First, I'd like to express nothing but the best of wishes to Newcastle midfielder Jonas Gutierrez, who is currently battling testicular cancer. Get well soon, Spidey.
Right, to more Champions League. In the season's first clash of the 800-pound gorillas, Bayern Munich beat Manchester City 1-0, with Boateng scoring the stunning winner. As a spectacle, it wasn't the best of games, but the quality was high, and City did half-threaten Bayern a handful of times. Still, the game was clearly Bayern's; even though they didn't start danger-men Robben and Ribery, they still sowed chaos amongst the City backline, who often looked sluggish. Only heroics from Joe Hart prevented this game from being 2-0 or 3-0.
And in the third Anglo-German clash which I somehow completely forgot about, Fabregas opened the scoring for Chelsea, though he probably should have seen yellow instead. Chelsea then cruised for a while, but failed to convert on a number of chances, and Schalke made them pay. Drogba started the game, before Costa came on to try to rescue the situation, to no avail. The game finished 1-1.
Final score: Germany 2, England 0. Pass the lederhosen, I'll get the bratwurst.
Elsewhere, Roma curb-stomped CSKA Moscow 5-1, with Gervinho bagging a double, continuing the tradition of ex-Arsenal players flourishing whenever they manage to escape Wenger's clutches. Porto enjoyed a similarly one-sided 6-0 win over the Belarusian outfit BATE Borisov. Barcelona cruised past a stubborn Apoel Nicosia 1-0, and Ajax fought PSG to a 1-1 standstill.
Next up, Europa League, then the weekend fixtures. Looking forward to Man City vs Chelsea.
Wellbeck ruined two goal opportunities. Others weren't playing good too (Or better to say Dortmund is actually better than Bayern right now). Only Szczęsny did a good job saving the goal many times.
Yeah, the collective sigh among Arsenal fans when the signing was announced always had at least a partial justification, and this just proved them right. That being said, Welbeck was the least of Arsenal's problems on the night; their midfield were ineffective, and their defensive options were paper-thin. Szczesny really shouldn't have been as busy as he was.
Oh well, yay for "winning" the fourth place "trophy" for another season, right?
