And I don't reckon it is when Lothering was burned. If you meet her at the beginning of the game, whose to say that the action is chronological? (And if that is Hawke on the left, he doesn't look like a child.) My guess is that it's a later incarnation of Flemeth.

But I'm probably missing something obvious, so disprove me.

Why would Hawke be a child? There has been nothing stated of his age at the beginning of the game, just that he's fled with his family.

Considering the Devs have all said that the events start and take place at the same time your Warden is running around, it's pretty safe to say that if you just fled and overrun Lothering that this is the same Flemeth your warden met early in their game. I don't think anywhere has it been mentioned how long Flemeth will be around, which leaves plenty of time for her to go back to her hut and be slain by the warden

I understand the point you're trying to make and I do think it's fairly plausible despite the fact of the why and how Flemeth would change forms to meet Hawke.

What do you mean the why's and how's? She's a shapeshifter, so the how is covered. As to why, does the old bat really need a reason?

But I thought shapeshifters never transformed into other humanoid species? And yes, I would assume that she needs a reason to make such a spectacle of herself being an old witch that lives in seclusion in a forest.

Ya know the game could be narrated out of sequence, it is after all being done in retrospect.

I had the same thought. That would make a lot of sence, setting up a meeting with Flemeth in the start of the game and then having flashbacks telling the story of how Hawke ended up here.

That would make sence if Hawke was the one telling the story, not so much if others are telling it.

Ummm........... how is she another humanoid species? look a lot like an lady to me, which is what flemeth was. Granted better robes, but that comes with an updated game and updated modeling I'd think.

Because she has no reason to pretend to be a crazy old woman like she did with the Warden.

Yeah,
I really want to know if this "new" Flemeth is simply part of the new
visual design on everything or if there is some sort of in-game
explanation? Given that its concept art though, I believe Gaider posted
in a thread saying that the in game model for Flemeth doesn't look quite
as young and hot as the concept art.

Still, I'm curious if this
is just a visual retcon, or what?

She's a
thousand-year-old abomination, a shapeshifter who, according to legend
(and according to the grimoire you give Morrigan) seduces mortal men in
order to get herself more daughters. Her daughters are reputed to be
able to kill men with fear.  She's both a seductress and a hag.
She played up the hag aspect for the Warden, "Oh, never mind me, I'm
just a crazy old bat who saved your life! Go on your quest and take my
daughter with you! I'm sure nothing terrible could come from
that..."  But just because the Warden only saw her as the hag, doesn't
mean that's all she was...

Well, I didn't say she was another humanoid species, but she does look very different and I just think it would be a very poor decision to make her suddenly go from frumpy old hag to va va voom just because of updated modeling.

Well apparantly there is fine example of why she's a tad different right there, and if I'm reading that right it's coming from a Dev.

Crud. I thought he was a child at the Lothering crushing time but I have no idea where I picked that up. I guess I read into "fled with his family".

@hapghost  That's what I think, too.

I also think he will be a child in Lothering. With a 10 year span in game time it is possible, I mean why would you have a 10 year game time if you don't want to tell somehting about his childhood. Going from 13-23 is much more interesting story then say 20 to 30.

In the start of the game is is closer to game year 10. We then meet Flemeth and the whole "framed narative" starts with game year 1

Morrigan points out that she cannot assume the forms of a multitude of human beings, as she is already human herself.

You're assuming Flemeth is human. For all we know she's an intelligent dragon.

The 10 years is there to mold his/her legend to show his/her rise to greatness, makes a lot of sense for someone to be telling the story like that and it taking place over 10 years.

As for your second paragraph all I can say is' HUH?

My thinking is that Hawke is like Alexander the Great who is a very early age conquered the known world.

Correct me if I'm wrong, HapGhost, but I think what was meant by the 2nd paragraph is that if this is an opening shot you (as Hawke) might actually meet Flemeth near to the end of the 10 year time span, probably just before some climactic event. Then, after meting Flemeth, maybe you "tell her your story" or something and are cast back 9-10 years. That would be cool. Like The Longest Journey. (sort of)

If we meet Flemeth early in the game then she seems to be kinda Merlin figure to Hawkes king Arthur. She is definitely the one who sets the whole Xanatos Gambit thing in motion.

It is just to speculate that the Flemeth we meet in the start of DA2 could be 10 years older then the Flemeth of DA:O - a LOT could have happened. Heck she could even have cought up with Morrigan

Except that it's already been stated and confirmed that the story is told by two different people neither of which is Hawke

However it's already been stated that the Events of Orgins and the Events of DA:2 do overlap hence the importing of DA:O saved game
