I think I read somewhere that Modric would cost £30m, and that Man Utd weren't prepared to pay that price. And knowing how Levy operates he would try to get something close to that figure.

He may well have done. That or he just saw the numbers and thought a different one.

Powell sounds like an exciting prospect. I wonder whether he will get much in the way of first team football. Can players be fast tracked?

With ESPN getting involved and not just Sky with The Iron Gerbil as well.... Though have also read that he is about to leave Tottenham as well.

Just read that di Matteo is now the new Chelsea manager. What are the chances that he won't get to fulfill those two years on the contract he has signed?

I think you can still enter, Modjo, Sparrow entered in the last round. Check with Kimo in the thread. http://social.biowar...6950/6#12562773

Indeed, £30m then the huge wages he demands, I can't see us buying him.

Jones and Kelly in the England squad are examples of players being fast tracked?

It seems The Iron Gerbil has been fired, ironically his bleeting about wanting to be England manager when Capello was still incharge got his buddies to install him as "the people's choice" for the England job which eventually combined with his other massive balls ups (January transfer activity for a start, refusing to rotate, playing Modric on the left and Bale in the middle) to get him fired from his current job. You couldn't make it up.

I'd say the odds on Di Matteo making it to Christmas are fairly long.

The Iron Gerbil is gone and just gave a huge interview on SSN, hanging out his car window ofcourse, where he just sat patting himself on the back. The part that annoys me is how he crippled the Spurs team, if I'm not mistaken he has left them with only one rightback, one leftback, two centrebacks, one right winger, one left winger and one striker with their two best players looking to leave because of their failure to make the CL. Whoever comes in after him has a bit of a mess on their hands and the media won't give them any time at all to sort it as they continue bigging up their man.

See this for a glimpse of whats to come...http://www.football3...2641/Mediawatch

I'm not sure if Jones and Kelly could be considered as being fast tracked. I guess I have in mind these programmes that companies have, like for graduates, where they learn the trade and then walk into a top job. So....in football it would be having a decent prospect at your club, train them up well and give them a decent amount of first team football, so they are capable of being first team regulars. Jones has had his fair share of game time I think, not sure about Kelly though. Also not sure how such a programme would work for football.....

Ah....The Iron Gerbil. It seems the switch of agent didn't help his hope of a new contract. I'm still amused how the media present him as having a really good year when he was acquitted of tax evasion, which still seems to be the event which made him be the best candidate for the England job. (Surely as an upstanding subject that event should never have come about.) I think Tottenham fans can start worrying, as whenever he leaves a club it always seems to be worse afterwards. Though painting Levy to be like Venky's is just....I'll leave it there.

The funniest thing about The Iron Gerbil saga is the second to last paragraph. Sums it up I think. The ensuing media output to come though....*urgh* not sure I want to watch the BBC coverage of the Euros when he's on it (even less now).

I may be missing some nuance's here but isn't that generally the plan with most young players? I know it doesn't always work out like that, but to me that seems like the generally ideal way to bring through young players. The way we do with the Carling Cup and loan system. I suspect I'm being really thick here and completely missing the point, mind you I did tie my own shoe laces together earlier so it's not surprising.

I suspect he wanted fired and thats why he made the noises in public. Modric and Bale possibly leaving and Spurs looking to invest in a new stadium, so not much money for fixing the squad he wrecked with terrible man management and with Arsenal and Chelsea looking stronger and a renewed threat from Newcastle. He got himself fired now and got his big pay off before his stock falls with a failure next year. Spurs falling back down to mid-table and struggling to get anywhere near the champions league from having a great squad with a lot of potential in one year? It's not unthinkable and given The Iron Gerbil's past history...

I had to laugh at that one. But I still think the best one is the claim that Spurs have lost the affection to call him Harry. I cringed and laughed at the same time.

Yeah, I see your point, Druss. That is pretty much the way teams tend to integrate younger players, though I guess I'm thinking of an increased intensity to their first team experience. I know Wenger uses the Carling Cup almost exclusively to give his younger players that experience, but I suppose what I was suggesting was more league experience along the same lines. I have it in my mind that West Ham tended to throw their youngsters into the fray a lot earlier than most teams, and they become 'fully blooded' as it were to league action. Full games, or as long as their physical condition will allow (certainly don't want the frailty of some of the Arsenal squad), rather than the odd substitution.

Could have been a ploy by him. Certainly didn't hear the whole 'mutual parting of ways' explanation. What it does is leave his reputation intact (at least this is how I would expect the media will spin it), and whatever happens to the club he could claim whatever would be beneficial to him. If they do good, then he gave them the foundations to do so. If they do badly, then it's because he's no longer there. Pretty much win-win in that situation for him.

Yeah, '[losing] the affection' line was a strange and funny one. Wonder when that line will be trotted out again.

There was an interesting letter in the mailbox of F365 suggesting Whelan should get The Iron Gerbil in at Wigan. The media would have a field day...or week.

I think some teams do that with an increased intensity and plan for certain youngsters, though I'm struggling to think of a specific example. Chamberlain at Arsenal?

The media backlash against Spurs and Levy is continuing apace, you'd think it was the journalists that got fired and not The Iron Gerbil the way some of them are going on.

Imagine the battle between Whelan and The Iron Gerbil for camera time. Whelan coming in in a monster truck crushing The Iron Gerbil's car as he is giving another interview out his car window just to get a soundbyte of his own in.

Michael Laudrup to Swansea, that will be interesting he might attract a bigger brand of player but probably won't because someone else will offer more money. I noticed Liverpool have bid for Sigurdsson, why did Rodgers bother with his claims he would let Swansea have first crack?

This...http://www.football3...kalikes/7801154 It's possibly the best thing ever.

SSN just anounced that Spurs are talking to Laurent Blanc.

I get the feeling that not many teams in the Premiership really do that much with Oxlade-Chamberlain probably being the one with the most game time. In recent times I would suggest someone like....I think his name is Freddy Sears at West Ham before they were relegated. He got a lot of game time back then I recall. I guess the top teams tend not to do it themselves, hence the loaning out of players, is because they can't afford to in case they can't do a job in the league and lose ground on whatever their target is that season.

Well....the journalists got a good soundbite out of The Iron Gerbil that he wouldn't slit his neck over it. Seriously though: suicide?

Monster trucks! 'Nuff said.

Maybe after Swansea get past the second season they can afford to splash a bit more cash for players and attract the sort of players the manager can attract. As for the Sigurdsson situation....I guess it depends on the precise wording of that agreement Rodgers have with Swansea. He might let Swansea speak to him first and all that, but the board? Hm.... He's got the whole using the media to do the work for him angle worked out anyway.

Yeah, that's a kicker of a look-a-like. That tree has some charisma....

Interesting choice for Tottenham. I think I read somewhere that Ferguson would want Blanc to succeed him at Man Utd as well; if true then that's a very interesting scenario opening up.

Looks like the fixtures list has been released. Norwich are away to Fulham first game of the season. Looks like a tricky run for us in October, not particularly relishing that. Christmas period doesn't look good either. Last game of the season against Man City as well..... Hm.....looks doable in a sense as long as the players keep at it and don't crumble.

With the conclusion of the Euro pool it's time to get back here for the usual shenanigans methinks.

So....what sort of changes do we have upcoming?

Grant Holt has signed a new three year contract at Norwich; so it seems he got what he seemingly wanted. And Hughton has been busying himself in the transfer window.

AVB now at Tottenham, so that should spice things up come the various derbies in London.

Beckham being left out of the Great Britain Olympic football squad. It's intriguing to note the apparent backlash against Pearce for that decision coming from the seemingly non-football follower public.

Blackburn may be in the Championship but they've made moves in the window as well. Be interesting to keep an eye on them during the forthcoming season to see how they fare given all the shenanigans this past season. (We need a soap opera team.)

I couldn't find this thread when I looked last week.

Changes? Goal line technology possibly coming in is one change.

I saw the Holt thing on SSN. Pleased?

AVB is why I was looking for this thread. Well TIG was, he was on SSN giving an interview, you can imagine the contents. Lies, backpedaling and patting himself on the back. Apparently playing Modric in the middle was his genius idea when no one else trusted his slight frame in there and he more or less discovered Bale. I seem to recall he was about to loan or sell Bale to a Championship team, was playing Modric on the left because HE was the one that didn't trust him in the middle and an injury crisis forced him to move Modric inside and play Bale as a winger. Quite the genius. He also never wanted the England job and AVB has a team capable of winning the league. classic Iron Gerbil, puts pressure on AVB that he can never live up to while patting himself on the back. AVB himself is hard to call, he was clearly undermined at Chelsea by players with too much power. But the way he handled Alex and Anelka didn't help I suppose.

I like Pearce leaving him out, but how does he expect Giggs to play all those matches? Most of the backlash I've seen so far has been from blinkered fans who think Beckham is as good as Scholes or Pirlo and the media. I haven't seen the non-football fan reaction yet but am I right in thinking its ridiculous?

Yeah, Blackburn gave a 36 year old Nuno Gomez (who never looked that good in his prime) a 2 year contract. Something tells me Liverpool might take over as soap opera team. Rodgers to be sacked by January. I'm enjoying seeing Spurs hi-jacking their hi-jacking of the Sigurdsson deal. It amused me.

Waiting for the transfer window to really heat up, City have yet to get involved and I think us and Chelsea might have a big transfer left in us. I'm happy with the Kagawa signing though, wish Nani would sign his new contract soon.

Prior to today the last time this thread was active was two weeks ago, so goodness knows where it ended up due to our camping at the Euro pool thread during that time. At least all the spam threads have gone otherwise....

Yeah, that's certainly one to look at as well. Saw the argument against it which I hadn't considered in that it's the beginning of a slippery slope. What if the ball had crossed the line marginly but the shot was taken in an offside position? Why scrutinize one decision but not another? I think the England-Russia match was one such example with Russia's disallowed 'goal'. It could be a very tricky situation.

Yeah. It's good that he decided to stay in the end, and I hope that the kerfuffle doesn't have any adverse effect upon his own form and ability and whatnot.

The Iron Gerbil already up and at 'em, eh? Blimey. Then again we anticipated this sort of shenanigan even before Tottenham appointed someone to take over, so it wasn't really much of a surprise. AVB is an interesting choice, and I guess his first task to see who wants to leave, i.e., Modric. Can AVB manage to keep him there so they build on their league position? All in all, finishing fourth certainly isn't a bad result.

I got the impression that the general backlash was from non-football fans; though I am making the rather huge assumption that football fans would understand why Pearce chose to leave Beckham out of the squad. Don't know how many games there are in the Olympic football tournament, but I wouldn't really expect Giggs to play in a lot of matches. Likely to be used as a calming and reassuring measure towards the end of a nervy game I would think.

Blackburn also got Leon Best as well. Not really sure how they will do come the start of the season. What will Venky's and Bob have in store for us?

Liverpool could well be that soap opera team, though....depending how di Matteo works at Chelsea I could see a situation there as well.

Can't remember Sigurdsson's club. Hoffenheim? Wasn't he given a few weeks holiday to sort out his future as they deemed it pointless for him to return to the club, and gave him a deadline as well? Surely that time is getting close to being up.

The rumour mill seems to suggest van Persie to Man City, though they would have to sell first. Perhaps that might mean they are keeping an eye on the whole FFP thing. Or slow at conducting business.

Kagawa's signing seemed to take ages before it was confirmed that he had signed after the initial agreement.

So.. back to this thread

Van Persie isn't going to extend his current contract so it's pretty clear he is going to leave, the only question is when.

The transfer window here is pretty alive, mostly with transfers within The Netherlands. The only big international transfers were Van Bommel to PSV and Guidetti back to Manchester City.

NAC, however, have the massive number of 13 players, including 2 keepers. we can probably get that number up with players from  our own youth and some players on amateur base and probably 2/3 more because of the sale of some players.
There is absolutely no money but we exist 100 years in September so we atleast have a massive party to look forward to:happy:

Indeed we are.

Read that earlier. Interesting as Wenger is supposed to have said something about keeping van Persie at all costs, but after that....not sure what 'at all costs' amounts to. While I think the speculation is that van Persie will be sold that just doesn't seem like Wenger's way of doing things. While he does well in buying players in, I have to admit I would doubt how their transfer balance works out; I suspect that he doesn't make a great deal overall as Wenger seems to prefer letting players fulfil their contracts and leave on a free than sell them.

I only note the big transfers myself. Still only observing from afar on my armchair, on a beach or something....

That sounds rather low, Kimo. Now that sounds like the bare bones that The Iron Gerbil always seems to be on about when results aren't going his way.

Ooo....congratulations are in order then.

I apologize for nearly killing the thread with a Big Mick pic but it had to be done.

Expect the transfer shenanigans to really heat up towards the end of July leading into the month of August (i.e. the final transfer panic), when managers realize they've still got a bucket load to spend before the end of the month.

AVB at Tottenham and Sigurddson as their first major signing I believe? Not bad I suppose, I guess AVB will get more time to test his mettle in the PL with Spurs than he ever did with Chelsea though the big question is he able to keep some of the players in his squad. Heard that Bale has signed a new contract with them too.

And very interested in seeing how the Van Persie situation develops, not wanting to extend the contract with Arsenal after they've just bought two new strikers doesn't seem that illogical if he feels he can engineer move from there in the next few months. Am I wrong in thinking that he might be thinking of a move to Spain? Could see Real try and make an offer for him.

I don't expect to let him just walk away when his contract ends, so they will probably try to sell him either now or during the winterstop.

It is low, thanks to some top notch mismanagement in the last years we ended up with a negative net worth of 11 million. Thanks to some great cutting and improvising, NAC was able to sell some players and get a busload of hired/amateur based players last year and kick out the entire management.
This year NAC managed to sell some of its best players, the money goes to the payback of debts but the salary comes available to buy a transfer free player that wants to play for NAC, so doesnt ask a lot of money. But luckily we still have great players with a true heart for the club, those that won't leave a near bankrupt, nearly relegating club for some more money.

This year we have a brand new management with clear goals and clear talk, every single opportunity to get money is being tried out with exeption for the things that go against the club's culture, like selling the club to some rich guy (that impossible thanks to the change in company lay within the club (I dont know how you call that in english..)) and things that would destroy the club culture like changing the colors etc

But even though there is no money, other organisations, supporters, sponsors etc collected money to celebrate that the club exist 100 years

Congratulations to Corinthians for winning their first ever Copa Libertadores!

I tried to watch the Corinthians game but it was on pay-per-view. Let's hope they give Chelsea a firm spanking.

Van Persie will end up at Man City, there will be rumours all summer about United, Real Madrid, Barcelona, AC Milan, Inter Milan, PSG, Bayern Munich and Juventus. But he's most likely already agreed a deal with City and its all just a ploy to make it look like he rejected everyone else to join their "project". It's the way things work now. I don't think any team really needs him enough to break the bank, so City will spunk the big wages on him with only half hearted competition. I expect Modric to end up at City or Chelsea too, a deal already agreed with the whole Madrid and not wanting to sell to an English club scenario just another way of saying "Look how desperate he was to join us!!".

That Big Mick pic is competing for the title of best thing ever.

Goal line tech is to be given the go ahead today, apparently. Like you said Obaka its strange to use it for one decision and not another but crossing the line is fairly black and white and will take seconds. If they are looking at offside then they have to look at was he ahead of the defenders? Was it part of his body he could score with? Was he a part of the play then? Was it a defender that made the final touch to him? A ref could be looking at that for 5 minutes and still have no clear answer.

That seems... complicated, Kimo.

Did anyone hear about UEFA using fake footage of fans and coaches during the Euro's? Stuff filmed earlier used to try and make live events more dramatic. Like previous footage of Joachim Lowe being used during a match and footage of a girl who cried during the national anthem for Germany being used after Italy's second goal in the semi-final. I know Match of the Day sometimes do that with managers, but doing it during a live match? Showing managers, fans, players not playing, celebrities in the stand and slow motion replays of players faces while the ball is in play already annoyed the ****** off me. This makes it even worse, do we really need this to get more "drama" from a match?

Drama, Drama everywhere
Why can't they just say: I don't like your offer, I'm gone. If you're only in it for the money at least be honest about it.. you're fooling no-one, especially not if you go to City or some Russian club like Anzhi..

Platini wanted to postpone the decision once again, so even if they implement it in competitions and WC's, the CL and maybe the EC might not even get it..
Goal line is easier and faster than offside decisions but it will probably still take a lot of time implemening it since they FIFA demands 100% accuracy, that it works in every weather condition and that the ref is notified within 1 second..

Basicly the current management is busy cleaning up after the last one and because of that we have no money and need to improvise to get a full team together for next year.

Yea, I heard it. As soon as that woman saw hereself on those big screens she called someone to say that it wasn't live, I have no problem with them showing some footage of the fans once in a while if it's to show atmosphere during the match but it is getting ridiculous. They seem to only show hot woman (not that's a bad thing but it makes no sense..) and some celebrity who probably is there just to show his/her face.. It's just a way for Platini to be able to laugh his ass off how can do whatever he likes and be able to fool everbody..

The best part is Van Persie saying money wasn't even discussed, which to me indicates someone else has made an offer he knows Arsenal can't match. His statement basically disrespects Wenger, the club and his team mates. Some captain, I'd like to know what Wenger alledgedly said to him. I think on his day, when he's fit he is one of the top two or three strikers in the world and now Drogba is gone he is the best striker in the PL. The problem is that he's been so injury prone it makes handing him huge wages and meeting Arsenals fee a massive gamble. He must know this and already has a deal lined up, otherwise why burn his bridges like that? Thats what I believe anyway. I'm preparing to ignore him being linked to United all summer, I'd love to see it, but know it won't happen. Our last Dutch striker didn't do too badly...

The decision has gone through and goal line technology is in. Both systems. Not sure when domestic leagues will have it but its going to be in for the Club World Championships and the World Cup in Brazil.

Is the future bleak or is there a plan to sort the finances out, Kimo? Mismanagement of clubs is rampant across Europe it seems. Look at the debacle in Scotlan.

Yeah, I've wondered why they show the hot women. Is it to give men something to look at or some odd way of saying its ok for women to like it too? I don't mind them cutting away when the ball goes out of play to a manager or the crowd, but when they do it while the ball is in play or constantly show a player in the crowd/celebrity it drives me up the wall. Especially during Real Madrid matches, as if Mourinho is more important than the match. Actually saving footage to interrupt the match with is going way too far.

Speaking of drama there is that situation with Glasgow Rangers: which division will this newco end up? They've been denied entry into the SPL as it is. In England I'm sure a new club has to start at the bottom and then work their way up (Wimbledon AFC is it?).

As for van Persie....I wait with baited breath as to what Arsenal and Wenger decide to do after that released statement.

Is it just me or that Platini and Blatter don't really see eye-to-eye on a few issues?

As for the goal line technology, yeah, I see that side of the argument more clearly (for its use). The offside things can take a lot of mulling over before it's decided one way or another (even in the pub but I'm sure alcohol has its part to play there). I think one of the points that some seem to miss is that a ball crossing over a line (or perceived to have crossed a line) is a natural stopping point. An offside decision is only natural if the whistle is blown and that isn't guaranteed. If one really wanted to push for tech to be in football the next introduction would be to ratify whether a ball has gone out of play. I still remember the shambles of some refereeing decisions in the 2002 World Cup.

That does sound like a messy situation there, Kimo. Hope the club comes out OK.

At least it keeps someone in an editing job. *Cough*

As for AVB at Tottenham....wonder what the press will have for us about their first signing.....

I don't think the Rangers thing would happen to a proper big team in a league that actually matters. The fact they aren't being forced to start at the bottom and they actually asked the other teams renders the whole thing a bit of a joke, looks like the SFA trying to save them. Dump them to the bottom division or non-league and be done with it. They would need to get it sorted soon to get the fixtures sorted, I'm not sure they even have a squad anymore.

They could keep him I suppose, but after what he said? He basically called his team mates not good enough. Even Roy Keane didn't survive that.

I think Platini seems to hate Blatter. No one knows what Blatter thinks, its one of the mysteries of humanity.

I was going to say surely they have enough officials to tell if the ball is out of play, but then I thought about it and realised I was quite wrong.

You mean Sigurdsson? I laughed at Rodgers catty comments, he went to Spurs for more money. Well why would he go to Liverpool and accept less money than Henderson, Shelvey or Carroll? They thought they could pay him Swansea wages. Be interesting to see what AVB is handed to spend, The Iron Gerbil left that squad in bad shape.

That does seem to be the case. I'm of the opinion that when it comes to finances we'd have to keep an eye on Portsmouth to see if they do get liquidated in the near future. After all that has gone on there they seem to be the most likely to suffer such a fate. But yeah, it does seem the SFA is essentially trying to avoid their responsibility regarding the situation surrounding Rangers.

Much depends on Wenger now. I still think given his track record he would usually rather let players leave on a free than sell them; though van Persie is forcing his hand in the matter. Like some I dislike the 'leaving for trophies' reason for players at certain clubs. If it was a player at Norwich stating that, and the clubs interested and bidding are genuine trophy contenders then fair enough. But for a player at a club is on the brink seems...I don't know, it's hard to convey in words. One letter in the F365 mailbox I do agree with, for players like Flamini and Fabregas citing wanting trophies it feels like a quitter's attitude to me; in that they don't have the stomach for the fight and would rather move to an already successful club so there is less pressure in a sense. Current state of mind on this issue: confused.

Seemingly true on both counts, Druss.

Yeah, and I'm still not sure what those officials behind the goal line have actually contributed to the refereeing team so far.

Indeed. Going to a bigger club players expect bigger wages (by how much is up to the individual's greed, er...I mean discretion). So if that's how Liverpool were trying to negotiate....badly played. Perhaps they thought Sigurdsson would follow Rodgers scent or something.

As for the Tottenham squad The Iron Gerbil has left AVB....well....typical of The Iron Gerbil really.

A thought has occurred to me: David Whelan, The Iron Gerbil and David Beckham at the same club in some alternate universe....(any other personnel we could chuck in there?)

News update: as I expected, Van Gaal was named the new coach of The Netherlands national equipe, he has a great wealth of experience behind him and he will probably want everyone to forget than under his lead we didn't even make the WC in 2002. So I'm looking forward to see how he will do..

So far what I've read the new management is going to do everything possible to make the club financially healthy again and slowly the selection starts to grow with people who are either young or have proved to be people who want to fight for the club. I don't expect a place above 12th but it's good to see things going the right direction for a change.

Platini has illusions of grandeur, in the EUFA he can basicly do whatever he wants but with the big decisions he has to take orders from Blatter and he doesn't like that one bit. Ofcourse it doesn't help that Blatter makes more left turns than a NASCAR driver..

Looks like Southampton bought Büttner from Vitesse. I don't know if they stand any change to evade delegation but Büttner played a really good season here and even managed to score 5 times (as a back). I hope he fares better than Ronnie Stam because he could be one of those players that will become worthy of attention this season.
