I never complained about this directly, but one major issue I have with non-VO is how unnatural it makes conversation. When people speak, they often reference what the other person said. With a great number of dialogue choices you cannot do this, because your VO cost just becomes astronomical for the NPCs.

Yeah, and that's why in my first post in this thread I said I also wished not all NPCs' lines were voiced. Posted Image
Sadly, that's not going to happen anymore... apparently, a more cinematic feel > depth.

Look how NWN did it.  Even the voiced lines (and not all lines were voiced) would sometimes refer directly to the PC.  They did that my having the voiced line phrased differently from the displayed text, so Aribeth would say "Welcome to you" but the text box would read "Welcome, Sylvius."

I thought that was a really elegant solution.  I don't know why they didn't try it again (well, I do know why, but I disagree with their reasons).

It's true that games with partial/none VA had some advantages in terms of amounts of dialogues possible/development cost, but the same is true when comparing 2D graphic (BG) vs 3D (DAO).

Requirements for AAA games simply changed since BG or NWN, I'm not saying that this is good or bad thing, but that's how it is.

But that's self-fulfilling.  They need to make AAA titles in order to sell enough units to fund the development of AAA titles.

Voiced if both voice actors are going to be really good. I couldn't make it through a manshep playthrough Mass Effect because I strongly dislike Mark Meer's voice acting. It was nice in Dragon Age: Origins being able to play both a female and male character and enjoy the experience. I'm super nitpicky about acting, though; the quality of the voiceacting is a big part of the game experience for me. Do it correctly or don't do it at all.

Amen - That happens with each and every entertaining industry out there, I believe

If that's true, then why did DAO sell like it did?

Really... whenever relations in the sack are getting stale, I just picture my girl as Samuel L. Jackson and it's like a jumpstart to my system.

Sexiest voice ever

The only change I don't fear for DA 2 is to roleplay a voiced protagonist. I have many other concerns, but not this. For me, a good example to compare with in RPGs is the Witcher, which was a good experience. You also play a predifined character who is fully voiced, like Gerald of Rivia. Still, you are able to change the story with your dialogue choices and overall it feels more natural to hear what you choose in the dialogue options available. Bioware is going to give us even more choices to shape Hawke, I believe. I think that this feature is a step forward for DA 2. It's going to make it more alive and realistic. I am sure though that Bioware is going to choose a proper voice actor / actress for Hawke. So far in all Bioware games, the story and voice acting are the only things which aren't average.

If I have to choose to get rid of only one of the voice or the wheel, I get rid of the voice and keep the wheel.

Get rid of voices, almost ALWAYS cheesy after a couple years pass.

I wasn't refering to that, though. I meant specifically that responses aren't generic. When we speak, we anchor to things that were said previously in a way that does not make your comment an equally good response to a different but similar statement.

NWN2 did this too, as an aside. The reason games don't today probably as to do with the majority of the player base thinking it sounds stupid.

But that does not mean that it would be possible for a company to produce a title that is not AAA and profit sufficiently to exist. Put another way, the fact that they do not produce AAA titles does not mean they can fund the development of more non AAA titles.

It was refreshing to go over to Bethsoft forums and read the threads on Fallout New Vegas, where people were talking about how they wanted to increase the text limit on the PC's dialogue choices and how only important NPCs needed voice acting.

But nor is the opposite necessarily true.

Also, why does the whole company need to do one or the other?  A niche game division might produce quite a good ROI.

That's only a problem if you're unwilling to view the dialogue as an abstraction.

I think at this point we understand each other's stance on dialogue enough to not need to point out our differences, no? You know I'm unwilling to view dialogue as an abstract. This is why VO is not an issue for me. There is absolutely no difference between VO and non-VO to me except that with VO, more can be displayed on screen.

Of course. I'm merely pointing out that the issue is more complicated than a self-fulfilling prophecy. AAA titles may be desirable simply because non-AAA titles are cannot sustain the company.

Opportunity cost. ROI matters only on approximate scales. A non-AAA title might have much better ROI (say 1.2 instead of 1.05), but if the raw profit in one case is 200k and in the other it is 1.4 million, the lower ROI is preferable.
