I don't really understand why they are taking on a new art style for DA2, I didnt really see any major problems with origins.

Computer game graphics is like economic growth in Capitalism:

WE CAN NOT STOP, WE MUST GROW; GROW AND GET BETTER, FOREVER!!!!!
THERE MAY BE NO STOPPING THE PROGRESS OR ALL GOES TO HELL!!!!!!

That´s it, really.
Improved graphics are important, even if the old ones are good, because otherwise people will complain how outdated a game is.

People who played Mass Effect wondered why Dragon Age didn't have the same kind of polish. I guess Bioware thought it was the art style, when in fact it was (in my opinion) the graphics engine they used. Bioware licensed a 3rd-party engine for the Mass Effect series but used a self-made engine for Dragon Age which just doesn't look as impressive. I actually liked the art style of Dragon Age Origins, except for perhaps some environments. Awakenings had great environments though.

ME2 got a make-over, nothing extreme, but it looked a lot more polished. I expect the same will occur here.

mass effect is also about 25 hours long compared to da, which is 75 hours or more. maybe just dumping the low res textures for all high res would have polished it up a bit.

"Whenever you see a screenshot of Dragon Age II, you're going to be able to say 'That's Dragon Age II,' " says Goldman. "You're not confusing it for Lord of the Rings."

Game Informer Issue 208 Page 54

Very sensible reason, IMO

Or we look at it and say
"This is generic GOTH /EMO art with Hipster Beards"

I thought it looked pretty good on max settings on a PC, but it really looked god awful on the console versions. The textures...terrible. Also I found some of the clothing and armor designs to be eye-bleedingly ugly. Human noble clothing, for example, and mage hats and light/med armor.

As someone who still plays Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights, graphics don't mean anything to me if the game is solid. Had no problems with graphics in DA:O, and if they're similar I won't mind. I would like some new, original clothing options, though.

Anarya, I like your avatar.

Thank you! It's my Cousland personal canon playthrough Warden. I love the way she looks, myself. My Hawke will probably end up mysteriously looking a lot like her. :bandit:

But yes, more clothing! Non-ugly clothing.

DA:O graphics were OK, but only OK. Fallout 3, which came out a full year before DA:O, had better graphics than DA:O. The Bioware engine took too long to develop, and was outdated by the time DAO was released

But to get back OT; What was wrong? Clipping issues aside, everytime I covo with Morrigan all I can do is stare at her pearl necklace (innuendo aside). It's FLAT, just as with most of the clothing in the game. The screens for DA II show actuall depth to clothing. That alone is promising.

I´ve seen Fallout 3 once, and I almost vomited because it was so ugly. The only beautiful thing in FO3 graphics are the nudemods which are, indeed, better than the ones for DAO.

Dragon Age had that dated feel to it because they had been working on it for so long. Assets that looked good in 2006 didn't look so hot in 2009. Etc.

Standing at the top of Tenpenny Tower looking out for miles was graphicly impressive, though Fallout's character models were near as ugly as Oblivions. I could spend hours in the character creator trying to make a decent looking character to no avail.

Spot on it's better in Fallout 3,playing it right now

honestly would prefer graphics like it was in DA:O more than what we have seen so far from DA2

Fallout 3 uses the Oblivion engine, it also is not a party based game.  The party AI in FO3 is broken.

DAO had to start from nothing

Well maybe the game will actually look some what like it's trailers now.

Me watching trailers: " Oh sweet looks pretty cool!"

Me turning on the game: "did I buy the wrong game? where the heck are the people in the trailers?"

Sadly, the screens released thus far have me confusing DA2 with He-Man, 300 and Conan the Barbarian...

On the PC, the graphics were not that bad in Origins- there was definite room for improvement technically, but I felt like most artistic shortcomings were due to the engine not being able to accurately translate the stuff you saw in the concept art to the game itself.

And from the very early screens released thus far, the engine and technology still don't look like they can match up with the art. Its early, so I'll give it a fair shake, but just radically changing the art design doesn't do anything if the technology is still subpar- all it does is blow up any sense of visual continuity you may have had.
