Abandon all hope? Apparently not! First time in a while an Arsenal game has given me true, genuine joy. It was a complete performance; disciplined and impenetrable in defence, energetic in midfield, and ruthlessly opportunistic in attack. Cazorla was brilliant and everywhere, Bellerin and Coquelin looked remarkably comfortable playing at this level, and Ospina might just be ready to keep Szczesny on the bench permanently. Apparently this is Arsenal's first away win against the reigning English champions since 2002, and my worry is that this might make Wenger complacent in the transfers, but so far he's making all the right noises. Overall, a happy 2-0 win all round at the Etihad.

La Liga. 3-0 Real Madrid, 4-0 Barcelona, 2-0 Atletico Madrid, Ronaldo scored a brace, Messi scored a hat-trick. Routine, routine, routine. In Serie A, Juve's Massimiliano Allegri joins Mourinho as the two happiest men in Europe, as his side's 4-0 win over Verona mean they both finish the weekend with 5-point leads in their respective leagues.

Arsenal proved yesterday that the world is seriously out of balance by actually.. winning against a top team. I'd single out Cazorla and Coquellin as the two reasons why Arsenal failed to lose! Very good performance from the team but those two really did right about everything right and made City look rather static and unable to get things done.

Hopefully Arsenal realise their error and keep losing against top teams because them winning against them must be a breach of the natural order of things!

I jest of course, glad for Arsenal to finally do what they should do way more often against City and Chelsea  ;)

Yeah, you can bet I'm going to be savouring this one for as long as I can, because if Wenger has anything in abundance, it's bad habits and his stubborn adhesion to them.

Lolwut?!! :o :o

Both Japan and Iran failed to go to the next round in Asian Cup, defeated by UAE and Iraq in the penalties.

Japan 1 (4) - 1 (5) UAE

Iran 3 (6) - 3 (7) Iraq

Great game by Iran ruined by referee giving a red card to its striker. With 11 players Iran would win.

http://us.soccerway....CID=HP_MS_08_01

Then I found out good players like Kagawa and Honda screwed up the penalties just like Hajsafi:

http://us.soccerway..../?ICID=PL_MS_04

Oh it's been quite bad luck for Japan.

Japan - UAE

19 Corners 0

8 Shots on target 2
18 Shots wide 0
17 Fouls 15
2 Offsides 1

At the end all above teams are very good ones.

And the Remaining 4 teams are: Australia, South Korea, Iraq and UAE

Manchester United just drew 0-0 with Cambridge (respect and credit to them-- played so much better than United)... Van Gaal and his team need to wake up now.

No one likes Asian Cup?

I've been following it, but unfortunately only in passing - it's an insanely busy time in sports for me right now. The majority of my sporting attention is firmly fixed on the Aussie Open tennis, and even when I can spare some attention to football, I'm having to split between this, the African Cup of Nations, and of course regular European club football going on.

So, yeah, that's why I can't pay more attention to the Asian Cup. Great overhead from Cahill the other day, though.

I haven't watched many matches too. 3 of Iran matches and the last South Korea match.

Iran-Iraq match was a super cool one:

No. It's no Trojan, It doesn't have copy-right problems.

It is harmless to download and watch (the website doesn't use Youtube protocol, so the only way to watch it without going there is this way).

I got an ear to the ground for it but no team there actually interest me in the least. African cup of Nations just involve way more players and nations that I'm interested in watching.

I'll consider that game a charity to Cambridge so that they can come to Old Trafford and collect a few million. I gave up on watching the game itself after about an hour. Bad is too nice of a word for that performance

Japan, South Korea, Iran, Iraq, Australia and even UAE and China are currently good teams. They have the capability to beat European teams like Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Ireland and Denmark if they get their act together.

Out of those European teams only Bosnia would maybe be interesting to watch. Denmark is not at all what they were a couple of years ago. Ireland got amazing fans but their players are not even 10% as good as their fans. Serbia never seem to nail the final piece are just as likely to give top notch teams issues as they are to collapse against nobodies

If anything the last world cup really showcased just how far behind the Asian teams actually are

Japan and South Korea were great in 2010 world cup though.

Transfer news: Real Madrid have won the race to sign teen prodigy Martin Odegard. This kid's been linked with every club that's somebody in the football world, and has been compared to everyone from Messi to Ronaldo to friggin' Thor, son of Odin. Real are apparently paying this 16-year-old €100,000 a week, apparently because they're Real Madrid, so f*** you. In a less high-profile signing, Real have also snapped up Brazilian defender Lucas Silva.

Speaker of defenders, Arsene Wenger has openly admitted to Arsenal's interest in Villareal defender Gabriel Paulista. I've looked at the stats; this guy has the same aerial win rate as Mertesacker, and yet makes the same interception rate as Koscielny. Basically, he's a complete defender, so my only question is: what are Arsenal waiting for?

Anyway, it's FA Cup weekend in England, but leagues continue elsewhere. Tables and fixtures:

Tables240115b.png

FA Cup: Chelsea vs Bradford, Man City vs Middlesbrough, Southampton vs Crystal Palace, Liverpool vs Bolton
La Liga: Cordoba vs Real Madrid, Elche vs Barcelona, Atletico Madrid vs Rayo Vallecano

Man United played a lethargic 0-0 draw with Cambridge yesterday, while Swansea suffered today's first cupset, being reduced to 9 men before going down 3-1 to Blackburn. Cordoba vs Real Madrid are currently 1-1, Chelsea are 2-1 up, and it's raining goals in Southampton; who are 2-3 down.

Holy crap, Chelsea and Man City both lost. Crystal Palace also beat Southampton, and Leicester beat Tottenham. It's a cupsetpocalypse.

Real scraped through to a 2-1 win after Ronaldo got sent off.

Chelsea won 1-0 against Liverpool by a goal from the ever remarkable Ivanovic but what's really the big thing about the game is once again what a vile and disgusting player Diego Costa is. Obviously Mourinho is saying that he didn't mean to step on the Liverpool players but one would need to have their views firmly in Chelsea favor to believe that

I really disliked watching Atlético Madrid last season, because whenever I did so a significant number of their players constantly made ridiculously hard tackles with unnecessary violence in-between. They're still doing that and so is Costa-- the man is too combative for my liking. Disgusting.

Case in point... Atlético finished their Copa del Rey match against Barcelona with 9 players on the pitch today. Quite the fiery affair, with Barca winning 3-2 for a 4-2 aggregate victory.

I'm mostly having a very hard time wrapping my mind around the fact that Torres score goals and very early ones against both Real Madrid and Barcelona. It's almost unnatural..

So... I'm gone on holiday for a couple of months and this entire topic dies... I'm dissapointed in you, especially with plenty to talk about with the season endings and Champions League.

In The Netherlands Feyenoord threw away a 7 point lead in the race for the 3rd place that ensures Europa League football. Now the have to play play-offs to try to reach it.

In the last match of the normal competition Ajax showed its true face by losing to the, already relegated, Dordrecht

Sadly, we have to play play-offs for relegation but our last regular match was something to remember with a 4-5 goalfest.

Meanwhile in Germany, the chances that HSV will relegate increase by the weekend. They were unbelievalbly luck not to do so last year but it looks like their luck has run out, just as that big clock of their will soon.

In England our 3rd Dutch coach managed to keep Sunderland in the Premier League for another season while Southampton set a new record for the fastest hattrick in Premier League history.

In the Champions League Barcelona destroyed Bayern, who are really on a bad streak in the last months, both in Europe as in Germany and to my great joy, Juventus kicked out Real Madrid on sheer force of will.

And in 2 weeks the WC for Woman will begin in Canada which will be the first WC of our Orange Lionesses.

Suddenly in my mind: Different Methods... DIFFERENT METHODS... I could have used my own browser's history. *facepalm*

Probably been the most boring season in Premier League since I started watching back in early 2000 but that said there's still be things to be interested in like Newcastle showing just how deep the pit of awful actually can reach! Leicester pulling of a very impressive escape and earning themself another season in the top flight with games to spare was not on the map. Very good team so glad to have them up for more.

Chelsea, really the only team in England that got a genuinly good squad even if it can be quite improved. Not a surprise that they won the league in such dominating fashion as they did. City is too old, Arsenal is Arsenal, United is way to inconsistent and need a lot more work.

At least next season should be far more interesting with United back in the Champions league and both Arsenal and City being more aware of their issues. Hopefully Chelsea wont win as easy next year

Yeah... sorry about leaving this thread to die. It's a whole lot easier for me to focus on football between August and January, when the Southern rugby union season switches to the less hectic internationals phase, and the tennis finishes up its last Grand Slam by September and starts winding down.

Once it's late January, however, the Aussie Open fires up, Super Rugby kicks off soon after, and all Hell breaks loose. Just for this weekend, for example, I've got Chiefs vs Bulls kicking off in just over 6 hours, my beloved Crusaders are playing the Waratahs tomorrow, and the French Open gets under way on Sunday.

So... ...yeah. Busy busy busy. Again, sorry I couldn't be around. Oh, and yay for Arsenal pretty much finishing 3rd, in a season they looked to be stuffing big time.
