I've just recently finished all of Bioware's modern games (Mass Effect 1+2, Dragon Age Origins + Awakenings) and they were all simply amazing. I'm now interested in playing a classic, KOTR, which should be especially fun since I love Star Wars as much as I love RPGs :D Unfortunately, I run a Windows 7 computer which I've heard has a lot of issues with older games like KOTR.

My first question is where to buy this game. I haven't been able to find it anywhere online, except for Amazon, where it is a ridiculous $40 (nearly double the price of DAO). If anyone could provide links to this game to buy or download online for a reasonable price, I'd appreciate it.

My second question is how I can play this game. On a whim, I downloaded KOTR off of a torrent to see if it would play properly. It was a disaster - I spent nearly an entire afternoon and evening searching up fixes, downloading a crapload of patches and files, only to have the game crash/freeze over and over again before it even entered the title screen. Windows XP compatibility mode doesn't work at all, nor do all the other "fixes" on the web work.

So there you are - I'm open to your suggestions and can't wait to play this RPG masterpiece :)

I would recommend Steam they have the game for $9.99 US. From what I have heard that version is a bit more stable.

If you are looking for a retail release try looking for "The Best of Star Wars" (I think that is the name please correct if I am wrong) it's a pack of SW games including KOTOR which you may be able to get a better price then you are posting.

As for fixes and compatibility I can only suggest checking the original forums and going to KOTOR modding sites, they normally still have active users and can come up with a variety of fixes as well as some nice mods to add to the game. The Disable Vertex Buffer in the ini file improved the game greatly for me (you can find a post in the tech support forum here)

It's bizarre how widely ranged the experiences can be: I was just playing it on Windows 7 (32 bit) and it's been pretty stable. The only problems were instability if I alt+tabbed back to Windows or due to movies because I play with the widescreen patch which creates the same result. It doesn't seem to be relevant to Windows so much as the specific hardware you're running.

Although half way into the game I hit a crashing bug at Manaan that I cannot get past, so even a generally stable experience can still hit a sudden snag later.

LucasArts Game Collection on eBay:

He's not kidding that ATI and their recent Radeons / driver software are apparently too incompatible with the old game to expect them to work properly with it.  Anecdotal advice also indicates that the very newest Geforces and drivers for those are no longer usable in this old classic game, either.  It is, after all, very close to being seven years old now.

I have a preference for hard copy, myself, and my Internet provider doesn't do much to allay that preference.  The combo of services I think that I can afford is the "Standard Home Pack" of Cable TV, Internet, and landline telephone.  However, the narrowness of the level of "broadband" that I get for that decent cost means I don't want to download anything large, such as an entire game.

I have the classic xbox version. That's pretty stable some glitches for playing on a 360 but nothing you can't handle. Only thing is you won't be able to download the DLC Yavin 4 station content due to xbox closing the v1 xbox live servers.

I bought my copy off eBay a few years ago(due to local retailers having seized to stock it), and had no problem running it on the laptop I had at my disposal at the time. However, after purchasing a new, more up to date computer a little while ago, I could no longer play the game(save for booting the old laptop).

I searched the internet far and wide for a solution or a possible explanation but after wasting a whole day without finding anything constructive, or even concise for that matter, I drew the conclusion that hardware was the problem. Not ATI, specifically, the game seems to become grouchy when you run it on (fairly) new hardware.

Now, the fun part is this: As far as I recall, I have had no such problems running KotOR2, and seeing that it's essentially the same game, that makes it even weirder.

The only tip I can give regarding this would be to dig up an older computer(i.e. 2008 or earlier), or try the console version. I've been contemplating trying the Steam version, as a last resort, but as it is, I think I'll keep my laptop.

I've found this thread on LucasForums, it helped me to get Kotor 1 started on Windows 7: http://www.lucasforu...ad.php?t=194296
The copy protection doesn't seem to work correctly under Vista and 7, but there is an official patch for this (download can be found in the thread above). It also contains links to all the patches for Kotor 1 and 2.
After that, Kotor 1 worked fine, even though I have an ATI 5870 video card. Kotor 2 starts without problems, but I encounter some very annoying bugs.

As for the prices: That is really funny. On German Amazon, the German versions cost around 40 Euro, but UK imports only 10. And if you want to play the classic Bioware Games, don't forget to give Baldur's Gate a try!

KothOR2 was developed by a different company, not Bioware. ummmm,, very interesting:?

Can you post your specs and video card driver numbers? Also, did you use compatibility (WinXP) to install the game or did you just install it regularly?

I'm going to be upgrading my computer soon to windows 7 and getting a new video card and it would be nice if I could play this game on my new computer.

Currently on WinXP
with a 8800GTS video card.
Had to roll back drivers to play the game.

But soon I'll probably have a 460 GTX video card and Win7 64 bit too.
