1-1 Gerrard with an excellent freekick and £225 for Druss. Now if Basle could just kindly and hilariously score a late winner all would be right in the world.

WTH! I just wanted to watch the first half of the boring Juventus 0-0  Atletico Madrid, and when I woke up the match was finished!

Nice work by Arsenal (Ramsey and Podolski), Real Madrid and Olympiakos.

Good night

No Sanchez, no Giroud, no... ...problem? A fine win by Arsenal after the abject loss to Stoke, as Podolski and Ramsey each scored two goals in a 4-1 win. Truth be told, Galatasaray were poor; they've conceded 15 goals over 5 CL games heading into last night's fixtures - only BATE Borisov have conceded more, and it showed. Also, it was ultimately a meaningless victory, as the 1-1 draw between Dortmund and Anderlecht meant Arsenal finished second in Group D; they'll be sure to regret the 3-3 draw against Anderlecht in November once they get beaten up by Real Madrid, Bayern Munich or Barcelona in the next round. But that's in the future. For now, I'm going to enjoy this Aaron Ramsey half-volley stunner. I can't stop watching it. What a great goal. Podolski's tight-angled blaster was pretty damn good, too.

Elsewhere, Liverpool's return to the Champions League limped to its conclusion as they conceded in a poor first-half performance. Lazar Markovic was subbed on at half-time, but made Liverpool's night worse 15 minutes later when he was sent off for poking Behrang Safari in the eye. Gerrard rallied with a sublime free-kick, but the game ended 1-1. Basel later kindly reminded us of their recent history with English teams. Liverpool will now play in the Europa League, after Real Madrid recorded their 19th win in a row in all competitions, beating 10-man Ludogorets 4-0.

Juventus vs Atlético Madrid was agony to the eyes and the football-loving souls of every football fans everywhere; Juventus seemed content to grind out a 0-0 draw - and Atlético seemed content to enable them. The result meant Olympiakos's chaotic 4-2 win over Malmö FF was all for naught. Monaco scored only their 3rd and 4th goals of the competition, as they beat Zenit St. Petersburg to top Group C, after Bayer Leverkusen could only manage a 0-0 draw with the eliminated Benfica.

It's the turn of Groups E to H tonight: Roma vs Man City, Bayern Munich vs CSKA Moscow, Barcelona vs Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea vs Sporting Lisbon, Schalke vs NK Maribor. Here's what the teams playing tonight need:

Group E: Man City need a win or a score draw and for CSKA Moscow to lose. CSKA need to beat Bayern, and hope Roma draw or lose to Man City. If both games end in draws, Roma will qualify.

Both Group F games are straight shoot-outs for group top spot and Europa League, respectively, with PSG and Ajax needing only draws for their respective prizes.

Group G: Sporting Lisbon need a draw or a win over Chelsea to qualify. Schalke must beat Maribor and hope Chelsea beat Sporting. Maribor can qualify for Europa League if they beat Schalke.

Group H is already settled, with only Athletic Bilbao vs BATE Borisov to decide who get the Europa League spot.

A goal each to Ibrahimovic and Messi. Barca vs PSG is heating up.

Bayern are leading CSKA. All focus now on Rome.

Chelsea ripping Sporting apart. They'd better hope Schalke don't score.

Update: What a goal from Nasri! Exactly what this game need - now Roma have to win.

Update 2: And now Schalke have scored. Bad news for Sporting.

City finally managed to not screw it all up!

No upsets macking it through these groupstages which is a bit boring but hardly surprising. Now the true Champions league can finally start

In fairness United have played well and lost matches too. There's no telling what you're going to get with us, we can't seem to get the same team out more than once or twice in a row before 3 or 4 of them are injured. The only thing you know you're going to get watching United now is that someone will get injured and at some point during the match we will look utterly clueless, against Southampton the cluelessness lasted 90 minutes. It's amazing we are 3rd despite the 40+ injuries suffered this season, but it's hardly bloody surprising either, we have had massive injury problems for about 3 or 4 years now. There's clearly something very wrong.

Having to replace injured players is actually costing us the chance to bring on players that need a bit of match fitness. It's gotten ridiculous.

Southampton should have won that match, if only because I like Koeman way better than Van Gaal.. But they were the better team and deserved to win, now they have lost 3 matches in a row and have to be careful not to continue that streak.

I will say what I always said about Van Gaal; when he comes in, players get injured. It happend with AZ, with the Dutch Team and now at United. So either he has really, really bad luck or the way he wants the player to train gets them injured.

I just hope he can control himself and don't spend all of the 200 million he will be granted to buy new players during the winter on midfielders and forwards while he desperately needs good backs.

In the Champions League, Ajax won 4-.0 over Apoel Nicosia. The first half was horrible to watch without so much as a chance on either end. Ajax got really lucky as they were wrongfully granted a penalty just before half time. The second half was better but mostly because Apoel didn't believe they could win anymore and just basicly gave up..

Meanwhile Liverpool is pissed off on Kuipers for sending off Markovic, claiming they would have won the match otherwise. If they are at this level of pity responses they have bigger problems than one player, correctly, given a red card..

For the first time in 10 years we will have 3 Dutch teams in the Europa League. And though many people don't give a crap about it, I reckon Feyenoord believes otherwise. Plus PSV and Ajax should be lucky to play in the Europa League, there they actually have a chance to win some matches..

And meanwhile in the Dutch competition, we won!! A 1-0 away victory that meant the first victory in 3 months and even more for morale. Even though this bad period, with some soft protest actions, each home match the stadium largely sold out with 18.000 people (which in The Netherlands equals to the 7th highest attendence for a team that is currently 17th). The match wasn't good but there was spirit, determination and hard work for the first time in a looong while and as a reward 400 supporters were waiting on the parking lot of our stadium for the player bus to come home at 01.30 with fireworks and chants: https://www.youtube....h?v=i7UTjMmbKXw

Kimosabe, I'm wondering if you have any opinion about the four Dutch players in Newcastle United. Tim Krul, Vurnon Anita, Siem de Jong and Daryl Janmaat?

I really like Krul, if it were up to me he would be the first keeper of the Dutch team

Siem de Jong was a good player in The Netherlands but he hasn't really been able to prove himself with his injuries. When he recovers he can be a good player for Newcastle

I never really thought highly of Janmaat. He was a decent enough player for Feyenoord but he seems that moving to England has done him good and he is playing pretty good now.

Anita simply isn't good enough, not really much else to say about him

Gutsy win from Man City, who were without their key players Aguero, Toure and Kompany. We've always known they have class and skill by the bucketloads, but this game and the previous game against Everton showed they have some grit too. Roma had early chances, and caused a couple of goal-mouth scrambles late on after Nasri scored, but Hart was like a brick wall; making a string of great saves. Nasri scored a scorcher in the second half, then set up Zabaleta's goal to seal the deal. After starting the midweek at bottom of Group E, City are through after Bayern Munich recorded a routine 3-0 win over CSKA Moscow.

After Ibrahimovic exploited a defensive lapse to put PSG on a early lead, the Barcelona attacking trident of Messi, Neymar and Suarez responded to seal Barca's 3-1 win and finish top of Group F. Great goal by Neymar. It's been a great midweek for goals. Ajax scored 3 second half goals to beat Apoel Nicosia to grab the Europa League spot. Jose Mourinho showed no mercy to his Portuguese compatriots, as Chelsea put Sporting's hopes of qualification to the sword with a slick 3-1 win, while Schalke's 1-0 win over NK Maribor sealed their fate. Athletic Bilbao beat BATE Borisov 2-0 to qualify for Europa League.

So, to recap, the teams that qualified for Champions League Round of 16:

Group Winners: Atlético Madrid, Real Madrid, Monaco, Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Chelsea, Porto.
Group Runners-up: Juventus, FC Basel, Bayer Leverkusen, Arsenal, Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, Schalke 04, Shakhtar Donestk.

That's 4 from Germany, 3 from England, 3 from Spain, 2 from France, and 1 each from Italy, Portugal, Switzerland and Ukraine. Well done, Bundesliga.

Coming up, Europa League, then weekend fixtures.

Krul was really good a few seasons ago. I'd say he was close to be regarded as world class. He's gone backwards in my eyes since then. Flaps a bit too much on crosses and corners and his kicking is terrible.

Some have described Siem as a better Kevin Nolan... doesn't sound very accurate and definitely not very flattering. Will Pardew be able to use him in the right way? The only match he's played so far (against Aston Villa) it passed him completely by.

Janmaat was struggling a bit at the start of the season. He looks a bit like Mathieu Debuchy now, just not as rash in the tackle. He's been good recently though, I agree.

I think Anita would be good enough in the right team with the right way of playing. He was very useful when he played in a midfield trio with Tioté and Cabaye. But since we play mostly long balls and he's only expected to run around and win balls I feel he gets judged mostly on that. A role that is too weak to play.

Otherwise I think he is an intelligent football player who would benefit more on playing in a team that passes the ball around more.

First, Thursday's Europa League. Did anyone see the Beşiktaş vs Tottenham match? It was interrupted twice by floodlight outages, so the fans forked out their phones and turned it into a rock concert. Ha. Classic. Beşiktaş won 1-0. Here are the teams who have qualified for the Europa League Round of 32:

Group winners: Borussia Mönchengladbach (GER), Club Brugge (BEL), Beşiktaş (TUR), Red Bull Salzburg (AUT), Dynamo Moscow (RUS), Inter Milan (ITA), Feyenoord (NED), Everton (ENG), Napoli (ITA), Dynamo Kyiv (UKR), Fiorentina (ITA), Legia Warsaw (POL)
Group runners ups: Villarreal (ESP), Torino (ITA), Tottenham Hotspur (ENG), Celtic (SCO), PSV Eindhoven (NED), Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk (UKR), Sevilla (ESP), Wolfsburg (GER), Young Boys (SUI), Aalborg (DEN), Guingamp (FRA), Trabzonspor (TUR)
From Champions League: Olympiakos (GRE), Liverpool (ENG), Zenit St Petersburg (RUS), Anderlecht (BEL), Roma (ITA), Ajax (NED), Sporting CP (POR), Athletic Bilbao (ESP)

5 from Italy, 3 from Netherlands, 3 from England, 3 from Spain, 2 from Germany, 2 from Belgium, 2 from Turkey, 2 from Russia, 2 from Ukraine, and 1 each from Austria, Poland, Scotland, Switzerland, Denmark, France, Greece and Portugal. Congratulations... ...Italy? The draw for both Champions League and Europa League knock-out stage will be on December 15th.

Right, to some bits and pieces before the games. The Daily Express is reporting that, after witnessing Fernando Torres score just 1 goal in 9 games, AC Milan are ready to say "Er, thanks for the loan, but you can have him back now" to Chelsea. Since then, however, the Daily Mirror is reporting that Chelsea have already said "Nah, we're good" to Milan, so Milan are now so desperate they're offering him to any English club - for free. Ah, Fernando Torres; the £50 million punchline that keeps on giving.

Also, Sergio Aguero will be out for 4 to 6 weeks after picking up a knee ligament injury in the game against Everton, which means the hectic December-January fixtures are going to be a real test of character of Man City. Meanwhile, Gary Neville has likened Sunday's Man United vs Liverpool to a game between two pubs. Come on, Gary, I know sometimes they can be mistaken for 22 drunks tripping over each other trying to figure out which one of the balls they're supposed to chase, but the pub football scene is not THAT bad.

Finally, here's a little something QPR unleashed on YouTube to get us in the Christmas mood:

OhGodohGodpleasemakeitstop!

Leicester vs Man City, Chelsea vs Hull and Arsenal vs Newcastle tonight, while Barcelona are in action in La Liga. Ronaldo scored two goals as Real Madrid warmed up with a 4-1 win at Almeria on Friday before they hop on a plane to Morocco, while Lyon beat Caen 3-0. Here's how things stand with both results included:

Tables131214.png

Just a note on Serie A: Parma were deducted a point penalty for failing to pay player wages.

I'd rather play with 10 men than have Torres on the pitch because he's just bound to disappoint and most likely demoralize the entire team. What a sad state for a once incredible striker.

Now I didn't watch the games themself from EL but the highlights were from most games quite entertaining and one just has to appreciate the Besiktas fans for dealing with those blackouts and swap it out for something that will be talked about around europe for a short while at least.

It will be interesting if any English team will actually take EL serious for the first time since Hodgson took Fulham of all teams to the finals. I can understand the lack of serious effort but it's a European trophy at the end and most of these teams are lucky if they even get close to one each decade.

City without Augero might be a tiger without claws due to how vital he has turned out to be for their offensive this season. Now City really has to show everyone that even without their most lethal striker that they still can prove to be a threat to all kinds of defences. Sad though for them to lose him now with the schedule becoming insanely tense up until the start of January. Going to be amazing as a fan but the players, almost pity a few of them but them millions might do a better job than us.

QPR.. why

No contest really. Pardew went back to default and thought graft would have a chance against talent.

Seriously, why does he persist with throwing Gouffran on the wing who offers nothing or Dummet as a left back when he is only good in the centre?

Good stuff from Arsenal, beating Newcastle, who looked like a shell of the team that beat Chelsea. Giroud was a menace throughout, and scored two goals, while Santi Cazorla bagged the other two. Happy birthday, Santi. 4-1 in Turkey and now 4-1 at the Emirates - very pleasing response after the Stoke game. Long may it continue.

Chelsea Football Club presents... ...Swan Lake? The table toppers beat 10-man Hull 2-0 with goals from Hazard and Costa, but there was controversy as Willian and Costa were both booked for diving, while Gary Cahill was lucky to not be sent off for the same offence. With Dzeko picking up an injury during warm-up, Man City literally ran out of strikers, forcing them to once again guts out a 1-0 win over Leicester. Lampard scored his 175th Premier League goal, equalling Thierry Henry - will Mourinho regret letting him go? In La Liga, Barcelona suffered a blow to their title challenge, as Getafe held them to a 0-0 draw in pouring rain.

After yesterday's results, here are the tables:

Tables141214.png

Tonight, we have Man United vs Liverpool, Atlético Madrid vs Villareal in La Liga, and a Serie A top-4 clash in Roma vs Genoa. Juventus vs Sampdoria is currently 1-1.

Edit: Whoops! I made an error in the Ligue 1 table, which I noticed too late to change as I've already locked the tables down in anticipation of today's changes. The position change for Metz should read -2.

Juventus vs Sampdoria finished 1-1. Can Roma finally, finally exploit the opportunity?

Man United vs Liverpool is under way. Rodgers dropped Mignolet, while United suffered yet another defensive injury blow in Rojo.

Edit: Rooney just scored. 1-0 United.

United started the first half really awkwardly and once again De Gea was called to save the team twice before Rooney did what I doubt anyone in the Premier League can do better and put United ahead. The defence is really sketchy but has grown better over time and while almost all of the cards are justified against United I'm not too worried about going down to 10 players just yet. Really only the Evans yellow card that I can't accept but whatever any unfairness that might've been shown towards United has been more than covered up by Mata scoring 2-0 from obvious offside. Goodness that one is just painful to watch even if my team is to gain from it

I genuinly don't even want to know what United would be without De Gea. While 3-0 sound like United were a lot better that really was not the case. United was the better team due to better finishes and De Gea that might soon apply for godhood because he's being without a doubt the best player in the current United squad. United once again showcased a defence that could make anyone fall into despair and it really need to become less common. Fellaini did another genuinly solid match and I lost count how many times he won the ball. Young might even have a decent claim on the left decence because he's probably the most stable defender this season and that was not something I thought would be the case. Well done United, well done!

Liverpool is just not even fun to look at right now. So much didn't work at all today and while they on a normal keeper would've scored a few goals it's really sad to see them be this hollow and not to even mention "Super Mario" I was overjoyed to see him enter the pitch at half time and while he did push De Gea to prove his divine skills I'd say most of the second half Liverpool played with 10 men.

Titanic. Epic. Colossal. Legendary. And no, I'm talking about the game. It was a predictably catastrophic performance from Liverpool in a 3-0 defeat to Man United, but De Gea's performance in goal continue to be worth the price of admission alone. He is undoubtedly Man United's best player at the moment, though Rooney also put in a very good shift yesterday.

As for Liverpool, things seem to be coming apart at the seams, with the latest word being that Mignolet has been dropped indefinitely. Truth be told, a goalkeeper for a top side shouldn't really be kept that busy; Van Gaal seems to be employing a high-risk, high-reward strategy of throwing the attacking kitchen sink at his opposition and hope De Gea doesn't have an off day. It could yet backfire, but for now, United are comfortably 3rd on the table and on 6 wins in a row.

Elsewhere, the news just keep getting better for Real Madrid; the day after Barcelona dropped points at Getafe, Atlético Madrid lost at home for the first time in the season, going down to Villareal 1-0. In Serie A, Roma finally made Juventus pay for dropping points, beating Genoa 1-0 to close the gap to 1 point. Finally, Ligue 1's top 2 lost on the same day, as relegation-threatened Guingamp upset Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco beat Marseille, both by 1-0.

Tables:

Tables151214.png

Right, Champions League Draw is out. Here's who's playing who:

Paris Saint-Germain vs Chelsea
Manchester City vs Barcelona
Bayer Leverkusen vs Atlético Madrid
Juventus vs Borussia Dortmund
Schalke 04 vs Real Madrid
Shakhtar Donetsk vs Bayern Munich
Arsenal vs Monaco (Phew!)
FC Basel vs Porto

Poor Man City; one year later, same opponents, same stage, same getting screwed by the seedings despite being one of the stronger teams.

It's a quiet midweek this week, with the Premier League taking a quick breather before the Christmas Chaos. Copa del Rey second legs is on, but I don't anticipate any interesting results. I'll be back Saturday.
