Wondering about Alignment in both games. Can I walk around stealing things, spitting on children, and otherwise obscene acts with out lossing a Lawful Good alignment?
Alignment shift?

You can... but your reputation will fall... and if it falls enough, and if you are a paladin or ranger, you'll lose your powers. As for alignment switch, not even killing children will change that...

Will evil party members have a problem with high reputation then?

-Yup. They will leave if you reach 18 (19?).
-Some certain actions in BG2 can change alignment.
-You can also change alignment of two NPCs in ToB and one in SoA.

Evil party members leave the party if your reputation goes above 18. Neutral party members leave if your reputation hits 1 and good party members leave if your reputation goes below 3. Your actions can change your alignment at a certain point in BG2.

Hmm... I was planing on picking up Viconia because of her role in both games. Is she going to flip a **** and run out on me if I'm too nice to people?

Yes. As always (almost), there are mods. (The BG1 equivalent.)

That's a disappointment. I kind of like having a mix of a good and evil characters in my party. Not going to mess with any mods (other than BGT) on my first play through. Thanks anyway.

Well, you can take the enlightened approach: killing innocents when your reputation gets too high.
But for completeness' sake I mention that the BG1 NPC mod and b!tweaks have "bardic reputation adjustment" components that allow you to pay to have your reputation lowered.

It's possible to keep your reputation in the realm that's acceptable to everybody. Just take care that you don't only do good deeds.
Certain actions will reduce reputation by 1-2 points, killing innocents will usually have more drastic effects. In BG2, after reaching a certain point in the plot, you will be able to very easily control your reputation downwards without even hurting anybody (besides yourself).

It's not that hard to keep the reputation down though if you need to. In my group Montaron is always getting caught trying stealing and that lowers the reputation of my group by 1.
He just runs from the guards without killing anyone.
In BG2 it's even easier as H_Taifun mentioned.

Just so you know, having Viconia in your group (in BG2) automatically lowers your rep by 2 (if you let her go, your rep will jump by 2). So, it's much easier to keep things level with her around.
At least, that's the way I remember it (unmodded).

Meh, I normally try and make an attempt to keep a character as close to their alignment as possible (it is a role playing game after all) so running around knocking off a few people here and there to keep my rep low just doesn't seem right. I've pretty much given up on having an evil character or two in the party. I'll probably just go with the canon party, or something close to it. Not sure how much longer I can stand to have his druid in my party.

How much does a high charisma have influence here? Last time I played BG2, I had a reputation of 20 and Sarevok and Viconia never left (but complained A LOT). My <CHARNAME> had a reputation of 18 (later increased to 19).

Charisma has no effect at all, but NPCs do not leave during ToB.

Charisma does seem to have an impact on HOW they leave however.
I am thinking of Xzar and Montaron.
With high charisma, they leave taking the goodies with them, but with lower charisma, they fight.
(You get the goodies back!)

Xzar and Montaron left me without fighting and my charisma was 11 I believe. I wouldn't have been so pissed about it they didn't leave literally right after I had to run to a temple to res ****ty Xzar. Should have left the bastard dead.

That surprises me, but I take your word for it.
That has never happened to me with low charisma.
Mind you, I rarely have them in my party nowadays.

I think they might have left because I didn't go to the mine soon enough for them. My rep at the time was only 14 so idk.

So I had Viconia in my party for some after hitting 18 rep. At 19 she left but then instantly offered to return. The same thing happened after every addition rep point gained, as well as a few times randomly. Does this have something to do with a change in BGT? Or a bug perhaps?

The happy patch, part of a mod changes things, giving a variety of options. I think that it is pretty useful for making the game how YOU want it to be.

Besides the Happy Party mod, if you steal candy from orphans or turn into the Slayer once in a while, you can keep Vickie (or Edward or Korgan) from leaving because of party Rep=19 or 20. This for BG2, of course; is not a problem in ToB.
