What makes Mass Effect 2 so great?

I very rarely felt engaged in the game, felt too predictable, too restrictive to me.
I know bioware can do better.

Before I even got into the game, quite a few of my friends actually told me I'd like it. And really? I didn't believe them at all. But they really didn't give much info about it, and I don't really think the trailer my best friend shown me encompassed how awesome actually playing the game was. Then again, I saw the trailer like about a year before I actually got the game. I only got into Mass Effect his past December [2009]. I got it along with New Super Mario Bros. Wii and The Beatles: Rock Band.
So, later on that one December evening. I fire it up, the starting screen to me looked a little mediocre, but I overlooked it. I start a new game and then I see the ability to make a custom character, the kid in me beamed. I've loved character creation games as long as I can remember, so hearing how awesome this game was, I just knew it was gonna be at least just good. I start the game the first time [had to start over one more time and remake him :3] and then I hear the dialogue. The first few lines just blew me away, I don't know why... But it was opening up into something good. No. Better than good.
So I get to actually doing conversation and I see my Shepard up close... It was like looking and listening to a futuristic [older] version of myself.
I do the Eden Prime mission, initially though Jenkins wasn't meant to be killed! So, I think I started over here. Going up and knew it had to be so, I continued on, I even died a few times as I was quite new to that sort of gameplay. But it didn't bother me, I was loving it. And really? The rest is history; Shepard's one character I've grown quite attached to, especially my good ol' Soldier Jacque Shepard.
Flash forward to Mass Effect 2. The game impresses me even more, I refuse to beat the game, and yes, I know what happens at the end. Shepard's death stunned me, admittedly, it was the most shocking moment for a game in a long time for me. It was like a part of me just died. xD
But I think you get why I love Mass Effect... I really think it's that one game series I've wanted ever since I was young. It brings out that inner child in me it seems, because I'm always in a great mood whenever I play it, or if I wasn't in a good mood beforehand, it puts me in that good mood that it usually does.
It's just that amazing of a game, and deserves more than just a perfect ten. If there was a higher rating, I would give it to Mass Effect for bringing out absolutely everything I wanted.

Good ol' Jacque. :3c

2. Gameplay: Slick, fun. FUN. FUUUNNN! I hate shooters. ME2 showed that they can be worth while.
3. Story: Great sotry, great characters, great voice acting, great character animations. The game felt like a movie. Great for immersion.
4. Personalization: In how you play, the strategy you take. MOst game stories are on rails and have a universe with far less depth. I get attached to my RPG characters, so carrying them between games is huge for me. Love it.
5. Choices: Sure they are not game altering... but they make you think, and the fact that ME1 choices influenced ME2 (even if superficially) is very cool, and a very unique idea.

Vanguard in ME1 was nothing more than Adept with a shotgun.
Wrong. Adrenaline burst alone made the vanguard experience a completly different thing compared with the adept. Especially at the beginning of the game. Then someone have to take specialisations into account shepardt got after the luna mission.
No. Adapt with a shotgun. Specialisations didn't change the gameplay. They're just stat boosts. Adapt with a shotgun.

Have to agree with you there. People, I asked why you think ME2 is great, not why you think it sucks. I honestly can't even believe that people think it actually sucks because there is surely something in the game that you can enjoy. So instead focus on the positive. For the negative you can go to the 'Disappointment' thread. Thank youSithLordExarKun wrote...
Wow, this thread was started to ask the people who DO like ME2 to state why they think ME2 is a great game and we have the same clowns from the "Disappointment" thread, out of the wood works and try to turn this into another "I hate ME2" thread.

However, the CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT was where Bioware really shined. Giving us characters that people will have 1 opinion or the other on.
On our first runs, me and my friend both thought Miranda was a raging, annoying ****. On my 3rd run I decided to romance her and found that she was actually pretty damn cool. Same for Thane.

For me, as for many, the story of ME2 was not as good as it could have been.

That makes little sense. 10/10 = Perfect. 10/10 = Can not be better. There is no other interpretation. Have you ever played a game that could not be better in one regard or another?
How many 5 star movies have you seen for example? Does it mean they were all perfect? Of course not.

I think this proves just how silly the idea of mathematical evaluation is.
If the very idea contradicts itself in that a full score cannot possibly suggest a flawless work, then what is the point?

Exactly. And...? Of course they shouldn't have been rewarded 5 stars either.
There is a difference between movies and games though. Movies are "just" the story, whereas a game consists of more. I would give the story in ME 1 almost a 10/10, perhaps a 9.8. But there are other things that can't just be ignored and that decrease the overall score.

2. Story control. I love the trademark BioWare approach of having major plot points influenced by the player's decisions.
3. Atmosphere and setting. I'm a sucker for good science fiction, and Mass Effect has near perfect art design and world building. The musical score also fits perfectly.
4. Story. Not quite as strong as the former points, but still an integral part of the game that I enjoy.
5. Detailed graphics and fun gameplay.
For these reasons, I completely agree with the high marks just about every publication has given Mass Effect 2.

2. Multiple outcomes is wonderful. The game is very repayable and you can explore all kinds of hidden things and options you didn't the first time around.
3. As a female gamer, I have to admit that I love that I can have a female protagonist. Sometimes playing a game and being forced to be a male character can be awkward, especially if they force you to romance someone.
4. Gameplay is awesome. I love the hybrid of shooter and rpg. I think they picked all the best pieces of each genre.
5. Graphics are pretty of course.
6. Sound is amazing. Period.
7. But my number one reason is that it invokes an emotional response from me. I enjoy throwing myself completely into the game and having varying emotions throughout. Few games can trigger me to be as happy, angry, sad, etc. as Mass Effect.

1. Terrific characters. You can't get a team like this with such interaction between the player and the characters in any other game (except other BioWare games and perhaps games by Obsidian Entertainment).

So make me understand. Why is Mass Effect 2 according to you one of the greatest games (if not the greatest game) of all time? Forget the ratings other people gave it and the opinions other people had about it. Just tell me/us/whoever that reads this thread what you - *points at you* - think.
1. The focus on the characters.
2. The lack of significant bland or boring parts...besides the planet scanning which does not take very long.
3. The pacing, there is always excitement for the next mission to recruit that person or get that upgrade or see that location or plot. Only a few of the N7 missions are groaners.
4. The challenge of the combat system. This is usually a Bioware weakness but man this game has you use your ammo and skills to the best of your ability on the higher difficulty levels.
5. The quality of the writing and voice acting.

Gameplay: I like shooters, but I don't think I've ever played a cover based TPS before, so it was something new. I also liked the variety in the classes; even though the encounters were the same, a different class called for different tactics and different approaches. Add in squadmate combinations, and you have a massive number of ways you can approach each mission, and replayability is never a bad thing!
Above all though, it's the characters. Mordin's mission alone had a better story than around 80% of the games I've ever played. They all have interesting stories, and you can have a big impact on their development. The dialogue was amazing, it made me think, made me laugh, upset me, and pretty much every other emotion.
A lot of people are complaining about how the choices in ME1 didn't make much of a difference, but I actually welcome this. It'd be really old if every rock you moved in ME1 changed the outcome of a battle in ME2. I like to know that not everything I do is something that effects the entire galaxy, but instead would make one person change their job, or something minor.
I've played quite a few RPGs and quite a few shooters, and with ME2 I was given something that was neither, something new. That's why I loved it so much.

ME came out two years ago, ME2 is selling better then ME. The only reason why ME2 has not beat ME yet is because it took ME two years to reach it's sale number, ME2 did better then ME in it's first month and is still selling well, it was a succesful.
Where?
http://www.vgchartz....me.php?id=28815
Thats is far away from still selling well.
That the sequel sell better then the first game in the first month isnt suprising because a lot people preordered it because of the first.
ME has sold 2.24m in 2 years.
ME2 has sold 1.83m in around seven months.
It is doing better then ME by far.
Soemone talk about "most sucessfull games".Mass Efect 2 is far away from being even one of the most sucessfull rpgs.
