, I'm not gonna get upset over it.

I've never purposely tried to make them looked flawed, (unless you count ME1's scars) if I did it would probably just look like I went mental with the sliders, and made certain features look out of proportion or bizarre. I'm not the most skilled person with the CC and I tend to use the same noses, eyes, etc, on my characters because I can't make the others work. But other people have made really good Shepard's using those options I can't. At the end of the day it's your character and if you're happy with them, that's all that matters.

I prefer to go the aesthetically pleasing route mainly because games really don't to the "flawed" feature very well. My problem with people who do this is generally that they are trading one unrealistic design philosophy for another equally unrealistic design philosophy. Those flaws are almost never added in a convincing or well blended manner it's mostly just something added after the fact. I could make my characters exactly the same way with aesthetically balanced faces, then just give them a hook nose and say, "Well now she's flawed and therefore more realistic, I have avoided making her a doll". However that's not really convincing and the animation system just fights you the whole time.

So the added benefit of making a "pretty" Shepard is that they simply work better on a technical level and are much more interesting to look at in the game. Until the technology gets better and less restricting focusing more a asymmetrical face generation as opposed to symmetrical systems then you're not really ever going to get a convincing effect.

Just my experience with character creators over the course of many games and many years.

Kallen is quite a good FemShep, AD. And so is Kate, Les. Each FemShep is unique. Image IPB
I know how that feels, though. I'm sure some people think mine aren't all that pretty and are fairly ugly...but I don't mind. People each like different things. However it bothers me when, for example, Lia is called irritating and that person won't tell me why they think that.....Image IPB
Anyhow I think you all make such wonderful FemSheps. They have depth and looks and everything else! Nice job to you all!Image IPB

Personally, I'd have switched Jacobs face with Jordy.  The whole cybernetic implant on his face would have looked pretty cool.

Doh!  Sorry about that.  Thanks for the kind words.

When I designed Moira I wanted her to have this sort of cold edge.  Beautiful, yet slightly intimidating at the same time.  Don't know if I succeeded in that or not.

Moira is also incredibly vain.  She takes a lot of care to make herself look good, even when saving the galaxy.

Here, have a Constance/Liara pic to make up for it:

Well I think it's neat that despite wanting to create aesthetically pleasing Sheps there are such a wide variety of looks here, and they seldom look generic or doll-like. That probably says something positive about the perception of beauty that I'm not articulate enough to spell out, but it's still pretty awesome.
