I don't find any of the characters to be particularly likeable, except for Khalid (the stutter is endearing).  The rest get annoying too fast.

I like all evil aligned characters. The rest, not so much... except maybe Mazzy & Imoen, because I like their voices.

Well that's something new. I always thought characters are BG's strong side.
Edwin, Jan Jansen, Minsc (and Boo), Xan, Xzar, Montaron, Cernd, Viconia...
Of course I play PL version so my experience may be different, voiceacting means a lot.

I liked Minsc for the first fifteen minutes, but after hearing him make the same crack about his hamster a few times... it wore on me.

Granted I've only done a Good/Neutral aligned party thus far, so I'm missing the evil NPC experience, but I'm not an Evil type player. Not even on additional playthroughs.

Ie. I need a Cleric. So if I'm not a Cleric, I need to take Branwen, or Quayle. Both annoy the **** out of me, but what can I do? Same goes for Anomen in BG2.

@Cipher86 - don't forget you can make a multi-player game (you don't need anyone to connect to you) and make your entire party that way, then copy the save game from the MPSAVE folder into your SAVE folder and now you got the party you want.

How is Branwen annoying?

Whats the purpose of this thread i wonder? You get annoyed by one of BG2s most well known and loved features. Good to know. Perhaps try the mod NPCs then. Or play multiplayer or solo. Problem solved.

I just feel that despite the amount of choice I'm given in party makeup, none of them really suit me.  I mean, if I make a three or four person party, I'm happy, but when I have to go six, I end up having to bring a couple NPCs I'd rather do without.

Well hey, I dislike everyone in Mass Effect except Tali. That includes the protagonist Shepard.

To each his own. I personally appreciate that the BG series goes out of its way to give us a variety of personalities, even if some of them seem intentionally unlikable.

Who's your favorite NPC in the BG series?

Probably Jan Jansen, though I understand how some people wouldn't find him as entertaining as I do. Really though I do like most of the characters. Charaters I dislike would be a much shorter list.

Thinking about it it has been a LONG time since I played the first BG so I'm probably not qualified to offer much of an opinion on those NPCs.

Playing BG1 there is little to like or dislike. However, they are given some personality by the BG1 NPC project. With that installed, there are then things to like or dislike about the personalities.

You can also use level 1 NPC to change the classes of the NPCs around.

You can, but what was being discussed on here as the "dislike" were the repetitive voice clips of the NPCs.  Those do not change even if you change the classes of the NPCs with a mod.

there's an option in the sound menu to slide the voice volume to zero. other than that not sure how to alleviate the OPs issue.

I'm playing BG2 for the first time. Minsc is really getting on my nerves. Not sure why everyone loves him so much. No interesting story so far, either.

Turn the voice slider to zero as the post above suggests, that will get rid of the repetitive voice clips.  People love him (not everyone) because people have different tastes and tolerances for repetitiveness.  Jaheira gets on my nerves sometimes; Nalia gets on many peoples' nerves too, but I don't mind her.  People either love or hate Jan.  So it just depends.

If you are referring to there being no interesting story about Minsc, you're right, he's the only NPC with no personal quest whatsoever.  Some of the others do not have much of one (Aerie and Haer'dalis come to mind; you can do their personal quests without them, although there is supposed to be a subplot involving Haer'dalis that I've never yet uncovered.

If you are referring to there being no interesting story in BGII at all, maybe you were expecting too much from the hype.  Where are you exactly and what kind of story are you used to so far as "interesting" is concerned?

I do not like the tone of your voice, Ovenall. The face Minsc has is the face the ladies love! Boo loves Minsc's face, too! Don't you, Boo?

You can always install the kidnapping of Boo if it's so important to you.

[about Boo] He mutters occasionally about fellow hamsters that will kill you all, but he is just moody, so don't worry. See how he glares? Shhh, we should leave him be.

Whoah. Easy everyone!

I love the BG2 story... Was just complaining a bit about Minsc's voice and sayings. I like hearing the voices... I just don't understand the love for Minsc in particular. I don't hate him by any means.

I too find Minsc annoying in BG2. He's got a couple of funny moments but most of the time he is just beating you senseless with the same tired jokes. And the shouting, my lack of god, the shouting.

One thing that many people never realize is that Minsc is actually the half-brother of Sarevok (same mother).

It's a bit obscure, but the information can be gathered when comparing Sarevok's diary with a couple of comments from Dynaheir.

When you think about it, it's really obvious though, isn't it?

Sorry, not obvious at all. What comments from Dynaheir? All she says is that Minsc is loyal and a good warrior despite his head injury. She gets what, 6 lines of dialogue in her entire life? How you translate that and a cryptic references to his mother in Sarevok's diary into a blood relationship, I have no idea .
