I still remember fondly McClarens interviews when he was Twente manager when he put on a fake Dutch accent. They were cringe worthy. Did he try that stunt in Germany? Be even better if he did it Basil Fawlty style.

I think theres been a few managers in England who couldn't speak the language. I suspect they were all colossal failures. I vaguely remember a story about someone's translator giving the wrong instructions to his players on purpose.

I'm not sure about Trappatoni, I think he speaks very basic English. I think its alot like his Bayern days and he uses a translator. I know I've seen press conferences where he uses one to speak to the press.

Didn't Warnock suggest that he would also be a poor choice in the same article or did I read it wrong? Maybe I picked him up wrong. It would be quite the spectacle him as England manager. I'd say he knows he would never get it.

United were lucky to get a draw against Stoke last night. I once again noticed commentators with agenda's like trying to make out there was a huge problem with De Gea when he was actually doing well and going on and on about penalty claims for United when neither of them was really a clear cut penalty. One it looked like Woodgate just about touched the ball and thats after 12 replays, if the ref isn't sure then he can't give it. The other wasn't a handball. Bloody commentators.

From what I read Warnock covered all bases essentially. He reckons that Capello doesn't communicate with the players well, and doesn't get British humour; thus the next appointment has to be an Englishman. That the manager is capable of making their players play with a smile on their face like he has managed with Wright-Phillips. He does suggest that a lot of people would be against his appointment (50%), but on the flip side he would have the support of the other half. A very non-commital 'yeah I want the job' sort of piece; at least the peculiar way I was reading it anyway.

Managed to miss MOTD so I'll be relying on MOTD2 instead. Saw the results and was a touch surprised about the Man Utd game with Stoke. From what I read de Gea played really well in that game.

As for commentators...I suggest using the radio. A bit less waffle from my experience.

Ooo...a nervy finish to tonight's game at Carrow Road, with Norwich holding on for a 2-1 win over Sunderland. Chuffed. Hopefully we can keep up this sort of momentum throughout the rest of the season.

Also...seemingly a lot of injuries making the headlines....

Bah the radio has Alan Green, its like swapping a punch in the face for a kick in the balls.

Saw bits of the Norwich game, good result. Great cross for the second goal, I love a good cross. Bit unsurprising to see Vaughan injured again. He is almost Saha like from what I've seen of him.

United are missing 8 players tomorrow night so far. Seems to be a few injuries going around.

Hm...doesn't sound like it will be much of a pleasant change then. Ouch.

Must be some sort of weird psychic thing going around making players injured....

Interesting to see Warnock publicly criticise his own player. Wonder if that will work in the long run.

Did I hear something?.....

EDIT: looks like Ferguson has started a new debate concerning the running of the game. This should prove interesting.

Is Andy Gray still commenting the Barclays Matches, live? - fact: making fun of that female referee, annoyed England Football Management.

Hhmmm yes. America's public relations in full swing again.

Is this the thing about match times and tv OBaka?

Andy Gray was fired for making sexist comments about a female referee on air. If she stayed in the kitchen this wouldn't have happened... He was a knobhead anyway and a terrible commentator. I think he hosts a radio show now and has been replaced by Gary Neville who is much better.

Yeah, it is. Just wondering who else will wade into the debate amongst those in the game. I see Wenger has added his opinion to it.

If memory serves it wasn't just the comment about the female assistant ref (because linesman would be inappropriate....); he probably would have kept his job if it was just that after his apology. Thing is there was a further incident involving a female assistant in the studio where he made a comment (in jest it would seem though perhaps crude), and that made its way to the public; it was that off-air incident coupled with the on-air comment which damaged his image. At least that's how I remembered it.

Anyway, side issues aside...both Manchester teams in action tonight. Let's see how Man Utd do against Basle. Seems like Berbatov and Owen are on the bench; starting to look like it could be a long season for the both of them.

As an Arsenal fan, pretty poor start to the season, even worse when you see how utterly awesome ManUtd have been early this season!

gonna be a long year!

And, from 2-0 up against Basel, Utd let it slip to 2-2. Massive shock on the cards here - i wont lie, im enjoying this!

Half time scores favoured the red half of Manchester, and about a couple of minutes after the restart things started to look like the shape of a pear. Still a bit to go at time of writing.

Arsenal haven't begun the season well, and it could well be a long season for them. With Wilshere (one of them injuries going around) out for a reported five months...doesn't look particularly good. Probably would look to Ramsey to make that role his own.

Man City's players aren't really doing the job so far in this match. Hardly tracking back is what I'm hearing (Radio 5 Live). Commentators were making the point that top players track back to help their team, even Ronaldo at times (I anticipate that to be a shock); makes it sound like Man City have too many luxury players in the team.

EDIT: now a shape of a pear....

I like Ramsey, but so often he'll look fantastic against a poor team (see: against Bolton last weekend) and then be completely invisible against any time with a decent midfield. Its frustrating.

The obvious lacking is that we simply are not a fast team anymore, but Wenger still plays a style suited to fast players. That's when we get torn to pieces.

One of the more intriguing Champions League evenings - was not expecting Bayern to take apart Man City quite like this, impressive.

I thought Ramsey played well against England during the recent internationals....wait....England aren't exactly a good team, are they? He's still young though, and obviously fans would want him to be there at the top, but he'll be playing a while as yet.

Those days were when Wenger had a group of big, powerful athletic players at his disposal. Once that team was broken down he was unable to recreate a team to replace it. Actually, that would be a good topic: which managers are good team builders? Ferguson has to be up there given his consistent results over so many years. Any others?

Hm...Tevez is being stroppy again; refusing to play apparently. Engineering something already?

Ramsey was great against England actually, thats a good point.

The thing about Ferguson is that he adapts. He builds so many different teams and plays to their strengths. While Wenger did build an awesome team (an unbeatable team) when it broke apart, it's like he tried to just replace the players (badly) rather than adapt to a new team. Not sure if that made sense.

And i don't understand Tevez right now, if he is refusing to play, he surely isn't going to go anywhere until January? just causing trouble for himself.

It's been mentioned by different pundits that Ferguson is capable of building teams. Winning the league (let's ignore cup competitions as they aren't really a measure of consistency) so many times over so many years is quite an achievement. There certainly doesn't seem to be anyone comparable in the English game. The only manager who has stayed with a team longer is Dario Gradi as I understand it though I know nothing about his achievements so won't comment (yet, I'll see what I can find).

Crazy game at Old Trafford it would seem; just scored an equalizer.

Tevez is...well...we tend to have a laugh at him on this thread. I can sort of see where he's coming from if it is true, but it's certainly not the attitude of a professional though; in fact it's absolutely disgraceful. Mind you, Paulo di Canio, when he was at West Ham, never traveled to away games if memory serves.

EDIT: looks like Mancini has confirmed that Tevez refused to play.

Wait who the hell said Ronaldo tracks back? We had to play Rooney on the wing because Ronaldo wouldn't track back. Have they never watched Ronaldo play? Unless they mean the real Ronaldo.

I actually missed a bit of the United match, it was 2-0 then when I came back it was 2-2 and United couldn't keep the ball. It was a bit of a wake up call atleast, we haven't been as good as the media would have you believe. We were good against some teams who played very poorly and we got great results. We usually don't really get going until later in the season.

Arsenal have a fair few players to bed in and alot of injuries(as per usual). I still think they will finish in the top 4.

Ha Tevez. Souness went at him with both barrels calling him the scumbag he is. Apparently Mancini has said he is done and won't play for City again according to SSN but they don't seem to have backed it up with any quotes. It was only a matter of time, had any of us predicted this?

I don't think most managers get time to build teams these unless the team is mega rich.

That was a painful game. To be 2-0 up and to get a 3-3 draw with a late goal.  Not good at all.  Attacking we looked sharp as normal.  But our defence was poor all game.  We were fortunate to be 2-0 up at half time!!

Having focused my attention on the United game (as im a United supporter)  I was shocked to to see the latest developments from down the road.  I know Tevez is unhappy but to refuse to play!  Wow!

United didn't really flow when attacking tonight it just didn't click, I thought. Nani's cross for the equaliser was fantastic though. We didn't seem to be in control like we usually are. Hopefully its a wake up call and it stops the youngsters from getting carried away. I'd rather it happened now than later on.

Tevez actually gave an interview after the match through an interpreter ofcourse going on about family reasons again and claiming to be professional the whole time he was there. Really? What the hell is his definition of professional? He has done nothing but rock the boat and speak out. He hasn't even learned the bloody language after 4 years. You'd think as a professional that would be one of the first things he would do.

Listening to the radio the match was the Bayern Munich-Man City match mainly with bits from Man Utd-Basel. Good point there though, Druss. They only said 'Ronaldo' so it is somewhat ambiguous, or they could really mean Cristiano Ronaldo....

The second half of Utd's match was unbelieveable really. Basel scoring twice in as many minutes. The commentators (didn't pay attention to who) mentioned that while Phil Jones has been good going forward, this game has shown he's still a ways away from being the defender he is expected to become. Ferdinand's own recent injury was probably also an issue.

Tevez and family reasons. Again? Really? Has his family gone already? Tevez doesn't know what 'professional' means in any language by the looks of things. When he first handed in his transfer request the media were suggesting that Man City could come down hard on him; they hadn't though. Be surprised if he was sent to train with the kids; he seems to be such a bad influence that he might even damage the academy with his antics.

I think theres another Ronaldo too, maybe they mean him.

People seem to be getting a bit carried away with Phil Jones. He has done well but Evans was the real rock in our defence this season, Jones gets alot more credit because he is more spectacular and English. He will be a great player I believe but he isn't one yet, he is just a kid. Same thing with Cleverly, Anderson outshone him but Cleverly got all the praise. Saying that though Anderson has gone off the boil a bit in the last 3 games, maybe he feels he needs to take more of a backseat with senior midfielders on the pitch. He is young too though and just needs to find consistancy.

Well Tevez quotes about his family were when he was going on about his transfer request again. He then claimed that he wasn't right to play mentally or physically and he informed the manager that he wouldn't. This morning he claims he never refused to play. Does he not realise that his first statement was recorded or that the match was shown on TV? I dunno what City can do, if they sell him then he gets his way, if they keep him and don't play him then they have to pay £200k+ a week. Something needs to be done, players can't get away with this.

Ronaldo is a very common name as I understand it; even Ronaldinho's real name is Ronaldo something.... Starting to think it's a union thing; the thought coming from an episode of Top Gear where David Tennant was the guest, and he mentioned that Equity wouldn't allow two actors to have the same name. Come to think of it, on a Futurama commentary David X Cohen mentioned something similar. What about players coming up with their own names?

Man Utd do have a few youngsters in their team and will take time to find their best and consistency. The media spotlight has been rather bright though, and I can't see that being particularly good either. As long as Ferguson can keep them on the straight and narrow it should be fine. Maybe that match against Basel will help them not to believe the hype.

Wonder how contracts are actually worded. I would very much like to see Tevez being sued for breach of contract.

Hasn't there been a few players who produced their own names? Or atleast insisted on nicknames being on their shirts. Chicharito springs to mind. I once spent three games insisting on being called The Baron. Kind of a bad idea giving yourself PR like that when your sh*t.

Interesting developments in the Tevez case. Man City are looking at his contract to see what they can do. SSN had a lawyer on who said they could sack him but suing him wouldn't be as easy as the Adrian Mutu case. Then Jim Boyce of the IFA and FIFA came on and said he wants to see a rule brought in that means if City do sack him then he can't play for anyone else. Basically he wants the book thrown at him. Personally I'd want to drop a library on the ******.
