Actually I don't care too much in giving my character a name which no one will ever use to refer to my pc in the whole game.
I mean, if they have to give us a surname they could also give us a name, like in Alpha Protocol.
Being called by everyone you met by your surname is annoying but can work in a game like ME, where you are in a military group such as the Alliance. Not sure it works so well in a fantasy game where actually most of the characters are known by their names and where you also has a sister as a companion (I mean, she's Hawke too).

That's what I thought. It's going to be "Hawke come here!" "??" "Eh.. that Hawke *points*"... also it's kind of unfair that they call her by first name and not you :(

Anyway Moe, Ebon and Black were brilliant

Exactly.
I mean, it's not a big flaw of the game, but being called by your surname by everyone in the game, even by your very best friends or your lover, is something I hate.
I liked Mass Effect despite of that, and if Dragon Age 2 willl be a good game I'll it either regardless it, but I don't see the point in giving a surname to a character and then let us choose the name. Who cares, since no one will ever use it and continue to refer to me as Hawke?
If the devs have to give the main char a name, they could at least do as Obsidian in Alpha Protocol.

I'm thinking I'll name mine Black, that way if he/she falls in battle I can run around the house yelling "Black Hawke down!!!! Black Hawke down!!!" while my wife wonders wtf is wrong with me.

I actually laughed out loud at this.  THIS is the best reason I've heard yet for the last name of Hawke.

Lady Hawke. So if I get into trouble Rutger Hauer can come rescue me. I suppose that means Matthew Broderick will be in the background lip syncing "Danke Schoen" for comedy relief. :/

God, how I hate the name Hawke. I hope it's sir/ma'am, Ser/Lady, Mr./Miss, or "Hey, you" throughout most of the game.

Mine will be name Paul, same as what I call any character that I can name (or if there's more than one, the main one).

Anyone know or have an idea of what first name they will give Mr./Ms. Hawke?

To be honest, no.  I love the "forum names" like Mike Hawke and Lady Hawke (for female Hawke), but I haven't thought of a serious first name yet.  It will likely wind up being some type of Celtic name.

I wish the game would flag whether or not you went with the default first name. The people that do could actually have npc's call them by name.
