I have a question for all of you. What do you consider when naming your Shepards?

Here's my newest Femshep. Paragade Infiltrator, kind of a lovable rogue the way I see her, though it's remarkable how much a playthrough can help shape a character. Aaand...I'm having trouble coming up with a name for her. I know I want something that sounds a little tomboyish and unique.

What I do is make a list of names I like and say "Commander [Name] Shepard" out loud.  If I find one with a nice ring to it, I keep it.  I usually build my Shep around the sound of the name.

Going backwards is harder.  Looking at your pics, she kind of reminds me of Madeline Khan.  I'd use Madeline as a starting point. then kind of free-associate with names for a while. (Madeline... Madison?  Adelie?  Adriana?  Diana?)  When you hit the right one, it'll "click."

And then when you run out of ideas, name her after the first thing that comes to mind.  Hence why my renegade adept is named HotWings.

EDIT: Top of the page?  Again?

Heh heh.  Funnily enough, that crossed my mind too! :D  And yeah, Cheez always seems to have a funny pic statshed away!  Where are my parachute trousers?

As for Shepard names (both sexes); I usually go with the name that first pops into my head when I look at the character head/face I've just created.  She kinda reminds me of my friend Katie, but more disturbingly looks like an ex of mine!

And now something I like to call: 'Draw Mistah!'

I always try to pick something that fits in with what has been established about that character.  If we know about their family, for example, I'll pick names that fit with them.  For example, in Dragon Age 2 I will give my PCs names that fit well with Hawke's family.  Sure, there are parents out there who would name their kids "Carver, Bethany, and Emlawaganskorn", but more likely you'd see names similar to "Carver" and "Bethany" for your Hawke.  That's just personal preference, of course.  ;)

For Shepard, we don't have much indication beyond the last name and I do pick names that I think sound nice with Shepard.  Mostly, though, I go for names that I think fit well with my idea of Shepard.  I've been drawn to names that are feminine but also short... most of them also go by nicknames, something that I could imagine being yelled in a fight.

Another big thing with my Shepards is "normal" names.  Nothing fantastical or even very sci-fi, because I want the name to fit with how I picture her:  a normal person.  Who does extraordinary things, yes, but still a normal woman underneath it all.

That's why my Shepards are:  Kate, Liz, Tess, Sadie, Evie, Jennie, Delta

I do this too.  I usually have a general idea of what I'm going for and then I just browse until I find something that seems to fit.  Colonist - I usually go more traditional, your Janes Joes and Bobs.  Earthborn - something less common because their parents aren't around.  I like more tomboyish names for earthborns as well, usually a nickname or shortened version of something else.  I actually really hate trying to think of names because I end up blanking 95% of the time.

I blanked on a few of my Shepard's names as well.  Moira and MacKenzie specifically.  Don't ask me how I managed to come up with them in the end.  Probably browsing through baby names.

Obviously, I like to go for irish names.  It's a part of my real life heritage that I'm proud of.  Aislinn or Trista are names I use quite often in RPGs, which is why they are mashed together as my forum name.

^_^

Those two names also have personalities and looks that follow them from game to game.  Aislinn has always been a cute redhead with blue eyes, while Trista has always had black hair and green eyes.  That explains those two characters, anyway.  Aislinn is always some sort of caster (so she became an Adept) and Trista a warrior-type (Soldier).

When I designed Constance, I wanted to make this hardened and b*dass blonde with the most pretentious name I could think of.  For some reason that name came to mind, and I think it suits her perfectly.

I had trouble thinking up a name for Moira, so I believe I browsed lists until I saw something I liked.  Same with MacKenzie, though I intentionally wanted to give her something more tomboyish and cute.

The VERY first time I played ME1, I felt the urge to make a FemShep that was basically an extension of myself.  That's where Holly came from.  She shares my name, my looks (as close as I can get in the CC) and some of my personality.  She's my original, canon and my favorite of all my FemSheps.

Nice question-

Amanda Renee, ususally just Renee, I got from a good friend of mine and one that just sounded about right. Plus, I was enjoying having easy access to the accented characters on the 360 keyboard. (sheepish look)

Nimue is named for the heroine/hero of David Weber's Safehold series. She's the personality of a long-dead military officer with a robot body who's trying to save humanity's last colony against a totalitarian violently Luddite religion and a race of omnicidal aliens.

@thomp

I like the name Nimue.  Isn't it one of the names for the "Lady of the Lake" in Arthurian legend?  Or the woman that supposedly brought about Merlin's end?

A little Thane and Holly to cheer me up. I really like the second one because her eyes look so crazy blue.

Yeah, Nimue is the Lady of the Lake, in some version anyway... There's as many Arthurian variations as there are Bible editions...

And having thought about it, part of my decision is based on something similar to leggywillow, as I try for ordinary names too, nothing too futuristic.

Nimue is both Merlin's lover who traps him in a cave (in White's The Once and Future King, Merlin sees this as good) and the Lady of the Lake, depending on who tells the story.

Edit and addition:  The idea of a nurse at an orphanage giving the children names based on a theme came from John Irving's The Cider House Rules.  It's one of the few times I'll say I've read that book.

With my ME1 and 2 femgineer, I named her Alexandria.  I think the name is appealing and feminine but like the city in Egypt, she's named for one of the greatest military minds in history (Alexander the Great) which to me inspires intelligence and strength.  I gave her red hair and green eyes as those are among the most beautiful physical traits a woman can have IMO.

Others aren't so inspired with their name choices.  One of my femsheps is named Cristina as I modeled her after one of my favorite singers, Cristina Scabbia of Lacuna Coil.  She's beautiful and talented but nothing inspired by military greatness or anything like with Alexandria.

Big fan of the redheaded FemSheps!

This is Jane Shepard, Infiltrator (Mostly Paragon, although ME2 added some _really_ good Renegade content, especially the interrupts).

Image IPB

Finding a good name for a FemShep is hard (I am a guy in real life, so I have to try and come up with something that is not too uncomfortable). I've enjoyed playing badasses such as Dr. Gordon Freeman and Solid Snake, but after a while, it gets a bit boring playing the same macho man hero. I really like how the Mass Effect series has some female characters who aren't just sex appeal (FemShep is very good about this, I think. At least, I'm not getting a blatant sexual vibe off her, a la lara croft, although some of the ME2 armors are a bit... risque). Playing as FemShep has been a really interesting experience (Plus, I get to spend the game listening to Jennifer Hale!).

That, and hey, girls with huge sniper rifles is a big thumbs up in my book.

Was pretty proud of this run. Want to take better pictures, but can only do so much with my Blackberry.

LOL!  I  kind of regret playing my infiltrator as a maleshep.  At least my Claymore shotgun totting Vanguard is a Femshep.

That said, the Mattock on my femgineer is quite satisfying.  The sound all the Firepower pack weapons have is very powerful, as is the damage they inflict.

The Mattock is very well-used among my FemSheps, haha. It's such a great rifle. The Phalanx is also quite the pistol. Shot for shot the most powerful. I tend to like the Claymore or Scimitar for a shotgun, though. Geth Shotgun just doesn't have the satisfying kick, I guess.

@yakko

Thanks for the compliment!  I tried to give her the most intense blue eyes in the CC.

There's just something about the look on FemShep's face as she cycles the heatsink out of the Widow that evokes very powerful feelings deep inside my subconscious. Her short, red hair, the tomboyish features...

What was I saying?

The nuke launcher strapped to her back...

Ack! Focus!

I could not play MaleShep in ME1. The codpiece on the N7 armor. It was GIGANTIC. I lived in constant terror that enemies would shooting poor ManShep in the 'daddybags' (this is a VERY, VERY big concern as a guy).

I do admit Holly looks pretty damn awesome when she ejects a thermal clip out of the widow. =-)

It's my absolute favorite gun in ME2.  I hope it makes a comeback in the next game.

What is that song from the movie Tank Girl?  "She walks softly, but she carries a big gun.."

I've never played an adept, so I thought I would create one just for the hell of it.  I don't like to think of my femSheps as throwaways, but this one has no ME1 import, so not sure if I will hold onto her or not.
