If you have Shotgun and Assault Armor, you will be a true tank and great at close combat. You also have SMG (Locust) to take care of distant targets you cannot get to.

Totally depends on what kind of sentinel you are. What are you?

People like to hype up that locust don't they? Personally... I hate that thing.
Hype? Why? It is the best SMG for mid and long range combat. No hype needed.

At close range you get more damage from a tempest. As far as I can tell... the vindicator does better damage than the locust. I can understand the appeal if someone is choosing the claymore for a vanguard or the widow for an infiltrator... but I just find the vindicator is a superior weapon to the locust (personaly opionion though... which is all these debates boil down to).

And even more from Eviscerator. Yes, Vindicator is probably better than Locust, but not so much better that it would be better to take it over Shotgun or Sniper Rifle. Just my opinion anyways.

I prefer not to get that close with a sentinel... then again I'm not an experienced sentinel. I'm still working on my sentinel playthrough. I'm more of an adept and vanguard kind of person.

I sit back with a Locust in one hand and slapping people with Warp and Throw fields like a pimp to a ho. Something big pokes out and I introduce them to my little friend called the Incisor with Tungsten Ammo or a grenade to the face.

The Locust is nice but the Vindicator's better IMHO. It's nice to be able to do everything with 1 weapon. It's also fun to get up close with the shotgun. And either one works on Insanity.

True, but if you're a class that either fights at longer ranges or has something else to handle close combat, the Locust steams ahead. Hell, the Locust's DPS isn't even that far behind the Tempest, thanks to it's headshot-friendly characteristics.
Yeah, the Vindi is probably a superior weapon in terms of DPS. But the Viper is a superior weapon to the Vindi

I don't like to snipe. I like to fight medium range.

Without modding my game. I have a pistol locust and viper.
With modding my file, I have a Vindicator (lots of ammo), SMG, mantis.
So, if you use powers most than vanguard style punching, snipers.

That's a fair point. I guess the moral of the story isn't so much 'pick this weapon', but maintain a balance of guns that are weighted towards your preferences. A Carnifex/Tempest/Vindicator selection is a pretty balanced combo if you prefer med-range fighting.
I ended up plumping for the Locust because my Adept carries a Widow, Revenant and a Scimitar i.e. he's lacking a long range weapon that has some stamina in terms of ammo (the widow is a bloomin' howitzer, but with 13 shots, it doesn't last that long).
