Haven't you ever been to an important meeting full of nobles? People come in there covered in blood all the time. In fact, people will think you're weird if you're not covered in blood.
I'd rather the game ditch the persistent gore thing altogether, I always thought it was kinda ridiculous and always had it turned off.

Not just mindless blood splatter!
I can honestly say, my least favorite thing in DA:O was the blood splatter
Evidently they cant!
Because they didnt in the first game!
Playing The Witcher right now and let me tell you how nice it is to be in a truely dark mature setting (mature not only in game design but how developers approach its customer base).
I loved DA:O but now im starting to see how truely dumbed down and childiazed the game was for Biowares customer base. They could have done so much more in DA:O.
So sorry, till they actually do both, I can only go one with what they have produced already!
And that example says they use blood inplace of real mature ideals!
PS: Im loving the Witcher but you want to see voiced hero at work, play the Witcher. Fantastic setting/writting/storytelling. Almost no immersion cause main character is voiced!
Thats what DA2 is going to deliver as well!

I thought it would be the courteous thing to do was to mention it before you commit another fashion faux-pas like that. Really, people look down on that sort of thing.

The Witcher is probably my favorite game I have ever played. It was dark and enchanting, and it was truly written for adults (which is refreshing).
However, comparing The Witcher and DA:O is hardly fair...unless you're speaking purely of mechanics. I think the sensibilities of the cultures that produced them and the expectations of video games have a great impact on the story and background. I'm trying carefully to word my opinion without starting a debate so I'll leave it at that. Granted, The Witcher has shown that more mature games CAN be popular and successful here so hopefully that bodes well for the future and adult gamers.

What I never liked about blood was that my mage was always spotless and clean, and surrounded by a party of bloodthirsty lunatics who apparently had showered in blood. It was also weird that you could stop and have kissy-time while literally covered in blood. Darkspawn blood, most of the time.
Plus Leliana never looked hotter than when you first meet her and she's all friendly but covered in blood from the men she just helped you kill.

It kind of reminds me of the scene in Hyperion by Dan Simmons, if anyone's read it, with Kassad and the Battle of Agincourt sim, and the...stuff that happens there. To paraphrase Alistair, one good thing about the slaughtering hordes of Darkspawn is how it brings people together.

IDK, what game should we compare DA:O to? Mario Cart?
Both games claimed to be darker in tone and both games claimed to be for a mature audience.
But having played both games (well only in part so far for witcher) the two games couldnt be more different in how they approach that darker/mature setting!
Bioware did it with blood blood blood in DA:O (and in ME2 they created a shallow transparent character that swore for the sake of swearing)
Witcher Dev team has swearing but it fits the situation and no character running around swearing every two secs just because she can (I know people in real life that swear non stop and they sound as stupid and childish and uneducated as Jack did in ME2)
Witcher Dev team has blood but its not splattering all over everyone for false impact sake
Witcher dev team has nudity when it required and fitting (hell Bioware wont even touch that topic and instead we get watered down bra and panties or fade to black scenes that scream "G" rated)
Listen, I loved DA:O (might sound like I didnt, I did) but its not a mature game, its not even really a PG-17 game. Take away the senceless blood effects and you got a pretty calm and tame PG-13 game.
Which is ok if thats how its marketed and advertised as. But DA:O wasnt advertised as a calm and tame PG-13 game. They added stupid blood effects that you find from some slasher movie and called it Mature.
Thats just wrong IMO!

Indeed. Back in my time I had ALL the sex cards, even the ugly warrior from the Order of the flaming rose.
I especially liked the Dryad, and one of the two with Shianni (or whatever the girl whom you can marry is (not Triss the other)). Also, the first one of Triss with the cat was nice.
Anyways, back on topic: Yes, the blood splatter looked ridiculous. They should keep splatter, but not as much, and after combat you should have the option to wash it off (in another way than having Barkspawn lick it off).

Its funny you mention that!
That card actually has no nudity (but looks awsome I agree) and is 10000000000 more impactful of the situation then anything Bioware has offered up in romances since the ME1 love scene.
Some times, less is more its true. But the less has to fit the situation and not look like poorly planed censorship

The persistent gore COULD use some touching up and fine-tuning, but I wouldn't put it as one of the major concerns they should be looking at for DA2.

The approach is precisely why I don't think they can be compared. The games come from two very different places, two very different kinds of developers, and two very different sources for the stories. While I can't claim to know much about the cultures of both, I would hazard a guess that they, too, are different. Frankly, I find each game unique in its own way and I don't know what I would compare either to (though I'm sure there are more knowledgable people out there who could come up with some good ideas). Nor do I see the necessity.
DA:O wasn't rated PG-13 so they could hardly advertise it as such. While Bioware probably knew the rating DA:O would receive and could have tweaked or did tweak it as necessary to get the rating they desired, they did not rate the game themselves. I don't think there is a rating for games higher than Mature (though I could easily be wrong) so once that plateau is reached it's all a matter of degrees.
I do agree with you completely on The Witcher, absolutely and unequivocably. I just don't see how they compare.

I know some Bioware fanbois liked to claim that showing a boob would result in the AO rating, we both know thats absolutely incorrect and just mindless spin from posters that do nothing but spin on these forums.
Anyways, thats the next rating after Mature far as I know and places like Walmart and such will not carry AO games (basically porn versions of Video games from what im told, never seen one myself)

It is interesting that, inthe USA, ONLY porn will be adults only, while killing is fine for children.
Apparently, sex is far more terrible than murder, isn´t it?

Of course sex is worse than murder.
Sex leads to the munchins, children, love, fun, smoking and worst of all... more sex!
Murder leads to No munchins, No children, No love, No fun, No smoking and absolutely No More Sex.
There you are!

You´re wrong. Many women love murderers.
