Sneijder is in my opinion is one of the best midfielders right now i think Manu will greatly benefit from this buy, because that guy puts hearth into the game and will do 100% to win it.

Veron actually did well in European games, he just wasn't up for the pace of the PL. He didn't get the time and space on the ball that he needed and he wasn't really suited to the style of play over here. Not sure if Sneijder would be any different as I haven't seen him much but £35m for a midfielder untested in the PL seems like a huge risk. I think its alot harder to adapt to than any other position. Theres no hiding when your in the middle.

I'm sure Newcastle have said they used some of the Carroll money to try and renovate their stadium too which I'm sure would go down well with fans during this scenario.

As for Sjneider, would obviously like to see him play for us though whether he is worth the asking price and the wages is another point entirely, personally don't think we NEED him and would be surprised if we did sign him.

We have gotten by for years without a Snjeider type player, Scholes himself admits he hasn't done much in years. I think we need a defensive midfielder first. Especially if Fletcher continues to have the problems he is having then we need a tackler.

I think Man Utd have lacked that sort of holding midfielder since Roy Keane was past his prime as it were. As good as Hargreaves was he just wasn't able to stay fit to be the player the club needed. If Hargreaves had been fit...well...the complexion of the team would be different. Shame really.

Hargreaves was brilliant in his first season, he got played on the wing and at fullback too and always did a job. Seems to be Carrick given that job now with Fletcher closing down allover the pitch. I don't have a problem with Carrick overall but he lacks mobility and bite in the tackle.

Edwin Van Der Sar's testimonial is on live from Amsterdam on MUTV. The great Holland and Ajax teams from the 90s are playing with Bergkamp, Overmars, The De Boer's etc. Few United players, Dirk Kuyt and Luis Saha too. It was all going so well until Mick Hucknall turned up.

Hhmm baseless paranoid complaint followed by strange overreaction....Liverpool fan?

It seems Everton and Stoke have entered the running to sign Barton. I can see this one rumbling along for a while.

Sir Alex apparently said he would be willing to sell Berbatov which made Druss sad. Berbatov is one of my favourite players and I'd hate to see him go.

Just over a week to the big kick off. Newcastle vs. Arsenal is the first live tv game of the season, Norwich away to Wigan on the opening day and United away to West Brom the first big 4pm Sunday match. Anyone else getting excited yet?

Hm...that actually reminds me. Norwich was supposed to have played a friendly today. The anticipation grows as we get closer to the first game of the season. People are quite excited that we are back in the Premier League. How long we stay there is another issue.

Hm...looks like your boy de Laet scored in the draw with Real Zaragoza. Nice stuff. Gives me a bit of hope that we can stay in the league anyway.

I think the fact that very few teams that finished in the lower half have actually strengthened much and alot of them have been weakened should give you a bit of hope too.

True. Though I'm sure there will be that whole rush before the transfer window closes thing going on as usual. Actually, there was a snippet about....Swansea trying to get Trezeguet. Now that would be interesting.

Lambert seems to have been working fast in this window though.
He already had the signings made up in his mind so he could get everyone he wanted right away.

Rather unknown and young players but that means that they are hungry to prove themselves.
And since they were all signed so early they will also get time to blend with the rest of the squad.

Yep. It certainly seems that way, and hopefully it'll pay off for us as well. That way at least the squad has time to gel, and people don't have to go through the whole last minute rush on deadline day.

Lambert did state, I believe, that he wanted players who were hungry to prove themselves. And if those players have the skills and tenacity then we may have a fighting chance of staying up. Or maybe Delia could come out at half time and give the supporters a pep talk.

Haha! Yeah her pep talks could inspire anyone.

I think Lambert has a very sound signing policy here. And considering his limited resources I don't think he could have done any better.

Fingers crossed.

Hopefully you'll get some good news concerning Newcastle. It does make you wonder what Ashley is up to at times even from an outsider's perspective.

Oh...and Torres is reportedly dropped for the start of the season. Will he find his form in time? The drama continues.....

I saw Torres in one of the pre-season games and he looked exactly like he did when he first arrived, sluggish, off the pace and completely lacking confidence. Was only pre-season but he didn't seem to have progressed at all but every once in a while there was a flash of his class. I think its only a matter of time though. Saying that if I had to choose between an in form Drogba and an in form Torres I'd pick Drogba over most players. He is unstoppable when he is in the mood.

Drogba is a complete menace when he's in form. I'd have to say he would be the best striker in the league on that form. Or as some like to put it 'unplayable'; though that actually sounds odd. (Must stop overthinking and stick to conventional language use....)

Unplayagainstable?

Maybe Torres is one of those players that can only play well when he is the best player in the team. He was Liverpools only world class player and their best player by a mile which seemed to get the best out of him. At Chelsea he isn't even their best striker and maybe thats whats getting to him. Kinda odd for one of the best strikers in the world on his day but some people are like that. He has the same problem for Spain with Xavi, Iniesta, Villa, Casillas all being held in higher regard.

It's a point that someone made regarding Torres' form towards the end of his time with Liverpool; that he couldn't even produce the sort of form we expect of him even with the Spanish midfield. Perhaps you're right about his big fish mentality as it were. Though...was he the best player at Athletico? He played with Aguero there, didn't he?

You know, Bolton have had some rotten luck with two players being out due to broken legs. Sounds like they've been cursed or something.

Community Shield on Sunday, and league starts again next Saturday. At least one 'drought' is over. (Now waiting for the summer games drought to end.)

I'm not even sure if he had that great of a record at Athletico, surely if he had then a big team would have signed him. I know we looked at him but he never did enough to earn the move. Not sure if Aguero was there back then, isn't he really young still like 23 or am I mistaken?

Aye Bolton are a bit cursed Holden still hasn't recovered from his broken leg either and they lost Elmander on a free and Sturridge back to Chelsea. That Korean lad looked a good player too.

Community Shield is just a friendly but your still gutted if you lose. Just watched Paul Scholes testimonial and saw his last ever goal at Old Trafford, typical Scholes 25 yard rocket right into the corner.

Having seen all our pre-season games I'm very excited about the new season despite our lack of a marquee signing. Our young players were very impressive on tour. Cleverly, Fabio, Evans, and Diouf all looked very promising. Wellbeck has been fantastic when he played, the boy never stops running and works his arse off winning the ball back from the front. Anderson though has been the most impressive, I know its only pre-season and we weren't playing much but he looks to be finally back to looking as good as he did when he first arrived, he seems to have finally figured out how to both shoot and finish having scored a few times and not scuffed any of his shots. If he stays fit then I expect big things from him.

Going to be weird without Neville, Scholes and Van Der Sar though.

Is Deus Ex: Human Revolution considered the official end of the games drought?

The first sign of 'rain' will do it. Unlikely to get it meself as I have a problem with first person perspectives in games.

Quick check with the wonder wikipedia shows that Torres played with Aguero in his last season there. It does look like there weren't many outstanding players to put him in the limelight though, so perhaps that big fish mentality thought is valid.

Community Shield may be a friendly, but you're up against Man City; it can never be a friendly! Good luck for the match.

I'm counting it as official, theres a couple out in September too then October starts the big kick off with Arkham Asylum.

I don't know if he did all that well with Athletico, I recall when he was brought to England (in a crate just like Dracula) there were people questioning his scoring record and the fee paid for him.

I don't think Sir Alex is taking it too serious given how long he let most of the first team play tonight. Will be nice to get a win and I really don't want to see them with more silverwear but I won't be too downhearted.

At Athletico Torres highest goals tally was 19; usually it was around 14. Under the usual English mentality of buying a 20 goals a season striker then Torres actually failed that; though admittedly he did brilliantly in his first season at Liverpool. And since then he hasn't really lived up to that initial promise; injuries don't help but still....

A win over your derby rivals is always good regardless of the occasion (as far as I'm concerned). At the very least you get bragging rights.

Will have to look into Arkham City when it's out. (Just finished Arkham Asylum recently. Cracking game.)

I thought it was only really last year that Torres form suffered a dip, I can't really remember much before that to be honest. I still remain convinced he will find his form again though.

A win would be good but it won't be the end of the world if we don't win. Our midfield is looking a tad suspect for tomorrow with no Carrick and probably no Fletcher. Looking forward to Young playing in a more competitive game, he has impressed in pre-season.

I thought Arkham Asylum was fantastic and would settle for more of the same with Arkham City, its getting alot of hype though and if it does surpass Asylum then it will be a hell of a game.
