Transfer fees are strange nebulous things. Look at the money Liverpool are spending on players who haven't really proven anything compared to Sunderland getting O'Shea and Brown for £6m they have both won the CL twice, have several league titles and a few cups under their belts. I'm surprised we let them go so cheap and surprised we let O'Shea go at all. Its a strange market.
I think the whole wanting to keep them at the club to develop is a bargaining tool or thinking they might get more money next year if the player has improved enough.
On the Charlie Adam thing if watching him towards the end of the season is anything to go by then Liverpool might be hilarious to watch next season with him and Gerrard attempting constant long range passes straight to the other team or into the crowd.

I'll agree that the development thing is likely to be a bargaining tool, though it is one that also makes developmental sense (even though it might not be what they actually have in mind).
Oh...here's an interesting one: Man City are in dialogue with UEFA concerning the financial fairplay rules. Hm......

Honestly, I don't think financial fairplay changes anything, at least not for now. Just one example from the Bundesliga. Vfl Wolfsburg is owned by Volkswagen. They spent €40-50m+, per season, for new players. On par with Bayern, and far, far more compared to any traditional team like Schalke or Dortmund (with ten times more fans and far, far larger statiums...). They pay a lot of money for the stadium name or shirt sponsorship, and as such are able to buy, like last year, Diego for €28m. Which is quite a lot when the "usual" (non Bayern) sum is like €5-10m for good players here...
However, compared to Man City they look like a small fish in the bigger european pond.

Would still like to see a club fall foul of said impending regulations just to see if UEFA will stick to their guns.

Come to think of it, what do you suppose the dialogue Man City had with UEFA was? Maybe UEFA told them how to get around the rules. *Cough*

Well...to be fair *cough* Barcelona have been fairly quiet with respect to the Fabregas dealings; their players on the other hand have been expressing (what I'm sure certain people would maintain as) personal opinions which just happen to coincide with Barcelona's aims and wishes. I'm sure if they have to release a statement there would be a line citing that what the players said is in no way an official representation of Barcelona. (The whole legal mumbo-jumbo.)

...and wayne rooney says man u need to improve an extra 5 percent to match barca! lol sure wayne.....sure. i think rooney should focus on himself having a good season rather then what man u needs to do beat barca. and i also saw that champions league final. a complete class above man u. man u fans, please don't get all angry, its the truth.
copa america is getting good. perhaps the level of play is lower, but the results have been very very surprising. (a brazil team that can't make a penalty! and then they said they played well?! well, i only saw the extra times, but brazil never looked threatening, and i saw their other three matches in their entirety, absolutely nothing special. this team played terrible note, maicon's starting instantly made them a lot better)
messi played well, so he silenced some critics. druss, i know u get very excited when it comes to disliking players, so you'll be happy to know tevez was abysmal in the tournament. messi actually played less like messi on barca and more like xavi. he had some nice diagonal runs, but he really also played to pass and set up a lot of opportunities. tevez probably did not fit in that style of football cause he has played just the english and argentine style, not the barca style....which reminds me, i have to give guardiola a ring to ask him how close i am getting his formula right. (i've been taking notes)

I saw the shootout in the Brazil game, I dunno what was going on but them penalties were a joke. I never understand why players try stupid fancy things when under pressure like that. I prefer the tried and tested absolutely blast the f*cking thing and if the keeper actually saves well then thats his problem.
Tevez should have been dropped but he would have gone mad if he actually was dropped. Be interesting to see if he does end up back in Brazil or not, they might have the transfer fee but can they afford wages and signing on fees? What happens when he is closer to his daughters? Who's fault will it be when he asks for another transfer next year?
I get excited by more than disliking players theres also freekicks, boobs, United, boobs, Scousers, boobs, diving, boobs, seeing Berbatov instantly control the ball, boobs, curious man-love for Diego Forlan, boobs....
Edit: It seems that Man City have accepted Corinthians bid for Tevez. I bet they are kinda glad to be getting big bucks for him, no player is worth the hassle that Tevez seems hell bent on putting his clubs through.

I have read suggestions that Messi plays better for Barcelona than for Argentina; wouldn't surprise me if he didn't seem like his usual self. Different system, players and whatnot.
It does seem to have been a quiet transfer window, or perhaps a rather unspectacular one anyway. And...still keep an eye on things.

What do you all think of the whole Man City/FIFA thing? I really don't see how it benefits EA other than getting a pile of cash from City.

spot on obaka. you know i love football, i love sports and the competition and all the good stuff it brings out in people. you guys would reprimand someone who took a penalty that way?! i think you are missing the point of sports, which is for enjoyment.OBakaSama wrote...
So...football has to be played in an aesthetically pleasing way for the referee otherwise there's a booking. Riiiiiight..... Does that mean teams who play 'anti-football' forfeit the match because the ref doesn't like their playing style you think?
Starting to lose the will to live all of a sudden....
we hear about corrupt officials who accept bribes to decide and vote one way. about fans who act violently and malicously against other fans and teams, about footballers who will hold out on contracts for more millions. these people have lost sight of what football is about, and it becomes about the business and politics of football, rather then the actual game. when it becomes about maticulously criticizing the smallest detail of play, what is next, banning brazilian style dribbles because its not fair to the defenders?
and to add to taking a penalty. yes, i am against the instances where the penalty taker stops and starts his run, and i remember someone saying that that has been banned.

While we're on about penalties....this, though Cruyff didn't 'invent it' and the infamous botch aftermath by Henry and Pires (catch Henry's line about entertainment. [smilie]../../../images/forum/emoticons/wink.png[/smilie]). Now, while I understand that Henry was essentially employing damage limitation regarding that failed attempt as long as the rules do not disallow it I don't see any 'disrespect'. I certainly don't see it as 'disrespectful'. If doing something is 'disrespectful' hence it shouldn't be done, may we have teams appealing results because losing a match 8-0 is 'disrespectful'? "How about you just let us win 1-0 then?"
I feel as if I'm in ranting mood of late...

I'm pretty sure Ronaldo still does the stop start run fairly regularly, I recall either him or Rooney(possibly both) missing a penalty for us after doing it not too long ago.
The "pass" penalty to me is skirting the rules because your supposed to hit the ball in the direction of the goal and hitting it at a diagonal like that is pushing it a bit. I don't have a problem with it but a ref could interpret it as against the rules.
I seem to recall once trying a fancy penalty and making an utter tw@t out of myself. Did the one foot behind the other thing and barely connected with the ball, I'm not even sure it would have reached the goal line if the keeper had just let it go. I'd been belting them home with either foot and got a bit carried away.
On the whole 8-0 thing I recall I think it was in the NHL a few years ago one team absolutely hammered another team and the losers complained that it was unprofessional and unsporstmanlike to run the score up like that. It might have been the MLS but it was definately in America. I found it comical.
