How about a baby dragonling that is really cute and loves you but shoots fireballs? Like Spyro:)
I don't think Dragonlings can be tamed.... but I bet it would be fun to try.
If you don't need all your fingers that is.

You don't. You flush it before it gets too big.

but my hopes are...we will...and it will act as a summoned pet (not in the respect that you "summon" it..but that it appears in a slot like a summoned creature w/o taking up a "team slot"...there's a mod that does this for DA:O..I'd like to see this made a feature)

It would be nice to have another faithful animal companion. Not necessarily a dog; maybe something a bit more exotic. Like a battle cat, as in the Masters of the Universe. That would be pretty kick-ass.
Ive got it! a Griffon!! They are thought extinct in the DAO lore...

That's a pretty good idea, actually. Maybe Hawke could find a pack of surviving Griffons and choose to repopulate the species or exterminate them for cash.

just to drop the shapeshift and reveal itself as - no, not Morrigan! - as
a mage familiar or rogue-ranger animal companion.
A little later, nobody knows how that could happen - all kinds of
AD & D Forgotten Realms creatures and races tear the veil down,
attempting to invade Thedas(/my nightmare)

Failing that, a little baby dragonling that you can adopt just like Hagrid did from Harry Potter. That way, you can see him grow up into a big, fierce beast at the end of 10 years. Make it happen, Bioware!

There are mods for that.

However use at your own risk, I have never used it but I think it doesnt just change the appearance of your dog but every other dog as well.

As someone mentioned before, the dog is a lot of fun at first, and useful up to about level 10, but then after that you don't get any more cutscenes or party dialogue, and the limited skill set makes the dog one of the least effective companions. I would much rather have another fully voiced interactive character.
Bring your dog to the landsmeet and you will hear one of the best lines in the game.
But on topic I diddnt think mabaris were very popular outside Fereldan hence Leliana and Sten complaining that Fereldan "smells like wet dog".

I LOVED the puppy. So much love. I really like having lively, well-done animal companions. Even little shout-outs like the Space Hamster in ME2 make me ridiculously happy. So if we get another critter NPC for DA2, I will be happy as a clam.

What if they combined the pet and the bad boy romance into one companion? You would have a bad boy mabari hound that also keeps you warm at night.

You can chose to alter your mabari's appearance only there
- no other dog will be affected, among other options.
And, should there be a pet in DA2 as well as a SDK, it will not take long
until all sorts of alterations will pop up for the pc platform
(sighs again @ Sony's and MS plans 4 pc content officially on consoöles 'in stasis').

And bows will get strings instead of requiring magic enchantments to work
No, seriously, who can tell if the devs don't have plans for griffons in the da series
- I wouldn't hold my breath though.

Tragically your opinion is extremely reasonable
So neither would I. We are Kick-ass as it is on foot. With a griffon i would not want to be in the High dragons talonic shoes.
