Thoughts on New Art Concept?

I think an upgrade was needed and I can understand DA wanting to own a unique style of art....but, actually, I think the new style looks sort of generic in a 'seen it a lot in anime' sort of way -- very sharp angles -- very thin features. On the other hand, I like the background and landscape art that I'm seeing. I guess I'm just not liking the stylized characters so much.
I know it's only concept art and by the time the game ships it might look a lot different. But, at this stage, I'm not sure that I'm feeling the concept.
What'cha think?

The close-up shot looks great -- much less doll-like than the faces in Origins, although the real test of that will be in motion.
The battle shots don't really look finished, so I'll reserve judgment. I do think that the spirit of the changes to the environments -- crisper and clearer with a stronger sense of surrounding space -- is a good one.

I couldn't agree more with this. Maybe the new crisp and delineated look is what many don't like.
As far as the in-game shots go, all that's missing in my opinion is a little more atmospheric perspective, and I want the lighting on the characters to better reflect the type of environment they are in.

I need to see more than just a handful of screenshots of one scene before I come to a final opinion, though.

In regards to the art style, I'm a bit up in the air. I have no problem with the idea of increased use of angular design, but it can be a bit over the top. I don't really like the armor on the ogre, for instance. Do I hate it? Not really. I just prefer the old style, but then again, I've yet to truly see the new style in its final form.

In all honesty, they really don't look much better.

I still don't know what to think of the style. I was kinda disturbed by how the darkspawn looked, I wished they looked the way they did in the old style, but I'm sure Bioware will suprise us with the final results.

I think that pic looks good, but the style is different than DA:O's so it isn't really a direct comparison for me. The real comparison is between the first shot and the others that were online and in the article.

It's funny, but when I see those pictures, it seems to me like you just proved his point. The DA2 pic looks significantly better than either of those DA:O pictures.Atranox wrote...

Specifically, the blood spatter on Hawke's face looks much better than that on Duncan, especially the smearing. His and Bethany's hair casts shadows on their faces...we definitely do not get that kind of detail in DAO. I think the skin tones look more natural, and overall I think they just look way better. Plus, bear in mind they're still 7 months away from releasing, so even though it already looks great, odds are it will be improved further.

I just wanted to elaborate on what I said earlier: though the styles are different I think that the new pics look better. They seem to have more detail and general refinement than the old ones (the close-up shot. I'm assuming that all the graphics will reach that point at least).
Correction. They have better artistic direction. The DA:O people look like plastic, malformed dolls by comparison.

I wouldn't say the originals look quite THAT bad, but I do agree that the new ones look worlds above the old ones in almost every way.
