While I understand your concern with this, you do realize that such word usage is technically grammatically incorrect? The correct grammar is to assume the gender of the speaker. Not that it really matters, but it is something that irks me just a bit, there being people deliberately calling for poorer grammar in the marketing.

If you truly do understand my concern and where I'm coming from with my previous remark, then I really do not need to make a response.

Very cool podcast, thank you! Hope to hear more of these in the future.

@The_one, following your logic, wouldn't "she" be just as correct a default then? I'm with Devi on this one. I appreciate the effort of throwing in that one "he or she", and I understand why it can't be done throughout the podcast. Still, it's worth mentioning that we noticed and appreciated it.

Thanks for the podcast! The DA2 haters should really listen to this, calm down a little (and hopefully stop making those redundant rant topics).

I think we should just play the pronoun game , then we get all kinds of hilarious implications from the word juggling. Or perhaps some kind of custody arrangement alternating he and she in every other press release? Every other major holiday etc?

All kidding aside I'd be happy with the mention of being able to chose sex somewhere near the beginning of each podcast/article/etc. and then just sticking with he or Hawke from then on out. Pressing for anymore than that seems like a issue not worth engaging in.

I don't want to sound pessimistic, but also, if you are marketing something, of course you will say what the audience wants to hear.

Btw, what's witht the stuttering?

Just a thought.

don't be sold out by the hype.

Bill Gates once said, no computer will be over 1Mb of memory.

To be honest, I absolutely loathe podcasts. I think they're a horribly inefficient way to disseminate information, seeing as I could read through a transcript in 5 minutes instead of sitting there listening for 30 minutes. As such, I'd like to request that future podcasts come with an official transcript (not to demean Javier's transcript earlier in the thread, but I'd prefer something official.)

That said, there are some interesting things in this podcast. The early mention that DA was too difficult for some people concerns me (if anything it was far too easy.) That, however, is somewhat ameliorated by the later mention of improved enemy AI and increased differentiation in enemy tactics.

I'm also not sure I get the point about combat being too slow in DA. When I tell someone to attack, they move forward and attack. I'm not sure what needs to change about that (the was it was talked about made me think of Force Leap from the KOTOR games, and such a mechanic would feel horribly out of place in DA to me.) Similarly, I'm worried about the lack of powerful spells (or magic being more overpowered) if we can't limit spells by making them have a cast time (since we're supposed to be able to lift a hand and have fire rain down on our enemies.)

I guess what it gets down to, for me, is that talk is cheap, and until we see some actual gameplay footage, I don't really know that it's possible to assuage my fears about the direction DA's combat is taking.

Still, an interesting read/listen, and I hope to see more in the future (with official transcripts! :P )

No, NOT to big a deal. But making a deal of it is perfectly justified, because already now, it is so obviously that Hawke is male, that I'm already thoroughly bored when I'm told He can be female. Yeah right. As female as Femshep. Oh well. Maybe somebody else will make a game where you can actually make your own protagonist.

Mike Laidlaw, "There ARE people out there who I think, would love to play DAO, would love to dip into the world, would love to explore this rich lore, but they may not know about the game, they may not be able to play the game, it might be too hardcore, too tough. There were some difficulty elements in Origins, I'll definitely admit that. So I think in a lot of ways, what we want to do is make sure that we're presenting this story , that we're doing DA II, and the tale of Hawke, and his role, and his flight from Fereldan, what we're trying to do is make a new story and a new character, but a world that is intimately familiar, and intimately reactive for the players who are coming forward, so we don't want to alienate people, to make them feel like " Oh well I can't possibly play this because I didn't play the first one.."

So that's why they chose to create a new character. Bioware want to target a wider audience but attract them by introducing the story from a more precise, generic starting point, "what we want to do is make sure that we're presenting this story". I remember trying to tell friends about DA:O. They would ask well what's the story about? And what I noticed dampened their interest is where you reply, "it depends who you choose to be..."

They also didn't continue the story of the Warden because they didn't want new gamers (that they are trying to attract to the series) to feel lost in a sequel and thereby put them off...

What's wrong with Femshep. My paragade vanguard blonde female from the intergalactic colonies would kick your **** with her biotics. And btw, I'm definitely trying DA2 as a lady as well. Probably on my second playthrough. But I'm doin'it.

Thanks for the podcast, guys.

There are some interesting points in there to mull over for now. Still, being female, I can't help but imagine the hero Hawke as anything but male at this point. And NO I am not "making a big deal out of it", it's just the way I see it...men still rule the world of video games ;)

This would be nice, yes. Not too fond of the podcasts myself; in addition to the speed (or lack thereof) they also make it pretty difficult to search for specific bits of info and/or quoting.

The Game Informer preview mentions something about Hawke being equipped with moves which allowed him to get to enemies quickly. I suppose it can be something as simple as dash-like action instead of the default mode of movement. As far as spells go the induction is only one way to balance the spells, it can be substituted with post-casting effects, suitable cooldowns and/or increased casting cost.

Somebody did - it was called Origins Posted Image . I tried playing ME1 as fem/Shep but I just couldn't get into it. She didn't seem right. That and that dialogue wheel I kept choosing things I didn't want to say and have to reload. Maybe I can try it again as a male Shep.

In ME2 there's that wrong that she is excactly as maleshep. She walks like him, litterally, which looks awful. She talks like him. There's no difference, except for her... errr... romances, where she can choose between a wet blanket, a green emokid, and an insectoid alien. I was soooo in awe how well she was developed and how distinctly different she was from Maleshep. The only good thing about her was JH's voiceacting.

Letting close range fighters charge the enemies to close the distance and attack would work, IMO.

Why'd she need to be different? I'd have been disappointed if they'd tried to make FemShep feminine just because she's a woman -- it wouldn't have at all fit her role in the game (which, it seems, is much less flexible than Hawke's role in DA2). I loved her as is, and I almost always prefer playing female characters.

On topic, I thought everything in the podcast sounded great! Keep up the good work.

That was a Great Podcast. My sincere thanks to everyone who dedicated time during production of DA2 to get this done, get it out, and give us a bit more insight into what's going on behind the scenes with Story, Character, Combat, and so on. Though the Podcast itself didn't contain any really *new* information (well, at least for those who have been voraciously obsorbing every scrap of info to come out of the Game Informer Articles as well as foriegn sites) it was still a real thrill to hear first hand what they intend with DA2's direction, what led them to that point, and other little Pearls of Wisdom.

One thing which really had me excited was the confirmation (despite being touched upon in GI) that spells will no longer involve triggering the magic, than watching your character wiggle their hands or gyrate in place for a minute; now, we'll have more instant "Bringing the Fire" actions as well as expansions on the Combo system. Maker knows I loved having Morrigan use cone of cold, than coming along with my Mage and busting some Earth-Magic with Stone Fist. Both spells = Shattered.

Though it's still early, I know there are some really Big Bombshells on the Horizon as there always are for BioWare games. I can not wait to be knocked on my Butt by the next big reveal.

The bit that worried me was "The question that we asked ourselves and the question that we posed to the Gameplay team was, is there a way that we can make it so that when I want you, you up there fighting, that that character moves in, and almost immediately starts attacking. If I want to cast a spell, do I want to stand their waggling my hands for a few minutes, or do I want rains of fire to come down from the sky. Well I think those answers are pretty self evident, and the guys ran with that, as a philosophy."

The answer isn't self-evident. I want the powerful spells to take a while to cast, plus while you're doing it I want the mage to be high on aggro so the fighters have to protect her. I don't want mages to be insta-death thank-you.
