Van Gaal made his first impression at United, by showing up completely in blue which some people immediately linked to City.

So a funny guy made a tweet about it in classical Van Gaal English:

That RVP picture looks much more like Klose.

I just watched Van Gaal's first press conference, I kind of love him. He told one journalist off for asking a stupid question and gave another a bit of a death stare. When asked about Wayne Rooney he avoided the question sounding like he was unimpressed by him and started talking about Michael Carrick being injured. His English was much better than I was expecting too and sounded nothing like Steve McClaren's hilarious Dutch accent. A million miles away from Moyes looking like a deer in the headlights last year.

I'm a bit concerned that he wants to wait another month or so before deciding on making signings. Fair enough he wants to have a look at the team before making decisions, but how many more chances does Ashley Young need? Nani, Jones, Evans, Rafael, RVP, Fletcher and Smalling aren't going to suddenly become less injury prone either. Plus we have to replace Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra and Giggs. I think waiting is a bad idea.

With the season starting this weekend there have been some developments here in the Netherlands.

First of, Zwolle won against Ajax in the match over the Johan Cruyff cup (The Super Cup here). After beating Ajax last year 5-1 in the final of the normal cup they won 1-0 this time and absolutely not undeserved. Ajax looked seriously weak and I hope the will continue this steak and will lose many matches this year..

And also in that match the referees used that same spray they used in the WC only appearently the discount version because it dissapeared before the ref was finished spaying :)

Boulahrouz returned to the Netherlands to play for Feyenoord, only to become injured and miss the season start.

And I like that Van Gaal is doing the same thing with Van Persie. Besides the fact that 3 weeks holiday after the holiday that is the WC is ridiculous, if a player isn't good enough he doesn't play. It atleast makes it look like he is not giving Van Persie preferential treatment. Though I hated the fact that he stated that he needs reinforcements.. he has a practically limitless budget, if he wants them he should go get them .. The same applies to his staff.. Scoles left for a reason..

And, NEC, who relegated to the 2nd division in the Netherlands won't play in their new shirts for the first couple of matches. The clothing sponsor couldn't manage to deliver all the shirts on time :)

Plus two referees who were active last year failed their fitness tests even funnier though is the fact that one of them already refereed a European match a short while ago..

We, at NAC, still miss a forward. We have a pretty decent team. Hell we even got some talents of AC Milan and Chelsea who had no future there, which can be huge for us but we are still waiting for Chelsea to allow Perica to come or find another forward.

But meanwhile we got even more important news: the beer price won't go up :D (and we are now sponsored by Europe's biggest sexshop)

So no topic of Man U crashing to defeat at home to a welsh club?  You guys are slacking off!

I just watched one half of Manchester United - Los Angeles Galaxy friendly last night. Rooney scored, but wasn't even happy about it. He probably thought that he scored to a team of youths! Mata is a good addition to MU. And nice Chevrolet sponsor sign on their shirts!

Yea I know.. I laughed when I heard that news, after so much hype to bring him in he goes ahead and losed the first match :P I told you Van Gaal is useless..

Meanwhile Liverpool bought Balotteli.. Seriously, who is approving all these purchases over there? First Suarez and now Balotteli.. why would you want these player in your team...

And we had a fun story here as well.. Ajax announced with big interviews and articles that Eto'o might come to Amsterdam. Ofcourse, outside Ajax absolutely no-one took this news seriously and made fun of them for seriously believing it would happen. Recently Ajax revoked their offer because they finally realized that it was never going to happen:P

So far it is limited to board sponsoring only but they are going to expand it so we might get something a little more exciting during halftime then childeren trying to score against a fat goalkeeper..

United losing the first game means absolutely nothing to me and was to be honest something that i came to suspect would happen just because the team is so not ready for this season in any capacity and that i'd set myself up for massive disappointment if i did't believe that at least the fall if not the entire season will be a trying experience. I got no reason to doubt Van Gaal at the moment, just looking at the players he got to use and it's a miracle he need to perform to get them to not be a disaster

Only board sponsoring at the moment, kimo? I await for something more exotic....

Man Utd are undoubtedly still in that 'transitional phase' which coincided with Ferguson's retirement. (Missed all the stuff with Moyes in charge; might have to go back the thread to check that out...) Time will tell how well the players will do for van Gaal. From what I am aware of, they had a pretty decent pre-season.

In the mean time, I'm quite pleased with Norwich being third in the Championship after four games; and beating our local rivals Ipswich!

So far yes, I am hoping for more in the future :)

Does 'losing 4-0 against a 3rd division club' still falls under the term transitional phase? Losing to Swansea could happen, getting destroyed by Milton Keynes is something more serious. As was his reaction immediately after the match; instead of shaking the other coach's hand he starts handing out autographs, not really the time and place for that..

And did any of you saw the CL yesterday? Malmo getting through was impressive enough but what happend at Loedogorets - Steaua was amazing. Just before penaly shootout, the keeper of Loedogorets gets a red card with already 3 subs made. So a defender picks up his gloves, scores the first penalty for Loedogorets and then goes ahead and stops 2 penalties from Steaua, winning the match±

Despite Arsenal played awfully last night (in attacks), it won over Beshiktash and now is qualified for European championship cup. Much better first performance than Man U for sure!

Malmö making it through to the group stage is as close to a miracle as Swedish club football has experienced in 14 years. Last team that made it through was Helsingborg in 2000/2001 so it was a much needed boost. If any team would make it through it would be them and for once they didn't falter under the pressure and proved that some talent still exist in the national clubs and not outside.

Group A with Juventus, Atlectico Madrid and Olympiacos is a decent group in terms of attracting revenue. Would've loved group F just because then all 4 clubs would have Zlatan Ibrahimovic in common but could certainly be much worse.

All I can say is: Phew! I thought those wasted chances were going to come back to bite the Gunners. On the positive side, the last 15 minutes was a test of guts, resilience and determination, and I happy to say they passed with flying colours.

Anyway, the draw's out. As usual, Man City got screwed by the seedings despite being one of the stronger teams, and will have to tangle with Bayern Munich and Roma. Arsenal is also in a pretty tough group, with Borussia Dortmund, top Turkish club Galatasaray and Belgian champions Anderlecht. Real Madrid will welcome Liverpool back to the Champions League, but otherwise I see them going through in second place. Chelsea has a fairly straightforward group.

Which other groups caught your eyes?

Check out the Champions League stuff when it comes around again.

Interested to see this Saturday's Premier League results. A nine goal fest between Everton and Chelsea. As much as some are praising Chelsea's title credentials it seems to suggest that Everton are doing pretty well under Martinez. Actually, Everton has been quite a pretty decent team with Martinez at the helm; I've been pretty impressed with him thus far. Interesting that he declined the Liverpool job at the time before it was offered back to Rodgers, though Everton has seemingly benefitted from that decision. Mind you, Everton were very lucky Howard wasn't sent off for handball out of the area. How that wasn't a sending off is puzzling. Costa looked really sharp during that game too.

Man Utd's troubles seems to be ongoing. Will be 'transitional' for as long as they don't win and produce something resembling good form. Don't really understand why defenders weren't a priority for the transfer window really as Ferdinand and Vidic were leaving. Was interesting to see di Maria, Mata, van Persie and Rooney start the match; how long before the goals start going in?

Somewhat disappointed after a good start by Norwich with yesterday's draw with Bournemouth. Hoping we can plug away and be near the top come the end of the season. Truthfully, as long as we're above Ipswich it's fine....

Chelsea vs Everton was wild. It was like stepping into an alternate universe where defenders didn't exist. Still, knowing Jose, he'll go right to fixing that, even if it means boring everyone to sleep again. I still think the title will be between them and Man City.

It's early days, but I always thought Costa's playing style was perfect for the fast-paced, physical style of football that is played in the Premier League. The guy's like a human battering ram; he charges in and wreaks havoc and destruction, and now he's got Fabregas to help unleash him.

Van Gaal's a great manager, but he's not some messianic figure who's going to single-handedly fix all of Man United's woes. United fans are finding that out now. He needs time - and a big bag of cash.

Anyone that had the insane idea that Van Gaal could fix all of Uniteds problems with just waving his hand is really getting the awakening they should've had a long time ago. I got no doubt that he will turn United around but it will take a lot of time and things will look even worse before they start to look better. The transformation he will have to do should've started years ago and was delayed for so long that it's going to be one very painful ride. Some issues have been adressed already and some are getting adressed at the moment but more remain.

What's interesting is that supporters seem to have been crying out for specific positions to be covered, particularly midfield, for many years; even when Ferguson was still manager. Why these positions seemed to be ignored is puzzling. Moyes never had the clout to attract top tier players; van Gaal should. Though Man Utd's ability to carry out transfer these last few years have been rather suspect and deals seem to be harder to complete.

Transfer deadline day, so it'll be interesting to see who comes and goes at which clubs.

I have a suspicion the greatest relief is Torres going out on loan for two years.

Why this color?

It's the reason why Real was bashed last night. Plus Real needs better defensive players. Plus Kroos sucks.

Arsenal have splashed out £16m for Danny Welbeck apparently. That seems like a hell of a lot of money for a player I've never considered more than mediocre.

Can't stop laughing after learning about this. I'd be happy if United could have Welbeck sold for even half of that. In no universe is he ever worth that money

Welbeck? Seriously, Arsene, Welbeck? The likes of Falcao and Remy were on the market and you chose... ...Danny Welbeck? *sigh* At least he's better than Sanogo. Then again, a jar of horse testicles dipped in custard is better than Sanogo.

Van Gaal talked extensively about how his team is unbalanced, so his solution to go sign... ...Falcao. Either he's playing 3-4-3 or he's dropping Rooney to midfield - something Rooney will not like. Meanwhile, Shinji Kagawa bid his "Sayonara" and went back to Dortmund.

All in all, Chelsea and Man City have pretty much aced this transfer window, and even Liverpool have done very well. As for Arsenal, their tradition of inaction and disappointment continues.
