Let me try. The ref didn't like van Persie and was looking for an excuse to send him off; the ref didn't like Arsenal and didn't want them to have a chance of going through to the next round; someone from Barcelona had a 'chat' with the ref at half time (recalling what happened when Barcelona played Chelsea; funny how Chelsea were reprimanded when even officials seemed to confirm Barcelona personnel spoke to them at half time); the ref is a Barcelona fan; the ref had certain instructions from higher up...etc.

Warning: I did not claim any of those reasons to be true or credible.

Good chance that that really happend, sadly you see it way to often the last years, and the problem is that you can't prove anything, the ref was fully in his rights to give Van Persie that second yellow card, and i'm glad he did. (not because I don't like him but because it is a rule). Problem is that no ref is consistent these days, and with that they can decide a lot of matches. (exactly what we have seen here for the last few rounds)

And concering technology, you could have seen it coming from miles that the FIFA would reject every giving option, how good they might have been, the chance of having technology in football remains low as long as the FIFA remains the same. And refs will probably refuse to use it as well, as with the technology, you have prove that refs are wrong at lot and that they are very inconsistent

Druss99 wrote...
I dunno how much bringing in technology would
cost but maybe thats why FIFA are so set against it. Money, its the
thing that dictates everything they do these days

True, they have plenty money, the last WC was the best, qua income for the FIFA, ever (and I bet Africa didn't see much of that money, and with Russia and Qatar that record will not stand long). But the idea of spending money, even to improve a sport that they love (at least, they should), seems to scare into making the most irrational dissisions

Of course they should be implementing technology, Tennis, Cricket & Rugby all get a tiny fraction of the financial backing that football associations have at their disposal and they can implement it just fine.

There is zero excuse or validation for not having it in football whether it is goal line technology, deciding penalties or red card incidents. The Premier league, Serie A, la Liga, Bundesliga, Eredivise & Ligue 1 should have had the tech implemented years ago.

The game has utter morons in the upper echelons that do nothing for the benefit of the game, Sepp Blatter & Platini from a fandom POV make my blood boil, they go out of their way to ban wearing Snoods for god sake yet when a mistake is made at the highest level of the game they protect incompetence of match officials & hand out fines to anyone who doesn’t agree with their moronic decisions.

Get rid of these clowns, get someone with balls at the top who will make technology in the sport happen, nothing could benefit the game more.

FIFA could and should use technology; but we know they won't. I can understand the argument for the lower leagues or even grass roots, but why not at select levels like you mentioned Jiffasaurus. Or even international competitions; reserve it for something special?

Snoods. That's enough on that. *Cough*

I can't see Blatter being ousted myself. All those top people seem to support him, so it would take a major coup to replace him. I recall the last challenger got ruined but that could be due to my poor memory and overactive imagination.

I think you hit the nail on the head there Kimo. I don't believe anyone in the upper echelons of FIFA actually has any love for football other than as a cash cow. One thing about Platini even if he doesn't seem to know how to or isn't capable of fixing the wrongs in football atleast he gives the impression he cares. Atleast in his sometimes misguided way he is trying to do the right thing in some instances, like curbing the influence of rich owners and bringing in financial restrictions. The cynic in me says Real Madrid will still get away with the Spanish government bailing them out or giving them massive wads of cash but atleast he seems to be trying something.

It was Platini who brought in the extra refs behind the goal system didn't he? Its not perfect, its not what everyone wants and what everyone knows we need but its something atleast. Until the men in suits pushing paper are people who love the game, people who want to see fairness, honesty and integrity at the highest level then we are stuck with the way things are. I'd much rather have someone like Platini running the game, he isn't perfect and he doesn't always inspire confidence but atleast he isn't Blatter. I agree with OBaka that Blatter won't be ousted though, he will outlive us all too and football will still be the way it is when we are all dust.

One thing about the high profile ref problems that have been plaguing the game recently is that they need to attract young refs into the game. I believe they are having a hard enough time doing that as it is and things like this are making it worse, no one wants to take a job where they will get crucified by the media for a week if they make one mistake but get everything else 100% right. Refs need help, they aren't going to get everything right and the sooner FIFA acknowledges that and offers them some help the better.

On a different note it was great to see Shevchenko look something like his best tonight for Dynamo Kiev.

yup, agree with the bit about the refs. they really have a tough job, and talk about pressure and heat they get from the fans if they mess up. if you want to encourage refs to continue refereeing, why not provide them with at least the most rudimentary technology, like the goal line technoogy. you know pretty soon they might invent little things to stick on the boots which would be able to tell precisely if a player was on side or not, wouldn't that be something! (just throwing wood into the fire :)

*Heh*

Refs do have it tough. I don't think anyone disagrees with that. They get abuse from practically everyone. They have some power on the pitch to influence the behaviour that players show, but rarely, if ever, do they ever exercise it though.

If refs decide a true no tolerance policy towards swearing for example, I can imagine that would shake things up pretty quickly. Though we'll probably have a lot of abandoned matches as a result.

That stick idea...yeah. I'm pretty sure that environmental health and safety and various other safety departments will probably rule that as dangerous and have it banned.

A few things caught my eye this morning.

Mario Balotelli being allergic to certain types of grass. (Not exactly the ideal career then.)

Man City losing. (I result watch, and slow at it).

Liverpool also losing away, probably in preparation for one of 'those' nights. (If I didn't know any better, I'd say the games were scripted like a pro-wrestling match.)

Oh, and the personally more interesting one: the possibility of QPR being docked points.

EDIT: typo.

EDIT 2: oh, and that Neil Warnock saying that their situation is not like the Tevez situation at West Ham. Now I am intrigued.

Don't they have that Hawkeye technology that can tell if people were offside? I don't think the thing in the players boots would work as your feet can be onside and your head offside.

Whats that whole QPR story OBaka? I only heard it briefly about new owners or something.

Balotelli didn't look like he could see properly last night, Paul Scholes is actually allergic to grass too and has a serious asthma problem.

Liverpool were awful last night too, but Braga didn't look the Georgie Best either so they still have a good chance of going through.

In tennis Hawkeye is used for tracking the ball I think (and sparingly used as well). But yeah, sounds possible to track players too.

QPR: Well, apparently it's referring to another Argentinian they signed (Alejandro Faurlin); third party issue and agent use stuff. Allegedly there are seven infringements of the regulations. Will have to see how this plays out and how different it is to the Tevez thing. If it is similar to the Tevez situation then Warnock is not going to look very good with his current defense of the situation.

Heard that Scholes was asthmatic; didn't know about allergy. But still a peculiar career choice healthwise. (My own body breaks down after physical work so I'll ideally avoid it even if I was good at it. Though I guess some players get paid enough to make up for that inconvenience.)

I wasn't 100% about Hawkeye, I just kinda made a random claim and hoped for the best with that one lol.

QPR is very interesting though, do you know if it was Warnock who actually signed him or was he signed before he arrived?

Scholes is also ginger, if you add up all those afflictions it explains his often angry tackling.

Scholes: that works for me.

QPR: looks like the player in question was signed before Warnock joined them. So Warnock can't be directly blamed for it, though it would have been funnier.

Would be good for the chasing pack if QPR are docked points, but after West Ham I'm guessing they'll just be fined.

yeah, it is tough to exercise it, and it gets even worse if its a call against one of the big clubs at home. lets just say, it takes a lot of courage to stick to your guns (and then having that doubt that maybe you did see it wrong, can you imagine it?)

That balotelli is so talented, he just has other things that are more important to him than football at the moment. it seems like man u is going to win it...again, and city really looked like contenders this year. lets see if arsenal make this thing interesting

thats right! completely forgot about the hawkeye system. why don't they just use that? it seems like it would not break up the rhythm at all. (i think in tennis they show the path of the ball more for the players/fans then any other reason really) and also didn't know qpr were getting docked points...interesting

Refs: Druss's idea of RoboRef is the answer. "You have 20 seconds to comply..." Or maybe we could nick a Terminator model or two....

QPR: they haven't been docked points, and as a Norwich fan (oo...third place with a game in hand at the time of writing) it would certainly make the table even tighter than it already is.

*Gasp* There are more important things than football? (I'll just continue my game of Mass Effect...)

Hawkeye: might be an interesting thing to use in football for offside; the old offside rather than this rather daft active/inactive thing. We can even have it beep (or someone press a button) when someone is offside! Though it could make it all a bit videogamey in a way.

Norwich are playing on monday night aren't they?

Balotelli is an ass clown of the highest order. Someone really needs to smack him about the head abit, he clearly has mental problems.

What kind of noise would be best though? I was thinking maybe the noise that used to play in Family Fortunes when they gave an answer that wasn't on the board.

Just watched the United - Arsenal match. I think we found a possible answer to our left wing problem in Fabio, both Da Silva twins were excellent while they were on the pitch. That was also the best Rooney has played in almost exactly one year. Scholes was lucky to stay on the pitch too, it was all nothing in the end up but he was still pushing his luck big time.

The best bit though was Valencia making his comeback. It was absolutely fantastic to see him back on the pitch and it made my weekend because I'm a sad, sad man.

Go, Norwich!

It would be funny if QPR is docked points though to see what Neil Warnock's reaction would be.

Wrong answer noise from Family Fortunes? Sounds good to me. The ball then has to go to the other side anyway...

Druss: still no DA2, huh? (Mine arrived today as well so hopefully that win over Arsenal was sufficient...)

I hate you OBaka. Soooooo much. :P Nah not arrived yet, probably Monday or Tuesday before it arrives.

You think now that Warnock's reaction would be funny but you will feel very different in 6 months time when he is still going on about it.

Wasn't just the win but the fact we looked dangerous and actually put in a half decent performance. I was very pleased with the Da Silva twins and Smalling. Ofcourse Valencia's comeback was the highlight, he is the best right winger we have had since Kanchelskis.

Warnock: true. Be like how I felt about the Liverpool sale in the end. Still, I can always avoid his later rants. I'll take the guffaws where and when I can for the moment. (Generally things seem so depressing worldwide.)

It has been a while since Man Utd were actually playing well instead of just grinding out results. They'll need that to stay on top. And it's timely for Valencia to be back since Nani is currently out as well. Who do you think will get the nod on the right if Valencia and Nani were both fit?

The question now is whether Arsenal can bounce back after these two defeats or will they just crumble?

EDIT: what? No highlights? Gr....

I wouldn't be surprised at all if Arsenal crumbled again and didn't even finish second.

We weren't brilliant by any stretch of the imagination and Arsenal didn't exactly play with any tempo, more or less played into our hands but we were better than we have been and had some good individual displays.

Valencia easily, just like before he got injured. As good as Nani has been he is still very inconsistant and you know what your going to get with Valencia, plus he is better defensively. Nani will either get shunted to the left or the bench. Be interesting to see if we do sign a leftwinger or if Sir Alex is happy with giving Cleverly/Nani a shot at it. Was reading a rumour we had agreed a deal to sign Rodwell, but I think he is quite injury prone.

I've never had the same problem with Warnock as other people have had. Theres far more hateful managers in the game in my opinion.

They should start sending refs off for giving bad decisions.
I was watching the Arsenal match and I couldn't believe what I saw, Barcelona had no chance of scoring two goals with Arsenal getting more into the game.

I still hate how there is still no goal-line technology.

They do demote refs for bad performances. Closest we'll get to them being sent off I think.

I think Martin Atkinson was demoted after the United - Chelsea match, he was on the football league show anyway reffing a match.

Grant Holt seems to come from the Druss school of penalty taking, that was unsavable. Norwich have started well too.
