Alright, so i've finished BG (Tutu) with a Ranger/Cleric, Kensai/Mage and a Conjurer. Now I want to have another go, but I'm stuck on which class i should pick. A Thief class would be preferred (I'm doing one of each class type). So give me your best thief multis/duals.
GO!

All the thief dual classes and multi classes are good.

I agree.
If you multiclass, or dual a thief at a high enough level, then you don't need to worry about not having a good enough thief in your party when you get to Amn. (Nalia could have done with another level as a thief IMO, though she's adequate for the job since she has knock, and you can always use buffs.)

Hmm so im thinking Swashbuckler/Mage Dual class, but when should i dual to mage? I'm thinking Level 7 or 9. Should I hold out till SOA?

When deciding what level to dual, I'd say yes, you are right.
The reason I say that, is that it depends on the type of character you want.
If you want a mage who can open locks, 6 or 7 seems good.
If you want stealth, laying traps and suchlike, then you obviously need to go higher.
There is no right or wrong answer IMO.
Waiting until you get to Amn is certainly an option, as you then have an easy section for levelling up your mage.

With a Swash->Mage you aren't really playing a thief, you're playing a mage who can open locks and traps (i.e Imoen and Nalia). I'd go for a fighter or mage multi.

But the swashie doesn't lose as much if dualed into mage at an early level. And gets superior fighting abilities as well as the ability to lock pick (which is not really that important since a mage has knock) and trap finding. It's more like a Fighter/thief somehow dualed into a mage.Ryuken87 wrote...

I'm not saying its a bad setup, but it misses out on the fun parts of playing a thief.

If you want to stay "thiefy" (e.g. play with the traditional backstab, traps, steal/detrap/open locks), I'd with a Single class Bounty Hunter kit. Their special traps definitely add a new dimension to planning encounters and give you a new wrinkle on combat strategies. The first time I played through most of the way through SOA, I really enjoyed it. Of course I rarely play BG1, only SOA and TOB, so i can't speak to how fun it would be at lower levels.

I can recommend fighter/thief or Swashbuckler. The fighter/thief is powerful throughout the trilogy, doing big backstabs is great fun
In TOB certain enemies are immune to backstab so powerwise he wont be as good.
The Swashbuckler starts out very similar to an unkitted thief but certainly gets more powerful in SoA, in TOB you can wear full-plate if you want and you'll have the best AC in your party (too bad it's not as useful as it is in SoA). The Swashbuckler also has good THAC0 and can easily have atleast 4 attacks per round with the right weapons, but of course no backstab though.
It's also fun to use scrolls as a thief, to pretend to be a mage for a bit (without mage levels)

Swashies can have 9 APR. Almost as many as a warrior.

Agreed 100% on that. The lack of backstabbing makes the swashie less thief more fighter.... that's why if I ever try to dual a quick thief into another class, I usually go with the swashie, since its bonuses are greater than disadvantages the first, say 7 levels.Ryuken87 wrote...

I had a load of fun playing a Fighter dualed to Thief at 9. This was BG2 only, but I think it'd be a totally solid class for a trilogy run. You might even want to go Berserker dualed to Thief to get the extra protections. One star in bows will be adequate so long as he/she has enough STR to the better bows.
Depending on your mods (e.g., true grandmastery), this character can be a wicked backstabber. And he levels up fast as a Thief too, so you eventually get all the goodies (spike, UAI, spike, time, spike, spike, spike). Save your stash of scrolls and he should do just fine in TOB.
Good luck with it.
