Man United is back in action, and Di Maria brought his international form back with him, excelling in a 4-0 win to end LVG's quest for his first win. Falcao, meanwhile, started off his Man United career with a bench-warming operation. Mind you, it was only QPR - the real tests will come next month when they play Everton and Chelsea.

Only 19 fouls and 1 yellow card in total, so the game was pretty clean. That said, I think the referee Phil Dowd should have seen yellow for this. Come on, ref, he barely touched you.

Manchester United: The beast awakes!

Arsenal: Have faith in Wenger!

Chelsea: Our defense line rules, our attack line rocks!

Manchester United City: We're the richest, bow before us!

Liverpool: Takes us Seriously!

Meanwhile in Spain Real Madrid still feels cursed.

Good game by Man United. It's still going to be way below usual quality for a while longer but at least we got a glimpse of what United can do when something is going right. At least I can take heart in seeing the central midfield actually doing a good job for the first time in probably over a year in United.

Neymar and Messi are looking dangerous. With Suarez on the way I'm expecting Messi's assist count to look monstrous this season.

Last thing from the weekend, of the "Holy crap, did you see that?" category: Italian Serie A. Parma vs AC Milan. Nine goals (Milan won 5-4), two red cards, a ridiculous back-heel, and Milan's goalkeeper somehow got injured while taking a back pass, resulting in an own-goal. After they ran out of substitutions. What the heck were they doing, having a riot?

Anyway, Champions League coming up, with a distinctly Germany vs England flavour: Dortmund versus Arsenal, Bayern Munich vs Man City.

Damn that Milan game was weird. I only watched the highlights but what the hell was going on there?..

I haven't heard anything about Balotelli yet so it seems he is keeping himself calm for a change.. I wonder how long that will last..

And it looks like United finally manged to get their first win in. Still, it's fun to see that Van Gaal is not the most successful Dutch coach in the Premier League at the moment.

And after saying that Blind played a good match all cartoonist jumped into action in what we still call Van Gaal English here:

Meanwhile, in The Netherlands

PSV, the only club not to have lost a single match lost.

Feyenoord, who seemed to climb out of their negative spiral at the end of last season fell right back into it by hopelessly losing against a team that promoted..

And we won!, 2 games in a row now, that has been a while. Plus we are on the left side of the table, which hasn't happened for nearly 2 years now..

PSV is my favorite Dutch team. I hope it will never experience the same fate as Werder Bremen. The team that hardly can stay in Bundesliga.

Tonight I'm gonna watch Dortmund - Arsenal.

All of the new players in United did a good match against QPR which obviously was a much needed boost for the team. Now it was QPR and not a team like Arsenal where players like Blind will have to actually do well before I'm willing to be putting any faith in him. Di Maria and Herrera I got no doubts at all will do just excellent against any team in the league. It's still way too early to draw any conclusions about right about anything with United.

It will be odd to not cheer for United in the champions league but maybe for once I'll be able to enjoy watching every kind of game and starting with Dortmund - Arsenal and with Juventus - Malmö in the background.

Borussia - Arsenal will be fun to watch. Bayern got defeated by them a while ago, so I'm curious to see how Arsenal will do.

Well, Dortmund absolutely steam-rollered Arsenal and yet the score ended up only 2-0. Most of the Arsenal players looked well off the pace and the result could easily have been far worse for them.

Dortmund outplayed Arsenal in a 2-0 win - which doesn't surprise me. When your defensive options are so spent you have to resort to giving a 19-year old kid a start against a slick and dangerous counter-attacking side like Dortmund, you would consider yourself lucky to not concede 4 or 5 goals. Dortmund had 23 goal attempts to 5 - that just about says it all.

Liverpool survived against a very stubborn Ludogorets side to win 2-1. After 80 minutes of frustration, Balotelli demonstrated the value of a having a "wrecking machine" striker like him on your side; the guy was surrounded by three defenders, and still somehow got off a clean shot at goal. That goal put Liverpool to sleep, which Ludogorets exploited to equalize on the break, before the Bulgarians' goalkeeper made a bone-headed challenge in his box, which Steven Gerrard was only too happy to make him regret. Welcome to the Champions League.

Elsewhere, Real Madrid looked slick in the first half as they thrashed Basel 5-1, with James "Don't Call Me James" Rodriguez finally opening his account. Olympiakos beat last season's finalists Atletico Madrid 3-2 in a feisty encounter. Zenit St Petersburg beat Benfica 2-0 in Portugal. Watch these guys. Many pundits are tipping them to be the surprise package of this season, and this is a good start by them in fulfilling that billing.

Wellbeck ruined two goal opportunities. Others weren't playing good too (Or better to say Dortmund is actually better than Bayern right now). Only Szczęsny did a good job saving the goal many times.

First, I'd like to express nothing but the best of wishes to Newcastle midfielder Jonas Gutierrez, who is currently battling testicular cancer. Get well soon, Spidey.

Right, to more Champions League. In the season's first clash of the 800-pound gorillas, Bayern Munich beat Manchester City 1-0, with Boateng scoring the stunning winner. As a spectacle, it wasn't the best of games, but the quality was high, and City did half-threaten Bayern a handful of times. Still, the game was clearly Bayern's; even though they didn't start danger-men Robben and Ribery, they still sowed chaos amongst the City backline, who often looked sluggish. Only heroics from Joe Hart prevented this game from being 2-0 or 3-0.

And in the third Anglo-German clash which I somehow completely forgot about, Fabregas opened the scoring for Chelsea, though he probably should have seen yellow instead. Chelsea then cruised for a while, but failed to convert on a number of chances, and Schalke made them pay. Drogba started the game, before Costa came on to try to rescue the situation, to no avail. The game finished 1-1.

Final score: Germany 2, England 0. Pass the lederhosen, I'll get the bratwurst.

Elsewhere, Roma curb-stomped CSKA Moscow 5-1, with Gervinho bagging a double, continuing the tradition of ex-Arsenal players flourishing whenever they manage to escape Wenger's clutches. Porto enjoyed a similarly one-sided 6-0 win over the Belarusian outfit BATE Borisov. Barcelona cruised past a stubborn Apoel Nicosia 1-0, and Ajax fought PSG to a 1-1 standstill.

Next up, Europa League, then the weekend fixtures. Looking forward to Man City vs Chelsea.

Yeah, the collective sigh among Arsenal fans when the signing was announced always had at least a partial justification, and this just proved them right. That being said, Welbeck was the least of Arsenal's problems on the night; their midfield were ineffective, and their defensive options were paper-thin. Szczesny really shouldn't have been as busy as he was.

Oh well, yay for "winning" the fourth place "trophy" for another season, right?

Good stuff from Arsenal, grabbing three goals in 6 minutes to sink a sometimes-dangerous Aston Villa. Welbeck didn't miss his chance, Oezil proved he's not a zombie after all, and suddenly all is right with the world, and there is no stress or worry. Right.

Newcastle were 2-0 down with 20 minutes to go, before Papiss Cisse single-handedly rescues them to finish 2-2. Alan Pardew smiles as he watches on from the execution block. Southampton are still angry, and this time they took it out on Swansea. Please remind me to never ****** off a South-Coaster. Finally, West Ham score two goals in the first 7 minutes of the game to ambush Liverpool 3-1. Next weekend's Merseyside Derby just got a lot more interesting.

To La Liga. Ronaldo! Rodriguez! Bale! Hernandez! Why am I shouting the star names in the Real Madrid line-up? I'm not. They're just the goal scorers in the 8-2 thrashing of Deportivo de La Coruna. Atletico were cruising 2-1 against Celta Vigo, before a bone-headed challenge saw them drop 2 points. Finally, in Serie A, in the season's first big-name clash, Tevez and Pogba combined to wreak havoc on AC Milan, as Juventus stroll to a 1-0 win. Meanwhile, Torres came on in the second half to reprise his award-winning role of the Invisible Man. Some things never change.

Man City vs Chelsea tomorrow. I'm hyped.

Man Utd lost after having a 2 goal lead for the first time ever in the Premier League as they went down 5-3 to newly promoted Leicester. :o

In the 2013-14 season Moyes got 7 points from his first 5 league games, losing to Liverpool and Man City in the process. Van Gaal has 5 points from his first 5 league games, losing to Swansea and Leicester - add the 4-0 humiliation meted out to them by MK Dons in the League Cup and this is unequivocally a far worse start to a campaign than that managed by Moyes last year.

With a poorly organised defence populated by inexperienced youngsters and mediocrities it'll be interesting to see just how many goals they concede once they actually meet some high quality opposition.

Twelve! No, wait, thirteen!

The Leicester vs Man United game was crazy. Looking dangerous on the ball, brilliantly chipping over Schmeichel and getting a slightly accidental assist, it looked like this was going to be another episode of the Angel Di Maria Show, as Man United built a 3-1 lead. Then the madness started; the referee awarded a penalty, which Nugent converted. Leicester followed that up with two more goals from open play as Man United's defence buckled like a wall made of celery. The Blackett red card and subsequent penalty sealed United's fate.

This game demonstrates why the Falcao signing didn't make sense to me; suddenly you got three star strikers you dare not bench, which is why Van Gaal played 4-3-3 on the day, and with Blind playing DMF, Man United was essentially operating with a 2-man centre midfield. Any team with a decent pair of wingers or a more muscular midfield could run right past them, which Leicester eventually did. Meanwhile, United's defensive options remain neglected, and it's about to get worse now that Jones is still out and Evans has gone back to visit his old friend the treatment room. The only thing worse than Man United's defending on the day was the refereeing; the first penalty decision was officiating at its most diabolical, and even the second penalty had a tinge of controversy about it.

On to Man City vs Chelsea, which for long while wasn't as great as I had hoped. It more resembled a fistfight than a game of football, with nine yellow cards in total, two of which was copped by Zabaleta. Then Schurrle scored deep in the second half, and that set up a frantic finish that more lived up to the billing, with Lampard equalizing against his old club and almost scoring a winner for his new one. He got a classy reception from the away fans.

Tottenham 0-1 West Brom was one of those games where the scoreline didn't tell the whole story. Both teams showed plenty of enterprise, just lacking a bit of cutting edge. Tottenham in particular seemed content to just pass the ball to death. Congratulations, Tottenham, you've become Arsenal. Lastly, Everton suffered a bad case of deja vu; losing by the exact same scoreline (2-3) to the exact same opposition (Crystal Palace) at the exact same venue (Goodison Park).

In La Liga, Messi racked up two assists and a goal for his collection as Barcelona destroy Levante 5-0. In Serie A, Roma beat Cagliari 2-0. Florenzi really loves his grandma.

Finally, Liverpool may have lost in the weekend, but Mario Balotelli did deliver yet another exploitable photo gem. Oh, Mario, don't ever change.

Right, League Cup midweek, then Derby Weekend. First, Liverpool vs Everton in another edition of the Merseyside Derby, then Arsenal vs North London B- ...I mean, Tottenham.

To begin for this weekend, here's another from the “Holy crap, did you see that?” file: Tuesday in the League Cup, Liverpool vs Middlesbrough. Liverpool scored first, before Middlesbrough equalized to force extra time. Liverpool then went ahead again, but Boro, being the stubborn bunch that they are, forced a penalty off a defensive mistake and equalized again in the third minute of stoppage in extra time. Finally, after a 30-kick penalty shoot-out, where both teams sent their goalkeepers and one of them even went to their reserve keeper to take the spot kick, Liverpool won 14-13 on penalties. Wild.

Derby Day, or should it be Ridiculous Goals Day? Jagielka (Everton), Pelle (Southampton) and Austin (QPR), take a bow. Damn. Man City rode the roller coaster, going two goals up against Hull before being pegged back to 2-2, before scoring two more to finish 4-2. Lampard proves he still got it, and probably shouldn't be playing in the MLS. Rooney had a busy day; scoring an early goal before mistaking Stewart Downing for a ball and seeing red, leaving his team to cling on for a 2-1 win over West Ham. Chelsea thumped Aston Villa 3-0; Costa is unstoppable.

Finally, the North London Derby. Arsenal showed us what they're all about; dominant in possession, ineffectual in finishing, punished for an error as a result. Only after being a goal down down did they rally madly to finish 1-1. Welbeck? Best. Miss. Ever. Injuries galore as Arteta and Ramsey limped off the field. Ah, some things never change - at least Diaby is back. Overall, a good derby.

Phew! I need a break.
