Truth be told, I think I'll just kick back when lack of commitments allows me and follow a match here and there.
Seems like Kagawa to Man Utd is a done deal. And it seems that Juventus could be busy as well...

What did we do for the World Cup, Kimo? Was it predict scores before each match and then tally points? I do recall winning the whole way up until the last 16 or last 8 before the rules got changed to rob me of my glory.
It was Northern Ireland that Holland hammered, Arian. They are a bit sh*t really.
I nearly crapped myself with delight when I saw that we signed Kagawa. I haven't been this excited since Berbatov.

Anyone notice that Liverpool's managing director Ayre came out slamming Whelan by calling him a comedian? While Whelan was unwise to be making so many comments to the media (picking up from The Iron Gerbil?), for someone of Ayre's stature to be slamming Whelan seems to be somewhat wrong. Surely after the Suarez situation Liverpool need to start screening or vetting the sort of things that go out to the public. (Not saying that Whelan did any better either as he really shouldn't have come out and gave regular updates like people using Twitter or something.)

Yea like that, doesn't have to be anything fancy just some simple pool like on the WCDruss99 wrote...

It was amuzing to see the 6-0 victory, they could use it but Norther Ireland isn't exactly a great team. Let's just hope that Van Marwijk has learned anything in these last few weeks although I won't get my hopes up, he's still playing like the WC team and that's not a good thing.
And people, how many times do I have to say this... it's The Netherlands, not Holland...

We call Germany: Alman, Netherlands: Holland, Poland: Lahestan, Greece: Yunan
And many European Countries like the French. It's really meaningless to call them in English!
Well, If it was Scotland or Belgium rather N.Ireland it could be more challenging and constructive ... though goals are morally beneficial.

Though in Kimo's defence, Arian, calling the Netherlands 'Holland' would be like calling Great Britain 'England'; only a small part of the whole (at least in English anyway). So I don't think it's simply calling a place a name in a particular language.
So....how does this pool work then?

Scotland?!
I can't fully remember how the pool worked last time, we could ask Rage if he's interested in joining in, he had it pretty well worked out or we could just do a very simple one. I think last time on the day we predicted the score of each match and you got a certain number of points if you got the exact score and a certain number if you got the right result.
I think Hughton would be a shrewd move. Swansea have gone in the opposite direction and are apparently talking to Denis Bergkamp.
Yeah I read that. Whelan did make a bit of an ass out of himself but then he does that every year, Liverpool just made themselves look small time again by commenting on it, really awful PR at that club. Did you see what Rodgers did too in trying to pinch Sigurdsson from Swansea? Came out in the media and said they won't make a move for him unless his deal breaks down because he has a gentlemans agreement with his former chairman. Aye, not making a move but basically coming out in the media and saying "turn down that deal and you can have a better one here". classy.

I looked the one we held at the WC up: http://social.biowar...3/index/2856267
Basicly, the matches of the first round were predicted together, than the second etc etc. The correct prediction got 10 points and the incorrect prediction but the correct winner got 5 points (in the group fase, after that the points increased)

I'd like to quote myself from that thread too, with possibly the clearest piece of judgement I've ever shown. From two years ago: "The more I see of Suarez the less I like him. " It's the closest to a coherent thought I've ever been.
Right, so we have three rounds in the groups where you can make your predictions before each round, you have until the first match of the round kicks off to make your prediction. Each stage after that is a seperate round. 10 points for correct score, 5 for correct result but wrong score. Are we missing anything? Rage was excellent at arranging it all but he might not be interested with it being the Euro's. We need to entice people in here too, someone show a bit of leg or some sideboob.
We could do predictions for things like top scorer, overall winner and hilarious failure for a laugh too.

And then I came to the last and saw my reactions to the loss against Spain.. full caps, ranting at the ref.. I quickly closed it
I think that's pretty much it, maybe we can start a new topic like Rage did 2 years ago (It really was 2 years ago..) and indeed we need some priiiiiiiiizes and the predictions of Khryak the psychic pig

If we do a pool, I'm interested, but I guess we should keep it quite simple. At least I guess only us europeans are somewhat interested in it anyway. Since, to be honest, I might watch a finals game of the Copa America or the Africa Cup, but I'm not that terribly hyped about it then.

True, most people use Netherland and Holland as synonims because during the 80 years war with Spain Holland was the richest and thus most powerfull province of the area that now covers The Netherlands and Belgium. The influence of Spain was more present in the South so because of the differences the Republic of 7 United Netherlands was founded, which consisted of the (then) 7 provinces above the rivers Maas and Rijn. Because Holland had the most power, The Netherlands and Holland became synonims. It wasn't until much later that the 3 current southern provinces and Belgium became part of the Republic of The Netherlands (with Belgium gaining independence not 2 decades later)
So to most people Holland and The Netherlands were synonims past down in history (and it was probably encouraged to think them as the same when the Republic was just founded to instigate a sense of patriotism in the people)
Of course, there are plenty op people who don't know or just don't care and say it out of ease but I'm from Brabant, from below the rivers and I will always be from Brabant not from Holland.
That's it in a nutshell.

So...Druss' prophetic vision of Suarez seems to have born fruit as it were. Anything else we can dig up?
Anyway...at least Norwich didn't have to be without a manager for long as we got Chris Hughton in to take up the reins after Lambert's departure (which seems to be a prelude for some boardroom kerfuffles regarding compensation). Hughton was my preferred choice given his time at Newcastle, and hopefully he can get Norwich performing as well. At least that's out of the way; now....when is the Holt situation going to be sorted out I wonder....
Seems like football has been hit by a couple of deaths: Jermain Defoe's father died meaning he's had to leave the squad momentarily, and also Manuel Preciado who had just been appointed Villarreal boss. Much sadness.
And....what's all that about then, Druss? Boycotting England's group games...so a bunch of MPs won't be attending the games....not exactly a loss. Now...if it something to do with what Platini said about walking off the pitch on the other hand....well...that situation seems to be a bit strange in itself: be racially abused; be punished for taking a stand. At least that's what it seems like on the surface.
Oh...on that subject again; nice to see a Liverpool player bring this up again....
EDIT: ah...OK, so the boycott is supposed to highlight Ukraine's human rights situation. Hm.....

Sad fact is Netherlands cannot qualify from its group easily and in my prediction it won't happen! Denmark, Germany and Portugal .. all are great teams. RIP Netherlands!
I officially support Germany from this moment.
Ah also good old days of World Cup. I became 7th in the prediction contest. My prize was puny unfortunately!
Worse player of the year : Criss.Ronaldo personally. Runner up Torres.
Best player of the year : Kuyt, great playing. Runner up the Robben and Sneijder
Surprising surpirse : Ghana
Favorite team : Holland and Germany
Best team : Holland
Satisfied? Let's say NO.

I wonder if anyone popped in and just read your explanation on the historical reason for the Netherland/Holland distinction, Kimo, and then thought "what has this got to do with football?"

The curses or our own witchdoctor Cerrydd? The adventures of Danish Pete?
Same here, The Dutch government treathend not to go to Ukraine, as if it is of great importance that they are present... It should be about sport not politics.
A boycott to highlight human rights abuse is a good thing but do where it hurts.. boycott their economy or in the European Union, don't do it during a sport event..
But: Shall we start the pool? The first matches are tomorrow so if everyone who wants to join get their predictions of the 1st round (meaning the first 8 matches) before the first match starts and then the next 8 at latest on the 12th?
(08/06)
Poland - Greece
Russia - Czech Republic

Netherlands - Denmark
Germany - Portugal

Spain - Italy
Republic of Ireland - Croatia

France - England
Ukraine - Sweden

Hughton did well at both Newcastle and Birmingham with limited resources. I think he is a pretty good replacement who proved he can work on a budget if he has to.
It has to be the lamest protest I've ever heard of. "Well we aren't going to take up our free tickets. How do you like dem apples?" As for the whole racism/walking off/booking thing, I agree with Platini. You can't leave it up to the player, that involves actually trusting them, too easy for someone just having a bad game get fed up and walk off then claim they were racially abused. I think it has to be up to the ref.
Arian is Dietmar the German until the end of the tournament.
I'll do my predictions tonight or in the morning when my brain is fully functional. Perhaps a new thread might be easier for us to keep track of, we could continually update the first post with the points.

It is a bit of a lame protest. If the governments were so resolute....well....I agree that they should have gone about it rather than target a sporting event. And if they are going to target a sporting event, then that's neither here nor there. I mean...boycotting the group stages? Boycott the entire thing, not just the group stages. "Yeah, we won't be at the group stages ('cause they'll be rubbish anyway), but we'll go to the final 'cause...er....that be real good!" Silly.
The Netherlands have not had the greatest experience with the race aspect so far (allegedly racist abuse was heard). UEFA seem rather....er..."Am I bovvered?" about it all really. This could be a very dicey tournament by the sounds of things; can we expect games to be stopped?
Oh...and Steve Bruce for Hull? Hm....

Exactly, its pathetic.
I'm going back to my original stance that its grown men being called names, man up, shut up and play the bloody match. Players get called all sorts during the match, I still don't get why thats worse.
Hull for promotion!
Modric to United has begun again, thats going to run all summer and very likely nothing will happen at all.

The thought of why racism, insofar that we're limited to language use, is that it may be a precursor to something more harmful. The name calling would be mild (I believe there's a skit by Reginald D. Hunter out there on YouTube about what we Brits consider racist), though some may take that further into something more sinister. Monkey chanting would be out of place to me, though it also highlights how ignorant these people are. (I know Creationist reject the theory of evolution, but others?) Anyway....
Hull for promotion indeed. I think Steve Bruce will be capable of doing a decent job there, much like he did with Birmingham back in the day. Who for the drop though? Hm.....
Hope it doesn't drag on too much. Such things are just...dire.....
Oh, the three older players for the Olympic squad, if memory serves, Beckham, Bellamy and...Giggs. Should have known Beckham would be there.
Steve Clarke to WBA. Should be interesting to see as well.

Maybe they just really like monkeys? Why does no one consider the simple solution? I noticed Evra getting booed against England, not sure if it's because he's Evra and can be a bit of a prat(although he's our prat and we love him, much like the Neviller was) or if it was Scousers continuing their bizarre Suarez defence.
It's still going strong, every few days another twist, today it's PSG have entered the "race". I can't see us buying him.
I think Pearce misread the rules and thinks the three players have to be over 33 rather than 23.
I'm not sure if Powell's a striker or midfielder but he seems to have a hell of a shot on him.
I noticed The Iron Gerbil has been doing all he can to get his media buddies to help him with demands for a new contract.

Its halftime of Germany Netherland/Holland (caught up on the little debate of holland v netherlands lol) and its 2-0 with 2 goals from super Mario Gomez. They were actually 2 real class goals. A couple of years ago I remember people were really talking about him a lot, and I had seen him a couple of times play, and he was really good. He went to Bayern, didn't do that well at first, but now it seems he is getting comfortable and hitting his form once again. Btw, Germany always seem to have really nice shirts
First half has just started, and the quality of football is pretty pretty world class lol.
