We do indeed have the precedent of Castor and Pollux in our universe. Although they were twins, only Castor got the divine "taint", while Pollux was a mere mortal.
Thus on the dreadful day when all of the children were going to be sacrificed, while Gorion and company rescued the PC, a Space Hamster observation mission did the same for Minsc.
Boo is not Minsc's pet, but rather his stepfather
Further, it is clear that Minsc's early years were spent with the SHs, who among other gifts gave him his great strength - afterall in the Mod that reveals the little known story of what happens when Boo is kidnapped, Minsc's strength drops to 9 (or 10?). It's that little piece of purple kryptonite that Boo carries (somewhere on his little body) that keeps Minsc at S=18+. Minsc's shouting is just normal Space Hamster behavior - their interest in Toril is mainly due to its value as the only source of both dwarven and Baalor Ale

I'm playing BG2 for the first time. Minsc is really getting on my nerves. Not sure why everyone loves him so much. No interesting story so far, either.
Ah...and I lived with the impression I'm the only one who dislikes Minsc. In BG1 he's tolerable, however, In BG2 Minsc is by far the most annoying NPC followed closely by Imoen. My God, what in the nine hells have they done with her?! Anyway, regarding Minsc, seeing how after the original game he managed somehow to acquire a fanclub, most probably someone really thought that milking this particular situation dry is perhaps a great idea, obviously not realizing how trying too hard ruins everything. I find Minsc's lines to be perfect examples of forced attempts at silly humor. It is incredibly annoying. The only reason to go near Minsc's cell is only if you intend to immediately butcher him after his release while singing: "ahhh, we are all heroes...". Also, I have little regard for Boo, cute things are lost on me. Imagine the stupid rodent kicking the bucket during a massive umberhulks stampede, now that's what I would call the stuff of legend!

This is one reason why I think BG2 is considered by many to be the best: not everyone likes it or all aspects of it. Basically, companies these days try to appeal to everyone, but in so doing they have to avoid adding stuff that may turn off some people. I love mustard and dislike brown sause, Bob loves brown sauce and hates mustard, putting mustard on food will make me love it more and Bob hate it more and vice versa if you put brown sauce on it. By not putting either mustard or brown sauce on it both me and Bob can like and eat it but not as much as if it had one of those sauces on. This is why I think many people like BG2 more still than DA:O and yet DA:O is probably more accessible to more people: DA:O is a sandwich without brown sauce or mustard on it, because they want it to sell to as many people as they can, while BG2 is a sandwich is heapings of mustard on it, if you like mustard then you'll be able to sink your teeth into it.
Minsc is topping that some people like, and others do not, and this goes for most of the characters, which is why I personally remember them more than I do the DA:O ones despite the DA:O companions having tons more dialogue than the BG2 characters. This is why I am more interested in games with divided opinions over universal acclaim games, and why I wish some companies would focus more on niche games, probably have to make them low budget since they wouldn't have such an appeal but that wouldn't bother me.

I haven't played Bioware's more recent games, but in KotOR you have HK-47 and in JE you have Henpecked Hou, both of whom beat you senseless with their trademark jokes, the same way Minsc does.FlintlockJazz wrote...

I myself like all the characters to an extent.
Ok maybe not Cernd, he doesnt seem to have a personality. Nalia is pretty bland too.

I don't get why people are telling that Cernd does not have a personality. You see, the great oak might crush a building when it falls, but the sapling that seeps its roots through the foundation will stop the building in the first, lest the cellars leak and the fungoids take the builders. As the trees are buffeted and snapped in the face of the gale, he shall be as the bamboo and flex.dabbister wrote...

By the time the average player discovers Cernd they most likely have a party established and have gotten embroiled in one or two class quests and grown accustomed to certain personalities. Then to compound on the matter his class quest leads to further inconveniences, he leaves the party and you have to travel to pick him up yet again...(sigh) Plus you have much earlier and easier access to another Druid leading to some class overlap.
I feel that it's no accident that the generally lesser used NPCs happen to be the ones "further" out in the world. If Cernd and Valygar switched places with Minsc and Jaheira they'd have more exposure, air time, and maybe would have ended up with more of a fanbase, we'll never know.

But I liked characters in BG2 (BG1 felt like it didn't have enough interaction to be able to tell). I feel bad about kicking some of them out of the party for game-y reasons. (Although I feel great about doing it to Anomen

He abandoned pregnant wife so that he can hug trees and hang out with his hippie buddies. He's my hero.
Srsly now. He is a perfect example of neutral druid and I LOVE his gibberish.
I'm also a Nalia fanboy (yeah, I'm quite unique). I agree that she seems to be a bit bland sometimes... BUT she's a noble(!) woman(!) in distress(!). She only needs to be kidnapped by a dragon to become a perfect woman for a fantasy hero.

I have only just finished SOA and I must have clocked about 140 hours ...what an amazing game .Best RPG I've ever played...and the greatest news is I still have TOB to look forward to...yay !!!
Anyway I enjoyed the characters..all of them, Viconia was my favorite ...she's smoking hot
But Minsc use to make me laugh with his sanctimonious platitudes and sayings
The funniest thing he did was when I needed to convince the Pirate Captain I was mad to get to Spellhold
" Meet my friend Minsc"
" Boo meet the pirate captain "
" Why is he holding his hamster towards me "
etc etc
Really funny ..lol

lol I am so relieved to know that I'm not the only one after all.
I've just decided to try another playthrough of the series, and Minsc and Boo are just as annoying as I remembered.
One of the hermits in BG1 I just ran across was pretty funny though, forgot about that one. His philosophical insights about not taking raisins from a rabbit and not spitting in a man's face unless his moustache is on fire... something like that.
Oh and the gravestones in Nashkel were great. The one about "when we said head's up we meant it!" or whatever lol.
