KotOR is more an OpenGL game than Direct3D, and ATI never did support OpenGL well after Dx4 was
available; the X1n00 cards and drivers the same ages are about as new as you can use for this game.
I have an old Radeon 9800 in a rehoused old PC that I originally built at about the time KotOR was two
years old, then got it back to perform a major upgrade.  I saved the parts just for the NWN-1 / KotOR
pair, and recently got a refurbished CM Elite case for only $14.95 plus quite reasonable shipping, so
I can play on that when I have an urge to do so.

I believe that KotOR is close to its seventh birthday now.  I've run it in Win98se, Windows 2000, and
Windows XP, but now, I prefer the W2K for it.  nVIDIA did keep on supporting OpenGL relatively well
through the Geforce 8n00 cards, I believe.  I held onto an awful old FX 5700 Ultra just in case the
9800 XT and drivers for that hadn't done the trick . .

btw Bioware swears it's an ATI driver issue - for the last 6 years!!

I have a little cube of a PC with nothing much inside besides a TB-sized Hdd, RAM, and the Mini-ATX
mainboard. I almost never have either a keyboard or display attached to it, and all it has for video is a
truly awful Nforce 6150 IGP. My printers are attached to it, and it runs 24-7, on W2K, just to be a rather
cheap printer server (I had nothing but bad luck with all of the dedicated HP hardware intended for the
purpose).

But I'd bet that the 6150 would run KotOR. KotOR's supposed to be able to run on a Geforce2. The very
worst that I ever tried it with was a GF3, Ti-200, a rather long time ago.   Fact of the matter there is that
when I bought that, I had finally embraced the world of accelerated 3D, and it was KotOR / NWN1 (SoU)
that were responsible.

It isn't your ATI card. The game runs flawlessly for me on a Win7 system with a 5870 card.

You are EXTREMELY lucky - the forums are full of stories for Win7 and/or ATI video cards

Another positive anecdote here.  Win7 64, ATI 5750, Catalyst 10.6.  The only glitch involves when movies first start playing; I have to alt-tab out & back in to get the movie to restart & actually play.

Well, if all you lucky people would post your config from KotOR (example in my original post), maybe I can see what the difference is, besides Xp and Win7, that is

Just finished the Steam version on Vista 64 using an ATI 5850 in CF (running CCC 10.7) on dual monitor. Loading a saved game for the first time produces no image. Alt-tabbing to the desktop and back to the game works. After that loading works fine until the next time the game is restarted. Apart from that no other issues related to graphics.

Edit: I posted the above to show that there is hope for ATI hardware. Hehe. Vista 64 is no XP 32, but the game is happy with it. ;)

I have kotor 1 in my old windows 2000 pro with ati X800 card and kotor 2 in windows 7 with ati HD5770 card. Both works fine. Both at resolution 1600x1200.

My point, it's not ATI card issue.

I had a lot of issues with the D2D version with my HD 5770 on Windows XP SP3. Retail works fine though. Have you tried reinstalling your drivers or updating them?

It sounds like my problem is the same as the original poster's.

After installation,
1.  I ran the launcher
2.  The Configuration Utility confirmed my hardware met the minimum requirements
3.  I set the resolution at 1600x1200
4.  Ran Game from the launcher
5.  It loaded fine
6.  It got through all of the intro movies
7.  I was able to create a character and played him through the entire first ship sequence with no graphics errors, no sound errors, and no perceptible system lag or fps drops
8.  After landing on the planet, I exited the game and turned off my computer.

A few hours later,
1.  I Booted up the computer
2.  Ran the launcher
3.  Ran Game from the launcher
4.  Saw the ship picture on my desktop for a few seconds
5.  The screen went black
6.  A second or so after the black screen, a large microsoft hourglass appeared in the middle of my screen
7.  Followed by a large blue mouse icon (the resolution was clearly no longer 1600x1200 but looked closer to 400x300)
8.  It sat there until I closed the "Not Responding" program in Task Manager
9.  The stall occurred just before the Lucas Arts logo would have appeared
10. I call it a stall and not a crash, because I was still able to move the mouse pointer and control all Windows
functions

Attempts to remedy:
1.  updating to the newest Catalyst drivers (10.8)
2.  updating to the newest OpenGL Drivers (Specification 3.3 for my card)
3.  disabling the intro movies by renaming biologo.bik, lelogo.bik, and legal.bik
4.  running it at 800x600
5.  running it with VSync enabled
6.  running it with VSync disabled
7.  uninstalling and reinstalling the game

**None of these solved the problem.**

However, I did learn some things about the game's problems.

After reinstalling the game, it ran perfectly once again the first run.  But, it failed in the same way as above
during the 2nd run.

Also, like the original poster and I mentioned above, when I closed the game, it reset the swkotor.ini file.  This
happens every time.  The new file contains only
"
[Game Options]
TooltipDelay Sec=

[Graphics Options]
EnableHardwareMouse=1
".

Side note.  The resolution cuts down to around 400x300 if I try to start with 1600x1200 when it fails.  But, if
I try with 800x600, the resolution doesn't get reduced even though it also fails to get to the Lucas Arts logo.

Here are my system specifications:

Program:                  Kotor purchased and downloaded from Direct2Drive as version 1.03
OS:                           Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 3 (32-bit)
CPU:                         Intel Pentium 4 3.20GHz
RAM:                        2.00GB
Video Card:              ATI HD 3650 (AGP) with 1GB RAM
Video Drivers:          Catalyst 10.8 (displays as 10.4 in CCC, because ATI is terrible)
2D Driver Version:    6.14.10.7070
Direct3D Version:     6.14.10.0743
OpenGL Version:      6.14.10.9756

Steam just had a major sale on this game today. I wonder if more users will have this same problem now.

Ah ha! I was right. My computer didn't like the swkotor.exe which came from Direct2Drive.

I found a hack a user had created to fix a different problem (http://themmospot.bl...hts-of-old.html) and just tried it out on my system. The link to the file is down towards the bottom of the post just before the comments.

It worked beautifully when used with a fresh install.
