I suspect this is not specifcally to do with Leliana, and more likely due to my poor custom tactics tree... However, just in case this is a bug/quirk and there is a work-around, I thought I'd ask...

Despite my best efforts to set up Leliana as an archer who avoids melee combat where possible, she regularly ends up next to a monster stuck in a loop constantly switching from sword to bow and back again... I initially thought I had set up some sort of contradictory tactics rule:

1) Enemy:any -> Switch to Ranged
2) Attacked by melee -> Switch to melee

These two rules could make Leliana switch to melee when attacked by melee and then immediately switch back to ranged as an enemy was around, and then repeat...

However, I changed the first one to

1) Enemy between short and medium range -> Switch to Ranged,

My thinking is that an enemy at melee range should not trigger the range condition of that rule and so avoid a loop. Unfortunately I still had the same problem...

Has anyone else seen one of their party stuck in a weapon switching loop?

Thanks for any thoughts or advice.

i had some advanced tactics for leliana to keep her bow skilled. but what ever i tried ( and i see some of the same tactics with u as i used) she always went melee on me.

fix: unequip her melee weapons.. had all her tactic slots filled with ranged abilities or conditions... and finally she never went melee.. and was still able to use dirty fighting and make distance again when an enemy approached :P

Set her behaviour to Ranged (top right corner of the tactics screen) and then just give her a tactic to switch to melee when attacked in close combat.

She does that for me too.. I was thinking about changing the default stance, you know the drop-down menu on the right side of the tactics screen, but haven't tested it yet.. I think it might be a good idea to play around with the tactics screen some more, so you can get a better control of your party without micromanage each character..

EDIT: JandauX beat me to it.. Can you confirm that it does the trick without taking up tactic slots??

Thanks Boeresmurf, I'll give that a go... Just hope she doesn't decide to try hand-to-hand combat!

The default stance drop-down menu is a new one for me - must have missed it. Will try that too.

I rarely use Leliana, but I can confirm that she sticks to a Ranged weapon unless attacked in melee. I'm pretty sure she'll switch to melee weapons if attacked, though if she doesn't it can be solved with a single tactic slot. I can't, however, confirm if she switches back to ranged on her own after nobody is attacking her in melee anymore.

I tried this in the game yesterday and it worked like a charm.. I didn't notice she switched to melee and that made me a happy camper.. :)

Very possible. In the mage origin, a part-time companion is an unarmed rogue character and they can still do rogue abilities while unarmed.

I used duct-tape to stick a sword over the disc-tray.  It is a bit heavy though, I recommend using something lighter for your x-box's alternate weapon.

He's a bad infuence, sorry.   I don't use the xbox vrsion so i dont have a real answer.  On the PC version near the top left of the character screen there is a little sword with a I and one with a II, you select the II for your second set of weapons.

Go to that characters inventory screen where you normally equip all their items. Then Press the start button, it will switch to the alternate weapon slot and you can now equip a secondary weapon. To swtich the character back to their original weapon press start on the inventory screen again. It should say "press start button to switch weapons" underneath the large picture on them wearing what they currently have equipped, on the inventory screen. Hope that helps!

I've caught her punching at stuff while unequipped with any melee weapons. Boy was that an annoying discovery!

also set her at RANGED for the top bar, that way she will stay at range maximizing her bow use, unless she is in a melee in one of the not very common battles that you dont' have that option.

Hello, I know this is an old post but I keep coming across a reocurring problem with Leliana.  I have her behavior set to range.  One of the tactics I have setup is for her to switch to melee when she is being attacked by melee.  What usually happens as the result of this is she does switch to melee, but then just stands and keeps switching back and forth from range to melee weapons in a continuous cycle while the eneney just clobbers away on her.  I dont want to have to pause the game every single time something attacks her in melee.  Gets old very quickly.  Is there anyway to set it up so when she is attacked by melee, she will switch to melee weapons herself, stick with those melee weapons and attack the enemy attacking her, and not switch back to range until the enemy attacking her with melee is dead.  Love this game but the tactics can be very frustrating at times.
