Need more information: Thinks like: What operating system is your laptop? If this is Vista or Windows7 did you know that you should install the game to a different directory than the default (e.g., not c:\\program files (x386)\\black isle\\) but like c:\\games\\baldurs gate\\). Did you try running the game with either UAC (user account control a feature of Vista/windows 7) off or running the game as administrator? Also did you notice the thread in this very forum posted by Kevin Lynch about BG2 and Vista/windows 7?

There are various reasons why BG2 could be having problems with your system and at the same time there are a lot of different types of crashes that can occur. It would help if you were more descriptive with the type of crash you were experiencing, such as CTD with accompanied error code, or crash to black screen while hanging the system etc etc. That way users on this subsection of the forum would be more equipped to help you find a solution to the problem.
It's very possible that you just ended up with a bad install and reinstalling will resolve your issue, hopefully that's the case. However if problems persist try to give a more detailed account on what exactly is going on. You could also try to check if you have any programs that interfere with your Baldur's Gate, in my case I experienced conflicts between the game and my firewall, things like that. Best of luck and hopefully you have it running soon.

Thankyou for the guidance, I have tried a reinstall this morning with no luck. the BG1 crash is just a black screen when i push play, the BG2 crash is just the egg timer followed by a system freeze, i am sorry i cannot be much ore descriptive but i am not very pc literate.
what might the fire wall be doing to stop play?

When was the last time you scanned your system for spyware? some spyware can interfere with the operation of programs. Do all your other programs work OK?

Just to add a little to what corey is suggesting. Try running a full trouble shoot on your system in addition to just a spy/malware check. Run a disk defragmentation check on your hard drive and run a disk error check (on your hard drive as well.)
If you have a third party (ie not widows) firewall or anti-malware program check if they are conflicting with your game installations by attempting to launch the game while said programs are turned off. After running these diagnostics you'll hopefully be able to isolate what is causing you issues. Best of luck.

on XP it won't matter, the default director is fine. Only Vista and 7 have the additional security pieces which can cause issues.

Have you tried running the games in compability mode? for win 95 or
win 98/win 2000? You could also install the games in compability mode?
Also, what version did your daugther buy you? What is in the 4-in-1 pack or was it another version? (there's a 3 CD/DVD version out, too, I think?)
When did you get your new laptop? This year? or last year? If so, you could have Vista or Windows 7....
