West Ham is absolutely lethal right now and especially at home one should be afraid of facing them. It's a question of time before they start dropping points and lose stupid games but for now Big Sam got a team that really is worhy of fighting against the top teams of the league. Even Caroll managed to score today!

Genoa have beaten AC Milan 1-0, and Barcelona are currently trailing Espanyol 1-0 at the Nou Camp. Madness.
Update: Normality returns. Barcelona leading 3-1.

West Ham's surprise-package season continues, as they beat Swansea 3-1. After Wilfried Bony, who Sam Allardyce passed up on signing, gave Swansea an early lead, 6'4" man-mountain Andy Carroll (the guy Sam signed instead of Bony) scored two headers to knock the Welsh side on their heels. Sakho added a third after Fabianski collected a harsh red. West Ham move to 3rd on the table, with Southampton vs Man United still to play on Monday.
In La Liga, whatever Ronaldo can do, Messi can also do - and he doesn't need to dive like a friggin' submarine to do it. After Sergio "not the golfer" Garcia gave Espanyol a shock early lead, Messi turned on the magic to bag his 21st La Liga hat-trick. Pique and Pedro added their own singles to complete a comprehensive 5-1 win. Just a quick note aside on Granada 1-1 Valencia; Granada's equalizer was scored by a substitute player - a guy by the name of Isaac Success. I just can't make this up.
Meanwhile, it's been a tough day for the proud city of Milan in the Serie A, as AC Milan lose to Genoa 1-0, while a piece of brilliance from Bruno Fernandes and a defensive howler saw Inter Milan give up a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1 to Udinese. Finally, Landon Donovan got the swansong he deserves, as Robbie Keane's extra time winner gave the L.A. Galaxy the MLS Cup title. Well done, mate, enjoy your retirement.
Anyway, after the weekend's games, here's how things now stand:
I'm still experimenting with how often I'm going to update these tables at the moment, so next weekend I'll be trying something different. Also, I've decided to replace Bundesliga with Ligue 1, starting Saturday.
Next up, Southampton vs Manchester United on Monday, then final round of Champions League group games.

With Chelsea losing to Newcastle the title race will survive at least past christmas which is rather nice but I can't see Chelsea losing the first spot in the long run. The excitement is more about what teams will follow Chelsea and City into next years Champions league and the relegation struggle to see who learn to not screw everything up. Tonights game between Southampton and United can end either way but a draw wouldn't surprise me at all given the current strength of both teams.
La Liga is probably the league where things can change the most depending on daily form and such and it's rather welcome given the status of a few title races all over Europe. It's impossible at the moment to tell where the title will go but that Atletíco most likely wont defend their title is rather clear and them winning it once is a remarkable but defending a title is always much harder.
Serie A just look more and more like someone at random changed spots on several teams with former giants being found spread out. Juventus is the strongest team and I'm more curious on how long Roma can keep up. So far they are doing very well at that so the title shouldn't end up in Turin until late this spring. I would be glad to see Juventus drop the it all but that squad is a bit too complete for that to happen without any extreme events.
Bundesliga, Bayern wins everything and nothing change.
Ligue 1, the league is still not that impressive and a lot of the competition to the title comes down to Ibrahimovic being out for so long that PSG clearly suffered a lot. Marseille is far too unstable to really pose a solid threat but for now the league look more interesting than Bundesliga however long this last. But we do see a Lyon being born anew so perhaps they can in the future change things up once again

A true United performance! Not spectacular nor really impressive at all but 3 points is what the old United would get from this kind of game and the current United has shown that they also can do it more than once in the same season. That said someone really should check the water at Carrington because this is just ridiculous how not a single match can go by without a player having to quit the game. Persie score two solid goals and De Gea keep showing just why he easily should guard the Spanish goal in the many years to come.

Can someone explain to me the significance of being promoted or relegated, other than just the level of competition. I take it that if you are promoted you perhaps receive a greater share of non attendance revenues? (TV, merchandise etc) Also I was looking at the English league standings and the lowest level appears to be something called 'Conference Premier' are all of these players full time pros or in the lowest leagues part timers and such?

Revenues is a big difference. Sponsorship and TV especially. Playing against bigger teams at home will attract a larger crowd too. Also getting a high position in the top division can earn you a spot in one of the two European leagues... of course, pretty much everyone only count the Champions League anyway.
League names can be a bit tricky in England as they tend to change names depending on who will sponsor the division... but I think "Football Conference" is the last league that is considered to be a professional league. Not everyone is on a pro contract there though as far as I know.
From Wikipedia:
"The Football Conference is a football league in England consisting of three divisions, the Conference, Conference North and Conference South. Around half the Conference clubs are fully professional, whilst most Conference North and Conference South clubs are semi-professional. The professional clubs are usually clubs who have been in the Football League in the past as opposed to those who have always been in 'Non-League'."

You couldn't make up this guy's name either really.
I'll always be a little disappointed that Ciro Immobile is a striker instead of a hard-tackling defender or a shot-stopping ace goalkeeper.
Southampton vs Man United. Koeman vs Van Gaal. I'm almost surprised they didn't put raw meat in each other's shoes, or hide drawing pins in their palms during the hand-shake, let alone come to blows like Wenger and Mourinho almost did earlier in the season. Here's a little background on these bitter Dutch rivals. Basically, Koeman was Van Gaal's assistant at Barcelona, then Koeman went to manage Ajax while Van Gaal became technical director. Van Gaal couldn't resist being a meddling busybody, so Koeman got him fired. They've hardly been on speaking terms since.
As for the game, Southampton were clearly superior for much of it; they had 52% possession and 15 shots to 3, and United's defensive partnership of McNair and Smalling looked shaky throughout. But in what is becoming a familiar pattern this season for United, De Gea once again put in a towering performance to save their bacons, and a moment or two of excellence from the front-line players ensure United walk away with three points in the bag and smiles on their faces. This time, it was Van Persie's turn, scoring both goals in a 2-1 win. Even Van Gaal thought United were lucky to win.
Here are the final weekend tables, with the Southampton vs Man United result and all Monday La Liga and Serie A games included:
It's round-to-round position changes at the moment; I'll be trying day-to-day this weekend. Bundesliga played all of their games since Sunday, so I took the opportunity to replace it with Ligue 1 early. Also, as you can see, more tinkering. I like to tinker.
Right, to Champions League. Groups A to D will finish up tonight with Juventus vs Atletico Madrid, Liverpool vs Basel, Monaco vs Zenit St Petersburg, Galatasaray vs Arsenal and Dortmund vs Anderlecht. Oh, and I've finally made my Champions League tables readable without safety goggles:
Here's what the teams playing tonight need: Juventus need a point to qualify for the knock-out stage, but will miss out if they lose and Olympiakos win. A point for Basel will also be enough for them, while Liverpool need to win. Monaco vs Zenit is a straight shoot-out for the second Round of 16 spot, with Monaco needing at least a draw. Group D is pretty much settled, but Arsenal can top the group if they beat Galatasaray and Dortmund lose to Anderlecht. Should be good.

In England the difference between the Premier League and Championship is about £30m+ a season(well it used to be, it's probably a lot bigger now. I think I read £60m) in TV revenue alone. Plus playing in the top divisions gives you a chance of attracting better players, bigger crowds and getting into continental competitions which can get you another £30m+ just for competing in the group stages. So getting promoted is a big deal and can keep a struggling club afloat for a few years with the revenue of that season alone.
It's slightly different in other leagues though that don't split the TV money evenly(like in Spain, Real and Barca get way more than everyone else) and nowhere else makes as much TV money as in England. But the principle is the same, more money, prestige and a chance at better things. It's a bit like a player being promoted from the AHL/CHL to the NHL.
Also Max Power is the real name to watch out for.

It's funny how Man United comes victorious out of each field with its crappy playing.
If they hadn't beaten Dortmund, I would say It's too good to be true Arsenal becoming 1st in his group.

In fairness United have played well and lost matches too. There's no telling what you're going to get with us, we can't seem to get the same team out more than once or twice in a row before 3 or 4 of them are injured. The only thing you know you're going to get watching United now is that someone will get injured and at some point during the match we will look utterly clueless, against Southampton the cluelessness lasted 90 minutes. It's amazing we are 3rd despite the 40+ injuries suffered this season, but it's hardly bloody surprising either, we have had massive injury problems for about 3 or 4 years now. There's clearly something very wrong.
Having to replace injured players is actually costing us the chance to bring on players that need a bit of match fitness. It's gotten ridiculous.

They've gotten to a ridiculous level this year. I mean we are used to injured players by now especially in the defence. But with Rio gone one would assume 50% of the injuries would be gone but heck no!
Rather curious on just how good the team is once the same players get to play at least 90 min together. Should start there and maybe hope for 2 matches at some point

Arsenal 2-0 up after 10 minutes. Podolski and Ramsey. Looks like game over already. I hope.
Update: Oooh. Basel just scored. Rodgers' quest to become "folklore" is not going well.

How many seasons in a row has this happened now? Every year at some point we end up with Carrick in defence and either an untried teenager or someone who isn't a defender playing beside him. I recall at one point we had Berbatov playing in defence. I like Rafael, Smalling, Jones and Evans but they simply can't be relied on to stay fit and at least 3 of them need replaced now. It's gone on for too long.
We are finding a way to win, which is a good sign that we will be fine if we can ever get everyone fit. I don't think LVG has a clue what his best team is yet. We should start with trying to get the same team that started the match to start the second half. RVP seems to be indestructible now oddly enough, he survived a murder attempt last night from Mane.
Basel 1-0 up at Anfield.

At least 3 years now. I recall one away game against West Ham a while back when our defence was Valencia-Carrick-Fletcher-Evra... Evra was the only defender that really never got injured. Wish he'd told the other plays how.. I can understand one season but this is as you say a common thing with United and really is unacceptable.
As long as the team get 3 points I'm "alright" but this can't be allowed to continue. Especially not with how vital De Gea has become lately. Him out for a month and I'll have nightmares each night. At least RVP can survive anything at this point, not sure how he didn't get genuinly hurt by Mane. Maybe he should spend time with our defenders now..

It's only a matter of time until we see a defence of Fletcher-Carrick-RVP. Hopefully Smalling will be back for Sunday and maybe Di Maria. Young and Valencia have done well at wing-back, so no real hurry with Shaw and Rafael.
Liverpool have been absolutely dire so far. Basle are brushing them aside with ease. They look like they haven't got a clue what they are supposed to be doing.

Liverpool had Markovic sent off for poking someone in the eye. He looked and then he swung his arm, I dunno what the hell he was trying to do with his hand so high. Ridiculous thing to get sent off for, but he didn't give the ref a lot of choice.
Going back to United's injuries, Nani barely stayed fit for 2 years. Goes on loan and hasn't missed a match except for one cup match he was rested for.
