Pretty much this for me. I'm not Shepard I'm just playing through her story.
I find it relatively easy to distance myself from the character in an RPG, which I think stems from the fact I used to play a lot of JRPGs. The main character is always pre defined in those games and apart from the name you really have no input in to who they are or how they act. For example; Squall will always be a miserable, moody loner in Final Fantasy VIII, until you hit the point in the story where his personality changes.
Obviously Mass Effect isn't as simple as that because it's not a straight line to the finish and you have all the choices. Before I came up with a personality for my Shepard I would just make choices based on either gameplay benefits or what I fancied picking at the time. Actually coming up with a personality for a character was something completely alien to me, as I'd never had to do that before. The designers of whatever game I was playing had done all the hard work and all I had to do was ride the train to the end of the line.
Now that I've done the hard work though, I much prefer having my own Shepard that's unique to me rather than a pre defined character.

It took a while to get used to English. It has absolutely nothing in common with Finnish. But anyway...
I mean, what other language lets you say something like "there's no time like the present to present the present"?
english is crazy. it's all i really know, aside from a smattering of german and french and spanish, and it's an insane language, cobbled together by a crazy people. and american english is even worse, truly.
okay, all you people inspired me to try an alt shep. we'll see how this goes. so far, she's renegon, has no chemistry with kaidan, and i think will fall for liara. she's kyrie's cousin, in an alt universe where kyrie didn't survive mindoir. maybe will do a full profile later. for now she's a soldier, but she may turn into an engineer in me2. this will be a very quick run through me1.
and this is Nef Shepard

i think her eyes may be a little too wide-set, but otherwise i'm pleased with her looks. there's something off with my graphics settings, though. it's all low rez. but anyhow, that's the idea. mebbe i'll tweak her some more when i import.

Im in the same mind. My first couple of playthroughs were based on the decisions that were obvious to being either paragon or renegade. Doing a playthrough correct to my own moral standing is far more interesting. However when you create a character and develop a unique perspective for her the game takes on a whole new light. Actually creating a backstory and personality for Amelia was more work then I envisioned but the end result was great. Ok her stance is still mainly the "blue" option when available, but unlike my constantly pro-Alliance femsheps, I let her slide into the Council spectre role a bit more.
Oh and awesome screenshot! Wow at the black rift coming from Harbingers assault; It looks amazing! Havent seen it in so much detail! [smilie]http://social.bioware.com/images/forum/emoticons/happy.png[/smilie]

Go on, try spelling color with a 'u'. You never know you might like it?
Nice looking Shepard. She certainly looks like someone not to mess with. Oh and welcome to the wonderful world of multiple femsheps.

At least English has been freed from the tyrannies of gender. That's the worst part of languages like Spanish... when do you use female or male gender when talking about anything besides people? That always seemed mildly insane to me, assigning gender to genderless things.

About roleplaying: When I first started playing Mass Effect 1 I always put myself in Shep's shoes, so essentially I was playing as the Commander Shepard version of myself. I still changed appearance like a million times (big surprise) but it was always essentially the same paragon character.
Not until later did I try out the renegade options for fun, and it was only through disconnecting myself from the character that I could just enjoy it for what it is and not cringe. I am so supernonconfrontational in real life.
Now, especially after Mass Effect 2 I see Shep as her own character. Fleshing out her backstory and giving her motivations for her decisions in-game has really reinforced this and added a lot to my enjoyment. There is still a certain amount of escapism, but really no different than reading a book or watching a movie and seeing it through the eyes of the main character.
Screenshots, have some:

It's certainly a crazy world. FemSheps require lots of attention, after all. I have a flippin' menagerie of them; sometimes it's hard to keep track. ::calls FemSheps:: Feeding time, everyone!

Find a key decision point in the game. Then ask yourself: are you deciding what to do, or are you deciding what your FemShep would do?

Yeah that never made sense to me either. I learned French at school and when someone starts telling you a pen is masculine and a pencil is feminine, it really throws you for six!
Anyway getting back on topic. I got a new monitor today that can do 1920*1080, so have some screenshots.

1. Jane Proudfoot (The Spirits Within)
Character wise, she is close to what I imagined Noah to be. Direct, proud, fueled by her beliefs and a short fuse.
2. Rachel Weisz as Detective Angela Dodson (Constantine)
Tough + determined + capable + pixie looks =
3. Alexis Bledel as Becky (Sin City)
It's pretty obvious why, I think.

That's how I play mine too, but I find with a voice over and only a certain amount of dialogue that's only parttially true. FemShep is a lot more defined then a totally made up RP character and I do like that. While I do sort of put myself in her shoes, there are very much hers and never mine.

it is, heh. but i liked it, so i'm stealing it. full name, nefertiri shepard. dad's family is egyptian and he gave her the name. long story there. she's sort of my alternative version of kyrie, but not a polar opposite. more like, a different take on what could have happend with shep. anyhoo.
love the character thing chig! very nice!
@ ele - thanks re: the eyes. they are the same color as kyrie's original eyes - before they got replaced after mindoir. if she had lived, that is. eh, yeah.
re: roleplaying - since kyrie and i share certain ethical metrics, there are times that those two melded for me in her playthrough. the geth decision was one where *i* say, blow the d*mn base. wasn't sure if kyrie would agree, but in the end, i think she did. but the way she talks to people is all her own. nef is a total utilitarian who holds life very cheaply and is convinced she will die young. so her decisions are her own.

Haha! Nice! We both put Alexis Bledel as influences for our FemSheps. =-)
@Sage
Mmmmm, yes. Thane's chest... oh wait, where was I? I got distracted there for a minute.
@ELE
Holly is basically me in Shepard's shoes (plus more), but I have my other Shepards so I can be more of an observer. I love shaping their personalities, and for some reason they tend to take on a life of their own which is really cool.
I actually kind of dreaded playing Moira, because I thought I wouldn't enjoy playing a more renegade character. I love her now, as she's more of a Renegon and I can tailor her choices to what I want (via modding points). I have a fondness for all of my Sheps.
So, I can do that escapism thing with Holly or watch a story unfold with someone else. And that's why I love ME. =-)

It's an interesting sort of thing. When I was younger, I used to imagine the main character as myself in RPGs; a self-projection of my ideal, basically. So I'd try to model the character how I wanted to look, etc. I suspect a lot of people live vicariously through game characters. On this basis, a male playing a female seems, well, strange, as you put it, because if you are the main character, what does that imply?lastpatriot wrote...
Here are a few shots of my FemShep even though I still feel a bit "strange" playing a female character.
I find different genres attract the this group more. Try mentioning that you (as a male) play a female Spartan in Halo Reach on the forums and prepare for an influx of... well, I think 'immaturity' is the kindest word.
I stopped thinking that way as I got older, for whatever reason. I tend to think of main characters in their own right, designing them to appeal to me rather than to be me. I guess you could, in a cynical sense, say I've become more voyeuristic. Also, most of the time I feel like female characters make the narrative a little more compelling, even if it's solely because they're more the exception from the norm.
Of course, ME2 adds the VA issue into the mix, which tends to brush all these philosophical concerns aside if there's a big difference. I haven't been into the ManShep thread, but I assume that IAA award the title talks about is short for "I Ain't Acting".
Or a "Choose Your Own Adventure" book.
They still have those, right? I had a bunch of them when I was younger...
If yes, go to page 4.
If no, go to page 17.
If you have no idea what I'm talking about, go to page 42.
Edit: Ah yes, English. The language that mugs other languages in dark alleys and sifts through their pockets for loose grammar.
