I'm going through the challenges in Arkham Asylum. Trying to better your own score...been a while since I've tried to do that in a game.

Last season is when Torres form really suffered, and he's still to recover from that. Good players recover, though the rumour (?) that he won't start the season playing can't do him much good. Though sometimes just churning through games hoping things will pick up probably doesn't help either, but you're more of an authority on that, Druss. Your thoughts on that sort of situation?

Be interesting to see how Young will perform at Man Utd. He's always been a solid player as far as I'm concerned. And how Ferguson will juggle his squad with him in it will also be interesting to see (as will the possible absences of Fabregas and Nasri for Wenger).

Oh, and rathered bouyed by Norwich's 3-0 win over Parma even if it was only a friendly.

I wish I hadn't traded mine in, I saw it for £10 in gamestop but I ended up getting Fallout New Vegas instead.

How am I more of an expert? Are you referring to my years of ineptitude? Its a weird thing, you see it so often that it just takes a bit of luck to get one goal then they go on a run of goals. The problem being Torres got his one goal and didn't seem to gather much momentum. Its the strangest of things though how easily it can turn around. It reminds me of the way Andy Cole started off his United career. Chelsea beat Rangers 3-1 today, dunno if Torres played but I assume he did.

I still think we paid alot for a player in the last year of his contract but Young has fitted in well so far, linking up well with Evra and tracking back well, his delivery is very good and he is a good alternative on the left.

Do you have any idea what Norwich's starting line up will be or is it all a mystery with the new signings?

Welbeck is in the England squad this week, not sure what to make of that.

I noticed alot of the championship grounds that they showed on sky today were pretty empty. Kinda sad for the first day of the season but I suppose its a luxury most people can't afford these days.

Not years of ineptitude, just more attention to detail regarding footballing matters. "What? There was a game last night?" *Facepalm motion to self* Which leads nicely to Norwich's starting line up. No idea, but I'm sure there will be eleven players on the field. That's about the extent of my footballing knowledge....

Welbeck is an interesting addition it has to be said, and ahead of Bent and Defoe. Mind you, if a manager has an inkling about the future it might be an idea to try and blend the younger players in now. Let the youngsters get accustomed to each other at international level and allow that team work to flourish. Assuming they have team work of course.

Economy is floundering, so I'm not surprised that grounds are a bit emptier. Mind you, it could also be because people are on their summer hols as well. Having 'said' that though, this year's transfer market for the big clubs have been fairly slow; so it looks like even the money men there have started to realize that they need to change their ways a bit.

Ah thats what is known in the business as having no life lol. I'm stuck laying about the house waiting on an injection in my back and specialists so I've way too much free time to analyse these things.

Welbeck just put in a man of the match performance in the Community Shield. Well it was tight between him, Young and Anderson who was immense again. After that performance I expect Welbeck will start the season as our first choice atleast until Hernandez comes back and thats coming from a massive Berbatov fan. The way he works to get the ball back I can see him becoming a big game specialist like Park. Wouldn't be too surprised if Evans started ahead of Ferdinand too. He has been fantastic in pre-season.

3-2 really flattered City today, it was completely one sided. I wouldn't be surprised if City went out now and signed another 3 or 4 players after that. Nani's first goal, if Barcelona had scored it you would never hear the end of it. One touch passing took City apart and a sublime finish.

Not sure how much tickets are in the Championship but I suppose its the cost of the whole day out to the match with food and travel if your not living close to the ground.

Worst part about the football being back is that Jamie Redknapp is back on my tv, thus my rage levels have gone up 82%. Gary Neville did a great job as a pundit though and put the idiot sat next to him to shame. Then again a retarded Labrador would offer more insight than Redknapp.

An inspiring game which mainly starred the United young'uns. Was also very happy with our new signings (apart from De Gea's fluff just before 2nd half) it's giving me a lot of expectation for the season next week.

The football AND the games drought is coming to an end indeed Druss. I'm definitely stoked!

Ah yes...the Sky Sports team of presenters and pundits. I guess you'll have to take the rough with the smooth on that front, Druss. On an aside....I get the feeling that is a somewhat unfair comparison between the labrador and Redknapp; what did the labrador do to be lumped in with Redknapp? *cough*

As with any match, ticket prices vary (obviously). While under normal circumstances I think tickets are affordable, assuming you have a job and stuff like that, it's the travel and time needed to attend matches I have never figured out. Cross country matches like Swansea and Norwich....I just don't get it. It's amazing when you hear stories of supporters following their teams for decades and never missing a match; a sense of admiration arises. Then I think about the financial commitment they have made and I'm thinking 'lottery winner'. That's a lot of money to fork out over the course of a year.

And yeah. One up on your rivals; tis a good thing and a good start to the season. Wouldn't surprise me if Man City do sign a couple more players.

De Gea really should have saved that, it doesn't bode well that the first thought in my head was "Edwin would have saved that." It did swerve at the last minute so I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt. To me it seemed like he closed his eyes and dived, hoping for the best.

I apologise to the retarded labrador community.

Theres people over here that never miss their teams matches, travelling every weekend to see Celtic, United, Liverpool etc. What amazes me is alot of them are jobless. I got abuse for only ever going to one United match. I could barely afford it even when I had a job so I dunno how these people manage it.

Funny how the games and football drought happen at the same time...I sense a conspiracy...

Speaking of conspiracy's, that leads me to Roswell, New Mexico and Gabriel Obertan. He is signing for Newcastle tomorrow on a 5 year deal. He is a strange one, he can look like a world beater and a headless chicken at the same time. I think if he gets in the Newcastle team he will be a good signing when he gets the experience of playing every week. We just need to sign someone else that looks like an alien now that both him and Silvestre are gone.

Don't forget about the Christmas rush of games either, which coincides with a very packed football calendar. Hm....I think you may be on to something.

Hopefully then de Gea's fluff was limited to that one incident, and he's gotten that out of his system. Better in a game where you win than one where you lose. Though a fluff might be handy when we play you....

Regular games do seem to help players improve. In which case...Torres should get some regular game time. Hm....as for Obertan....I am getting the mental image of an actual headless chicken with Messi-like skills on the pitch....

I like to think today's game was a bit of a warm-up for the squad, and what better than a game where we beat our rivals at Wembley. Not bad I guess, however from what I've seen today I'm quite hopeful for our team's performance in the season, plus we were missing players like Park and 'Little Pea'.

I'm also curious in regards to Chelsea's performance for obvious reasons though I doubt it'll be Torres alone making headlines for them (at least good headlines), skeptical it might be but Abromovich may as well have spent that money to buy 4 new players or a new yacht to add to his collection.

In regards to games, it'll be when October/November hits when I'll be swamped with games to play, just hope I don't have too much time spent on games that I neglect the season. *shudders*

I'm 'lucky' that I have a huge backlog of games which I have barely made a dent in to keep me occupied, drought or no. Still a few titles I am looking forward to though.

And it was a good warm up for Man Utd. Wins will do the players a world of good. And if the performances are noteworthy then it bodes well for you.

As for Chelsea...buying Torres at that time still seems somewhat strange. I just can't fathom as to why they did. Whether they will perform...well...it seems that they are still after Modric; and that's one particular transfer story that has been rumbling for a while now. Wonder if Tottenham will do business a bit more swiftly rather than drag it out. When Berbatov went to Man Utd it very much seemed like they backed themselves into a corner as they had no time for any further business.

You know, if Abramovich did get a new yacht perhaps he could have it parked (anchored?) in front of goal and be done with defense. Hm....not quite parking a bus but still....

Is there much out in December? Most things seem to be November with a couple in September and October. Good times getting up on saturday morning to play the new game you spent all night playing and constantly checking the time incase you miss the start of the 12.30pm match.

I'd pay to watch the headless chicken. Unless he is a diver and whinger like most players these days. Reminds me I got annoyed today when the ref, Dowd was it? Actually stopped the game for Balotelli when everyone with any sense at all could see he was faking it. He tried a fancy trick and gave the ball away so immediately went down claiming injury, first holding his shin then his knee. I never know why they hold the shin when its the only part that has padding.

I found Gary Nevilles take on Balotelli to be rather brilliant too. Basically he just said if he was actually doing something on the pitch then his antics might be easier to take but he has done more or less nothing. He also thinks he will poision the atmosphere at City and they will win nothing with him. The Neviller is a god amongst men.

I think it was Torres wanted out of Liverpool so badly that he negotiated with them to sign him in January, not sure where I heard that. That or Abramovich just wanted him there and then.

I think there are some released nearer to Christmas, but the bulk are released so they can serve as presents. Christmas is still the time of the year when they earn their money.

I saw a line about Mancini needing a psychologist to talk to Balotelli. Not sure what the exact situation is but it sounds very curious indeed. As for him clutching his shin...perhaps he wanted to feel the fluffy padding against his skin as it was treated with Lenor (or some other fabric softener).

Now that you mention it I do recall that Torres mentioning that he wanted to leave earlier. So...maybe Abramovich bought Torres out of pity?

I'd say a few will be pushed back to early next year to avoid the big hitters like Skyrim.

I read that headline about the psychologist but didn't read the story. I just came up with my own headline involving a Tw@t Whisperer.

Abramovich doesn't have a good history of buying world class strikers that his manager didn't want, like Shevchenko. Abramovich: Destroyer of Strikers.

Cleverley has been called up to the England squad and the media are getting warmed up already, he is being talked up as the next big thing. He has potential no doubt but very little experience and has yet to be tested at the highest level. The media is getting ready to build him up and tear him down like all half decent young English players.

I only know of Mass Effect 3 and The Witcher 2 (Xbox) pushed to early 2012 to avoid the Skyrims and the Battlefields this year, if anything it's already making '12 look fantastic for games.

I think Cleverly looks promising as well, it remains to be seen how he'll perform for United in the rest of the season and whether he'll be a bit of a regular, or a reserve or even put on loan somewhere. Either way this year could very well be his breakout.

As an Englander, his commitment to taking the ball from the opposition and really causing chaos in the midfield is something we could really do with to bolster the squad on the pitch. A Cleverly/Young/Wilshere trio could potentially be deadly, but again I'd like to see how he does in the league first before deciding.

A sensible wait and see approach there, Sparrow. I've yet to really see Cleverley in action, so hopefully there will be some highlights some point in the future to check out his skills. With some guidance from the coaches at Man Utd we may be looking at a rosy future for him. Assuming the media don't go messing things up.

Hm...almost forgotten about Shevchenko. I guess that about sums up how memorable his time at Chelsea was. Wonder if we can make a list of players that didn't quite cut the mustard....

I think the thing people seem to be forgetting about Cleverley is that he isn't first choice for United. He has Carrick, Anderson, Giggs and Fletcher all ahead of him. He is a young player with potential who is being given a chance, he has looked very good in pre-season but he could end up being another Gibson. He had a good 45 minutes but its early days yet. Its only a friendly for England too and he might not even play, he is only in the squad because Gerrard, Carrick and Wilshere(maybe more I can't remember) are all out. Sky Sports News are going all out promoting him now, I expect the papers are or will be the same.

Brilliant poll on SSN too about who will win the league? Guess who has been voted second favourite with about 28% of the vote so far.

A list of failures in general or Chelsea failures OBaka?

Let's throw it open and say in general; thus we can add some players they have bought in the past. And it's been a while since we had a laugh at them.

*After checking poll* What?!? They're second. *Scratches head* Must be the Dalglish factor.

I wonder how many games Giggs will play this season. Given his age and experience I would have thought Ferguson would likely use him for the big games, and let the others play the other games for them to start blending into the first team.

I wonder if Cleveley would be getting those plaudits if he wasn't English. A different sort of English premium as it were.

Giggs will still have flashes of brilliance on the pitch when he plays so maybe, I keep forgetting about Anderson too and if he's in form whenever he plays then that's another powerhouse in our midfield that is greatly appreciated.

I'll admit Liverpool do look slightly re-invigorated compared to where they were last year and the year before; both financially, managerial and player-wise. Expect Gerrard to mess up their formula when he returns of injury.

As for the media, if he's young, very talented, English and plays for a Premier League club he will surely be watched by the ever watchful eyes that is the press, and expect them to descend upon any mishap or failure or overall disappointing performance like vultures tearing away at something even if there's nothing left to feast on.

Maybe Giggs won't be so good with his off-field antics now curtailed, perhaps thats where he got his magic powers from.

Liverpool look unbalanced to me. I think that poll was more to do with the yearly "This will be our year!" It amused me, by November it will be back to the usual "Next year is our year!" I was talking to my mate earlier, a Liverpool fan who is expecting another season of disapointment.

I think this will be a big year for Anderson, he looks like he is finally fulfilling his potential. If he stays fit then I expect big things from him. Cleverley is indeed just getting the plaudits because he is English. He looks good but hasn't proved anything yet.

List of failures off the top of my head I'd say Veron, Torres so far, Crouch and Defoe at Spurs, Kaka at Real Madrid. Thats all I've got off the top of my head. CoughBebeCough....

That isn't a bad way to get magic powers. Moving on....

As Sparrow pointed out Gerrard's return will likely unbalance the team (again). I don't really see him being dropped though.

Failures. Hm...Mateja Kezman at Chelsea (and seemingly having left PSV).

Damn I specifically came in here to say Kezman. Has Klaas Jan Huntelaar done well anywhere outside Holland? Does Kuyt count? He is another of those that scored alot in the Dutch league then couldn't convert his form to other leagues, mind you he is rarely played as a striker. Joe Cole. Stan Collymore.

I read a stat on Sky a few weeks ago when Gerrards injury first emerged. Liverpool have a better record without Gerrard than with him throughout his career.

Patrick Kluivert.

Not bad as per se, he just wasn't bothered to play for Newcastle but was content with just strolling around during the matches.
He didn't see much point in playing since Shearer demanded all the attention...

Kuyt is a tough one as you point out, Druss. To be fair to him, as you 'say' he is rarely played as a striker as he was in Holland. Perhaps his goals tally might be different if he did play as a striker. Or maybe not.

Gerrard dragging Liverpool down throughout his career, and not just recently? *Winces* Well....wonder if Dalglish will do anything about it. Doubt it though.

Ah...forgot that Kluivert played here. What an impression to make. *Cough*

Oh...continuing our flops series: Alfonso Alves at Middlesborough.

Haha! Yeah, Afonso Alves... was a storm in Allsvenskan (tells more about the league than it tells about him really) and pretty decent in the Eredivise.
But embarrassing for Boro.

Very embarrassing for Boro. Plus he's Brazilian as well, and there's a whole slew of failures along those lines in the Premiership. I'm sure we can come up with a few there.

Oh...Robbie Keane since his jaunt with Liverpool.
